    Simon Roberts has photographed every British pleasure pier there is – and several that there aren’t. Overleaf, Francis Hodgson celebrates this devotion to imperilled treasures 14 15 here are 58 surviving pleasure piers in Britain and Simon Roberts has photographed them all. He has also photographed some of the vanished ones, as you can see from his picture of Shanklin Pier on the Isle of Wight (on page 21), destroyed in the great storm which did so much damage in southern England on October 16, 1987. Roberts is a human geographer by training, and his study of piers is a natural development of his previous major work, We English, which looked at the changing patterns of leisure in a country in which a rising population and decreasing mass employment mean that more of us have more time upon our hands than ever before. We tend to forget that holidays are a relatively new phenomenon, but it was only after the Bank Holiday Act of 1871 that paid leave gradually became the norm, and cheap, easily reachable leisure resorts a necessity. Resorts were commercial propositions, and the pier was often a major investment to draw crowds. Local communities now have a greater influence over the way their neighbourhoods are developed, placing community need at its heart, along with co-operation with developers and local authorities.     Plan for Fylde - Plan for the Future Fylde Council Fylde Local Plan Publication VersionEconomic Development June 2016Strategy and Action Plan Fylde Local Plan to 2032 – Publication version Preface Fylde consists of the classic seaside resort towns of Lytham and St Annes, the historic market town of Kirkham and the urban centres of Wesham, Warton and Freckleton; together with large areas of countryside and picturesque rural settlements. The Local Plan identifies the settlement hierarchy for Fylde at the end of the plan period in 2032. It is a destination in its own right for leisure, culture and tourism. Fylde is also an important part of the Lancashire economy – containing regionally significant business sectors including BAE Systems at Warton, (part of the internationally and nationally important Lancashire Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing Enterprise Zone), Blackpool Airport and its associated Enterprise Zone and the Westinghouse Springfields (Salwick) nuclear processing plant. It is vital that we manage, guide and encourage development within Fylde to meet the identified needs and aspirations of our local communities. The Local Plan identifies four Strategic Locations for Development which will be the focus for the level of housing development and economic growth required in Fylde up to the end of the plan period. The four Strategic Locations are: Lytham and St Annes; Fylde – Blackpool Periphery; Warton; and Kirkham and Wesham. To accommodate the level of development proposed, the Local Plan includes a masterplan policy for all of the Strategic Locations to ensure that new development on strategic sites is planned and delivered in an effective manner. The Publication version represents an important process in the preparation of the new Local Plan for Fylde.

He wants to transform the sand dune, the mouth of the River Wyre and the land around them into a stylish new town with a port and a park and guess what… The Mount will be the magnificent centrepiece! The park around The Mount will have to be really fashionable, with exotic plants from around the world and hidden gardens. If you hunt carefully today you can still see and smell eucalyptus trees from Australia and purple lavender too; they both smell AMAZING! Georgian ‘Regency’ gardens are magical places with lots of surprises, beautiful colours and the best views.

These regulations are necessary to meet the requirements of the Interoperability Directive 2008/57/EC which recast earlier versions and the deadline for implementation was 19 July 2010. The recast Directive contained new provisions for type authorisation of vehicles. It also has provisions for the reauthorisation process for vehicles authorised in another Member State which have been moved from the 2004 Safety Directive into the Interoperability Directive. ii.) The draft regulations will implement the Directive for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The reauthorisation of vehicles for the UK half of the Channel Tunnel are dealt with in bi-national safety regulations. All other requirements in the Directive in relation to the Tunnel will be implemented through these draft interoperability regulations. iii.) A copy of the minute is attached to this report. 1.4 During Committee deliberations at the March 2016 meeting, whilst resolving to refuse the application, the Committee expressed a view that they were keen to retain an element of tourism on the site to reflect local concern over the loss of a tourism use, along with revisiting the retail aspects of the proposal with a desire to retain a minimum two acres of tourism use on the site.
