The Summer of a Lifetime!

Swimming at Northside Pool Each summer, we offer the summer campers the opportunity to swim at Northside pool. The pool is located just off West Avenue on the Northside of Wheaton. The pool complex has two different pools, a big pool and a kiddie pool.

Our summer campers use the big pool. The big pool is L-Shaped and divided into two different sides. On one side, the pool ranges from 2‟6” to 3‟6” and on the other side the pool ranges from 4‟ to 12‟. The deep end of the big pool has a diving board and a tunnel slide. All children that wish to swim in the deep end of the big pool must pass a swim test with one of the lifeguards. This test requires that the children jump into the pool feet first and swim the length of the pool without touching the bottom. It is a Bright Horizons‟ Policy that children do not use the diving board or dive from the sides of the pool during our swim times; children may, however, use the pool slides. Floaties and lifejackets are allowed in the big pool, as long as the children are within arms distance from a teacher.

The children are well supervised by 9 lifeguards, as well as, a teacher ratio of 1:8 for school-age children (grades 1-6). Any child exhibiting inappropriate behavior will be removed from the water. A child will not be forced to go into the water, go under the water or do anything that makes him or her feel uncomfortable at any time. A child will be removed from the water, if the child appears weak, tired, cold, etc.

There is a refreshment stand at the pool. Children may bring money to purchase snacks at parent‟s discretion. The pool cost is included in the summer camp tuition fee. However, we would appreciate, if you would indicate on the permission slip, if your child currently has a pool pass.

Please complete the attached permission slips, so that your child may participate in these swim days.

Weekly Summer Events, Activities and Goals:

Summer Reading Program: The campers will participate in a summer reading program that will allow them to earn prizes for reading books. They will also participate in daily silent reading times. The campers may bring books from home to read, use our classroom reading materials, or use the books they select to read from the Wheaton Public Library. Each Monday will be our library trip day to select and return theme based books. Due to Library request, small groups of 7 or less will go to the library each week; each camper will have an opportunity to go to the library during Summer Camp Explorations Gone Global. This is a wonderful new addition to our summer camp program, enhancing your child‟s summer reading schedule, and continued academic learning.

Character Development Program: The summer Camp Counselors would like to continue our year round character development program into this summer‟s Camp Explorations Gone Global agenda. The Campers will help to determine the structure of the program. To help develop strength and a firm foundation of character development we will focus on:

HONESTY SELF DISCIPLINE RESPONSIBILITY COMPASSION FAIRNESS

Act of Kindness Day: This summer, we will continue encouraging the concept related to being kind to others. One day a week we will do something kind for another. It may be a campus project for Miss Kelly, another faculty member or someone in their classroom. It may also be a project we develop and work on for a community based need. Our goal is to help the campers begin to learn to focus on others‟ needs. Please review the summer camp calendar for the act of kindness day, and view the weekly schedule on the parent information board.

Cooking Projects: The campers will cook at least two times per week. Cooking projects help campers to learn many different skills, such as math, logic, language and science concepts, as well as, developing an awareness and appreciation for different cultures.

Craft Projects: Weekly craft projects will be offered, so that the campers will have the opportunity to develop creatively as well, as develop many new skills.

Swimming: The campers will go swimming two times per week at the Northside and Rice Lake Pools in Wheaton from 1:30pm – 3:30pm. Each camper will need a towel and bathing suit for swim days. Goggles are optional. Please make sure that all of your child‟s swim gear is labeled with their name. Also, please leave your child‟s swim gear at school until their last day of the week; one never knows, if we may add an additional swim day.

Technology Times: The campers will be allowed to play with the Bright Horizon‟s Play Station or other personal gaming devices only during designated gaming times. Technology times will be from 7:30am – 9:30am M-F and from 5:30pm – 6:30pm M-F. If your child wishes to bring their own personal gaming device and games (DS, etc.), please make sure that all parts are labeled with your child‟s name. Your child will be responsible for keeping track of his or her belongings; we will not be responsible for any lost or stolen items.

Field Trips: It is mandatory that every camper wear their camp T-shirt on every field trip. If a field trip is cancelled due to weather or vendor availability, there is no refund or tuition discount. On these occasions, we will provide alternate activities. Spending money for field trips is at the parents‟ discretion. If you wish for your child to bring spending money, please place it in a Ziploc bag labeled with your child‟s name.

Summer Snack Shack: The campers will have the opportunity to buy snacks daily at the Summer Snack Shack. Examples of snacks they may purchase are pretzels, chips, granola bars, juice boxes, sports drinks and occasional candy bars. All snacks may be purchased for $0.50 each. The campers will decide together what they would like to do with the proceeds from the snack shack. They may choose to buy something special for camp, go out to lunch, donate some of the profits to charity, etc. Spending money for the Summer Snack Shack is at the parent‟s discretion. Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Cooking Projects and Freezing Fridays are all included in Tuition.
