The film was a tragic romance/revenge movie genres. The film was directed by Daniel Petrie, whose credits include such films as Fort Apache and Bronx (1981). Starring future Airwolf star Ian-Michael Vincent as Buster, and Joan Goodfellow as Billy. In the supporting role, Buster and Billy also played Pamela Sue Martin of Dynasty as Buster Margie's girlfriend and Robert Englund in his debut film, which later became famous in the series Nightmare on Elm Street as Freddie Kreuger as Buster's friend,. This film is also notable as one of the earliest American mainstream films to have male frontal nudity. Most of the film was shot in Metter, Georgia, Registration, GA and surrounding areas. Citizens were glad the film was shot and did not know about the risky plot of the film or nudity. Plot In a small Georgia town in 1948, Buster Lane (Ian-Michael Vincent) is a handsome, popular high school student who is engaged to marry his beautiful, popular high school sweetheart Margie Hooks (Pamela Sue Martin). He is a great person on campus and the leader of his group of friends. Buster's friends often visit a girl from a dysfunctional background named Billy-Joe Truluck (Joan Goodfellow), who dourly gives them the sexual favors they want. Meanwhile, Buster is disappointed in Margie's refusal to have sex with him and begins to secretly see Billy. At first he sees Billy only for sex, but eventually finds himself falling in love with her. He becomes, in fact, so accepted with Billy that he breaks his engagement to Margie and begins to appear in public with Billy, who finds a new lease on life with Buster. They are happy for the first time in their lives. Happiness for them, however, is short-lived. Buster's friends are very jealous that they can't have Billy for their own use anymore and angle her one day when they're drunk and find her walking around. When she refuses to obey them, they rape and kill her in the heat of the moment. Buster eventually finds her dead, and it's hysterical. Then he goes to the pool hall, where his friends, with guilt on the faces of the main perpetrators of the crime. Furious Buster kills two of them, injuring two others. For this he was put in prison, but the day after her funeral was released on bail, which no one goes to, except his parents. He rips the flower truck off the garden beds in town, and takes those flowers to Billy's grave. Starring Ian-Michael Vincent as Buster Lane Pamela Sue Martin as Margie Hooks Clifton James as Jake Robert Englund as Joan Goodfellow as Billy Jesse Lee Fulton as Mrs. Lane J.B. Joiner as Mr. Lane Dell C. Payne as Warren Mark Pendergraft as The Mole David Paul Dean as David Paul as Arland Doris Pierce as Mrs. Hooks Carl Reddick as Mr. Hooks Dale Pierce as Sally Lewell Akins as photographer Mentoria Sills as Hat Lady Bruce Atkins, as Sheriff John Chappell as Deputy Bob Hannah as Bus Driver (as Robert E. Hanna) Aaron Swain as Chief Kinsey O. Waters as Minister Joyce Wood As Sagedusters himself as the most critical reception awarded the film three (out of four) stars , the film is not a masterpiece, but it affects the story well told, he watches his teenage characters with subtle insight, and he almost earns his tragic end. Lawrence Van Gelder of The New York Times stated that the film is both an alluring and fiercely disappointing film that leaves one full of regrets for what might have been, its main drawback being that the characters were types observed acutely, but inexplicable, distant, not real, remembered but not disclosed. Gene Siskell of the gave the film two stars out of four and wrote that it grossly imitates , adding, Worse than having an implausible storyline, Buster and Billy makes no attempt to justify it. I can understand why Buster can leave her steady girlfriend - she has a clothing-conscious drip - but a match with the emotionally troubled Billy is never justified, except as a means to wring our hearts out. The contribution to the failure of the film, and leaving a bad taste in our mouths, is another disastrous conclusion of the film in which various acts of cruelty are performed and people die. After wallowing in forced kindness, Buster and Billy ends with coercive horror. Variety criticized the ending as a hysterical, synthetic and implausible melodrama that bypasses meaningful resolution. Even so, Turbeville and Petrie are beautifully etch of social behavior in post-World War II rural America. The largely unknown cast performs with seductive authenticity, and there are many occasional observations that go beyond light nostalgia. Charles Champlin of the Los Angeles Times called him Women previously identified as crowd-pleasers with 'little life' none of this feeling, which for all its craft certainly was that its creators were looking back at the place where they were. Gary Arnold of The Washington Post wrote that the film began as a sharp and genuine story, but once it gets dark, takes a pretty fast-paced headline, goes down the path of gratuitously brutal exploitation. Changing direction is extremely unattractive and unthinking, and this can destroy the film's initially strong chances of popularity. Leonard Maltin gave the film a score of 1/2 point, and said it was a blubbery account of the romance of a high school in 1948 rural Georgia... and that he can't overcome the cliches of the premise. Stephen Scheuer said it was an uneven but insightful film and that Vincent played his role with strength and charm, while Goodfellow was touching as a desolate urban tramp. The title song of Billie's Theme is sung during Hoyt Axton's opening and closing credits. In the same year, the same year after the film's release, Axton's Life Machine appeared on the sidelines.
