Brian Kelly is in his 15th year as head coach of the men’s and women’s water polo squads. The fourth coach in the history of the men’s program and founder of the women’s program, Kelly has guided his alma mater since 1995.

Under Kelly, the men’s squad had nationally ranked in five of the last seven seasons including finishing the 2007 season ranked eighth. On the women’s side, the Gaels have posted nine consecutive winning records, including a MAAC Championship in 2004 and program-high 22 wins in 2008.

A four-time coach of the year selection, Kelly was honored by the CWPA Northern Division in 1999, 2003, and 2004 and the MAAC Water Polo League in 2004. He has produced numerous CWPA all-stars, including All-Americans Billy Mulcrone in 2000 and THE KELLY FILE Chris Przekota in 2002 and 2003. Year at Iona: 15th Season Birth Date: April 6, 1975 Kelly was a standout player at Iona, playing for Iona Hall of Fame Coach Rob Calgi. In Age: 35 his four seasons as a starter, he helped the Gaels to a 74 - 46 (.616) record that included Hometown: Chicago, Ill. three Eastern Championship Tourney appearances along with three top twenty rankings. High School: Br. Rice HS, He was a three time All-Conference selection, a two time All-Eastern selection, and a Chicago, Ill. two-time Co- MVP for Iona. College: Iona College, 1994 In 1993, Kelly, along with now assistant coach Mike Judge, was part of one of the WATER POLO COACHING EXPERIENCE deadliest one two combinations in Eastern history – tallying 298 total points. Kelly ended his career as Iona’s sixth all-time leading scorer. 1995-present Head Coach A native of Chicago, Kelly began his water polo career at an early age playing in Iona College Men’s Water Polo the Chicago Park District Leagues for Ridge Park. He continued playing water polo 1996-present throughout grammar school and into high school where he attended Brother Rice Head Coach HS on the city’s south side. There he played under former Olympian and Illinois Hall of Iona College Women’s Water Polo Fame coach Jim “Moose” Mulcrone. He helped lead Br. Rice to two Illinois State Titles in ‘88 and ‘89. In 1990 he led all scorers in the state playoffs garnering 21 goals and was selected the MVP of the Illinois High School Water Polo. Prior to the 2007 season, Kelly was inducted into the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame.

In the summer of 1990, Kelly was selected to the National Junior Development HEAD COACHING RECORD Team at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. He was only one of two selections from outside the state of California to make the team and he beat Year School Men PCT out a field of over 120 athletes to be named the camp’s 2-Meter MVP. The camp 1995-96 Iona College 6-15 .286 included several current and former USA 1996-97 Iona College 5-10 .333 National Team members including Wolf 1997-98 Iona College 10-10 .500 Wigo, Steve Gill, and Jack Bowen. 1998-99 Iona College 8-15 .348 1999-00 Iona College 14-11 .560 Kelly is an active year-round player 2000-01 Iona College 17-11 .607 with the Hudson Valley USWP club 2001-02 Iona College 17-15 .531 which competes in the Eastern Water 2002-03 Iona College 18-10 .643 Polo League. Alum Michael Judge begins his fifth year as an assistant coach with the Gaels. A two- year captain of the Iona water polo team, Judge was the school’s all-time leading goal scorer for 10 years. His teammates included current head coach Brian Kelly and women’s assistant coach Kevin Judge.

Judge is currently a member of the national champion New York Athletic Club water polo team. He is also employed by Natexis Bleichroeder Inc. of New York City.

Assistant Coach Chris VIDALE

Chris Vidale is in his second season as a member of the Iona College water polo coaching staff.

A 2007 graduate of Iona, Vidale appeared in 67 games during his four-year Iona career, tallying 30 goals, eight assists, 56 steals and 38 kick outs drawn. The defensive specialist had a breakout senior campaign with 21 goals while leading the team with 37 steals. During Vidale’s tenure in New Rochelle, the Gaels reached the Eastern Championship in both 2003 and 2005.

Since departing Iona, Vidale has spent time making waves traveling the world as a member of the Trinidad & Tobago national squad. . Vidale’s parents were both born in Trinidad and Tobago before moving to Florida where he was born. The Florida native began the process of trying out for the national team in May 2008, spending nearly two weeks in Port-of-Spain while playing in front of committee members of the athletics board of the archipelagic state.
