Last chance to become a human rainbow Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC) will be holding its fourth Colour Rush at Green Park, Aston Clinton on Sunday 7th October. The Charity urges Colour Rushers to sign up quickly as this will be the last year for local people to get covered in colour for their Hospice. The money raised will support Florrie’s Children’s Team, providing respite care for children with life-limiting conditions in their own homes. Colour Rush has created fantastic memories for families who have done it, and children love it. “It’s the perfect thing to do with all the family. You’re allowed to bring your parents!” says Hannah, aged 10. “When you come out at the end, you have colours all over you.” It’s a 5k run, walk or jog with five colour stations, and there’s a 1k Mini-Rush as well. Out of school activities improve School visits by educational attainment Kew Little Pigs A study by researchers from NatCen Social Research at Newcastle University has found that children who take part in organised sports and after-school clubs can improve primary school academic performance and social skills. The study of 6,400 children in England found that those who took part in organised sports and physical activities at the ages of 5, 7 and 11 were almost one and a half times more likely to reach a higher than expected level in their Key Stage 2 (KS2) maths test at the age of 11. According to the Lead Investigator, Emily Tanner of NatCen, “Results showed that sports clubs were positively associated with attainment outcomes at age 11, even when accounting for prior attainment at age 7.” The research also found that disadvantaged children who attended after-school clubs developed better social, emotional and behavioural skills than those, also from similar social circumstances, who did not. By Claire Winter During the primary school years, there is a tendency to want to bury your head in the sand when it comes to the issues and challenges of mobile phone use and social media. If you have children under 10 years old, you may not feel you need to pay attention to this yet. However, by Years 5 and 6 many of your children’s peers will have started to actively use apps like Snapchat and Instagram and you need to start to understand how to help your child navigate the online world. The legal age for children to use social sites like Facebook, Instagram, Musical. ly and Snapchat is 13. But, according to a report by the Children’s Commissioner, around 75% of 10 to 12 year olds have a social media account. This autumn, state and independent schools will be opening their doors to prospective pupils and their parents to give them a flavour of life at their school. Claire Winter has the lowdown on how to get the best out of these Open Days and tours.

Olivia Malaure talks to Frances Delaney, a parent whose child has experienced both types of school.

If you are fortunate enough to be able to choose where your child will go to school, then it might help to look at the bigger picture and leap forward twelve years. Recent statistics show that students from state schools out-perform students from independent (private) schools at university. However, before you allocate your tuition fees to more leisurely pursuits, consider that these statistics also show that students from independent schools are more likely to gain a place at university in the first place. Right now, the idea of your young child reaching university age may seem unimaginable, but it pays to do your research early. And, when you do, it’s hard to ignore the fiery discussion about the moral, financial and practical issues that catapult from any search engine as you try to weigh up the ‘pros and cons’ of state form, rather than have to transition to a Was it an easy decision? versus independent education. large college later on. It is important to instil a love of mathematics from a young age to ensure children develop a positive attitude which continues to grow when concepts become more challenging. A strong background in the subject will equip children with important life skills such as logical reasoning, problem-solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. Maths can be an inspiring subject, giving rise to moments of wonder when a child solves a problem for the first time and we need to help children appreciate the magic of numbers. Making Maths Fun It is important to make maths as fun as possible from a young age. In KS1 maths, some of the topics your children will cover include: number recognition and place value; addition and subtraction; multiplication and division; fractions; measurements; geometry; time; money and statistics. There are many ways to incorporate maths into daily activities – games, puzzles and jigsaws are a perfect place to start. Even your regular food shop can be filled with fun maths games and facts. Here are some fun maths activities to do at home that cover the key areas in KS1 maths: Number recognition and place value: • Choose a ‘Number of the Week’ and Fractions: Time: see how many times you and your • Get your child to sort their toys • Ask your child to calculate what time child can spot this number around the into different groups, for example, they need to leave the house whenever house, out in the street or even in the 2 halves or 4 quarters, or even by you are going somewhere. By Nina Farr Life as a single parent can be tough at the beginning. Moving on from life with your child’s other parent means moving into life on your own terms. But that’s not easy when you still have to focus on your children day to day. I’ve been a lone parent to a toddler and a baby, and I’ve worked with over a hundred other women parenting alone too. I’ve learned a lot about how to find your equilibrium when you start over as a single mum and I’d like to share some of my experiences with you.

Lone parenting isn’t lonely One of the hardest things about being the only adult at home is feeling isolated from other adults. Reach out and say hello to At least, it doesn’t have to be. It may be scary and sad when you the parents you meet day-to-day. Chances are, at least some of say goodbye to the dream of a two parent home. But just because them will be a lone parent just like you. And even those who you don’t live with your co-parent doesn’t mean they won’t or aren’t can be a fantastic addition to your network. They are more can’t help. A lot of the positives of co-parenting require your able to pop round and see you after the kids go to bed, or offer willingness to work together and be supportive of each other’s to babysit now and then. needs and desires for your children. Don’t worry about being judged by other parents. Everyone Even if your co-parent is mostly absent, or needs to have their contact limited for some reason, you can build an amazing network of peers and friends who can support and help you out. Try joining www.gingerbread.org and look for your local single parent group. If there isn’t one nearby, check out your children’s centre and local playgroups, or enrol your children in some clubs or activities. This will broaden your social circle. 1 in 4 families in the UK are headed by a single parent That’s a quarter of the parents on the school run or at your local stay and play. You’re by no means on your own so don’t let feelings of anxiety or guilt about being a single parent knock your confidence.
