3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry

Surgeon Robert E. McMeens Robert E. McMeens enlisted as a 30 year old Surgeon in the 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 19, 1861, mustering into service April 27, 1861. He reenlisted with the regiment for three years’ service on June 12, 1861, but died of disease October 30, 1862. The following letter from Dr. George G. Shumard, gives some of the details of his service and demise.

Commissary Sergeant Josiah W. Slanker Josiah W. Slanker enlisted as a 26 year old Private in Company A, 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 18, 1861, mustering into service the same day. On August 27, 1861, he was promoted to Commissary Sergeant. His record is unclear after that.

Private Jacob E. Hime, Company B Jacob E. Hime enlisted as a 26 year old Private in Company B, 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Wounded at both Cedar Mountain (August 9, 1862) and Ringgold (November 27, 1863), he was mustered out July 6, 1864

Lieutenant Colonel Franklin Sawyer Franklin Sawyer was born July 13, 1825 in Auburn, Crawford Co., Ohio and enlisted as a 35 year old Captain in Company D, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 20, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He reenlisted for three years’ service on June 18, 1861, and was promoted to Major July 8, 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel to date November 25, 1861 and mustered out at that rank July 13, 1864. Sawyer was wounded July 1, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg and was awarded a brevet promotion to Brigadier General to date March 13, 1865. He died August 22, 1892 in Norwalk, Ohio.

Lieutenant Colonel Freeman E. Franklin, Company A (see also 34th Ohio Volunteer Infantry) Freeman E. Franklin enlisted as a 37 year old captain of Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service April 27, 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on May 4, 1861, and mustered out August 24, 1861. Commissioned Major in the 34th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 2, 1861, he was mustered into service September 2, 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel to date May 14, 1862 and to Colonel to date July 18, 1863. He was mustered out September 17, 1864.

Major Albert H. Winslow, Company A Albert H. Winslow enlisted as a 33 year old Captain of Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 4, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Promoted to Major to date November 25, 1861, he mustered out July 13, 1864

Sergeant Major Wilson S. Parker Wilson S. Parker enlisted as a 19 year old Private in Company D, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 29, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was promoted to Sergeant at an unknown date and to Sergeant Major to date December 20, 1862. He was mustered out July 13, 1864.

Captain Ezra Westcote Clark, Company A (see also 34th Ohio Volunteer Infantry) Ezra Westcote Clark enlisted as a 22 year First Sergeant of Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service April 26, 1861. Promoted to the rank of Captain to date May 6, 1861, he was mustered out August 18, 1861 at Columbus, Ohio. He was appointed Adjutant of the newly formed 34th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, “Piatt’s Zouaves,” on August 17, 1861, serving in that capacity for several years. He was promoted to the rank of Captain to date February 29, 1864 and commissioned into the U.S. Adjutant General Dept. He served in this capacity for the remainder of his service, obtaining a brevet promotion to the rank of Major to date May 11, 1865, before mustering out October 30, 1865.

Captain Benjamin F. Ogle, Company A Benjamin F. Ogle was commissioned a 32 year old First Lieutenant of Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He mustered out of the three months’ service and reenlisted for three years on June 4, 1861. Promoted to Captain to date November 25, 1861, he resigned his commission November 27, 1862.

First Lieutenant Charles W. Barnes, Companies A and D Charles W. Barnes enlisted as a 20 year old Second Lieutenant in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Reenlisting for three years’ service on June 4, 1861, he was promoted to First Lieutenant to date February 6, 1862 and transferred to Company D. He was killed in action September 17, 1862 at the Battle of Antietam.

First Lieutenant William D. Wetherell, Companies E and A William D. Wetherell enlisted as a 21 year old Sergeant in Company E, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 24, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He reenlisted for three years’ service on June 25, 1861, and was promoted to First Sergeant August 28, 1861. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant to date March 11, 1862, and to First Lieutenant to date October 17, 1862. He was transferred to Company A on February 23, 1863 and was mustered out July 13, 1864.

Second Lieutenant John N. Travis, Company A John N. Travis enlisted as a 22 year old Private in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He reenlisted for three years’ service on May 28, 1861 and was promoted to Corporal. Commissioned Second Lieutenant to date November 7, 1862, he was mustered out July 13, 1864. He later was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 2nd veteran Volunteers Infantry on February 20, 1865, being promoted to First Lieutenant to date September 26, 1865. He served with this regiment until mustered out March 16, 1866. He served in the Army again from January 22, 1867 to August 11, 1868. He received a brevet promotion to First Lieutenant to date March 2, 1867 for services at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Sergeant Peter J. Hosler, Company A Peter J. Hosler enlisted as a 28 year old Corporal in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on June 2, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Promoted to Sergeant January 17, 1863, he was mustered out July 13, 1864.

Sergeant Edward Jones, Company A Edward Jones enlisted as a 21 year old Private in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on May 28, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Wounded in the head July 3, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg, he died of his wounds February 28, 1864 at Camp Dennison, Ohio. The following letter from an unknown comrade pays tribute to Jones.

Sergeant Samuel S. Kissinger, Company A (see also 65th New York Volunteer Infantry) Samuel S. Kissinger enlisted as a 24 year old Sergeant in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was discharged to join Co. K, 65th New York Volunteer Infantry to date May 20, 1861. He enlisted as a Sergeant in Company K, 65th New York on August 3, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Kissinger served with the regiment through the entire war, rising successively in rank to First Sergeant (September 1, 1864), Second Lieutenant (September 1, 1864), First Lieutenant of Company E (September 10, 1864), and finally to the rank of Captain of Company K (May 11, 1865). Having reenlisted as a veteran on January 5, 1864, he was mustered out July 17, 1865 at Hall’s Hill, Virginia.

Corporal Samuel F. Poorman, Company A Samuel F. Poorman enlisted as a 21 year old Corporal in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Many members of the 8th Ohio desiring to enlist as a three years’ regiment, Poorman was mustered out May 28, 1861 to enlist in the three years’ regiment. On June 1, 1862, he was appointed hospital steward and transferred to the U.S. Regular Army.

Private Andrew H. Byers, Company A Andrew H. Byers enlisted as a 30 year old Private in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on May 28, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was discharged for disability January 17, 1862. He later served as Captain of Company D, 86th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, being commissioned May 26, 1862 and mustered out September 25, 1862 at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio.

Private John W. Canary (Carney), Company A John W. Canary enlisted as a 19 year old Private in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was mustered out May 28, 1861 to enlist in the regiment for three years’ service. He was mustered out July 13, 1864.

Private Fernando N. Colwell, Company A Fernando N. Colwell enlisted as a 21 year old Private in Company A, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861, mustering into service the same day. Reenlisting of three years’ service on May 28, 1861, he was mustered out July 13, 1864.

Surgeon George Rocap Weeks Doctor George R. Weeks enlisted as a 35 year old assistant surgeon in the 25th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on July 2, 1861, mustering into service the same day. On July 23, 1861, he was discharged for a promotion to Surgeon of the 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On February 19, 1863, he was commissioned Surgeon in the U.S. Volunteers Medical Staff, a position which he held until he was mustered out October 7, 1865. He was awarded a brevet promotion to Lieutenant Colonel to date October 6, 1865. He died January 1, 1903.

45th Ohio Volunteer Infantry

Colonel Benjamin Piatt Runkle Benjamin Piatt Runkle was born September 3, 1836 in West Liberty, Ohio and enlisted as a Captain in Company D, 13th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 17, 1861, mustering into service May 4, 1861. He was mustered out of the three months’ organization on June 1, 1861, reenlisting for three years on June 26, 1861 as Captain of Company C, 13th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to Major to date October 25, 1861, then Lieutenant Colonel to date May 13, 1862, he was discharged for promotion August 19, 1862, accepting a commission as Colonel of the 45th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged July 21, 1864, accepting a position as Lieutenant Colonel of the Veterans Reserve Corps to date August 22, 1864. Following the close of hostilities, he was given brevet promotions to Colonel, Brigadier General, and Major General of Volunteers, all dating November 9, 1865. He was also brevetted to Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Regulars for his involvement at Shiloh, his brevet dating to March 2, 1867 along with a subsequent brevet promotion to Colonel. He was mustered out of service with the Veterans Reserve Corps on October 5, 1866 but served in the U.S. Army subsequently. He died June 28, 1916 in Hillsboro, Ohio.

Lieutenant Colonel Albert Milton Blackman Albert M. Blackman was born March 6, 1826 in Tiffin, Ohio. He enlisted as Captain of Company H, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 23, 1861, mustering into service April 24, 1861. He served with the regiment through the summer campaign in western Virginia before mustering out August 12, 1861. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted as Lieutenant Colonel of the 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 17, 1861, mustering into service three days later. He resigned his commission August 31, 1862. He was again commissioned Lieutenant Colonel in the 27th United States Colored Troops on March 24, 1864. Promoted to Colonel to date September 1, 1864, Blackman was later awarded a brevet promotion to Brigadier General to date October 27, 1864. He resigned his commission May 16, 1865. He died August 5, 1876 at Cresco, Iowa.

Captain John E. McCormick, Company B John E. McCormick enlisted as a 39 year old First Lieutenant of Company B, 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 24, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was on detached duty from November 1, 1861-April 20, 1862, and was promoted to Captain to date June 22, 1862. He was again of detached duty from October 25, 1863- March 18, 1864. He resigned his commissioned and was discharged for disability on September 15, 1864

First Sergeant David H. Daywalt, Company B David H. Daywalt enlisted as 24 year old Corporal in Company B, 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 12, 1861, mustering into service August 17, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant November 1, 1861, he was wounded and captured December 31, 1862 at the Battle of Stones River. He returned to his regiment November 22, 1863 and reenlisted for the duration of the war. He was promoted to First Sergeant March 10, 1864 before being reduced to the ranks December 30, 1864. He was again promoted to First Sergeant July 3, 1865 at was mustered out November 30, 1865 at Victoria, Texas.

Sergeant Henry F. Arndt, Company B Henry F. Arndt enlisted as a 20 year old Corporal in Company B, 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 12, 1861, mustering into service August 17, 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant June 18, 1862 and distinguished himself during the Battle of Stones River. He was wounded November 25, 1863 in the storming of Missionary Ridge and died of his wounds that day. The following letter from Colonel William H. Gibson recounts Arndt’s military career.

Captain Dwight R. Cook, Companies D, E, I, and K Dwight R. Cook enlisted as a 21 year old Private in Company D, 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 14, 1861, mustering into service August 20, 1861. He rose through the ranks, being promoted to Corporal May 1, 1862,, then Sergeant Major September 1, 1862, and receiving his commission as Second Lieutenant to date August 21, 1863, transferring to Company K. Captured in the battle of White Oak Swamp, his life was spared by Private William S. Wood, a Tiffin native serving in Co. I, 65th New York Volunteer Infantry, as related by the letter below. Unfortunately, Murchison was wounded June 21, 1864 at Cold Harbor, Virginia and died of his wounds June 25, 1864 at Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia.

Captain Marion T. Anderson, Company D *Medal of Honor Marion T. Anderson was born November 13, 1839 in Decatur Co., Indiana and enlisted while a 22 year old resident of Kokomo, Indiana as a First Sergeant in Company D, 51st Indiana Volunteer Infantry on December 14, 1861, mustering into service the same day. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant to date April 30, 1862 and to Captain to date December 11, 1862. He was captured May 3, 1863 during Streight’s Raid, the following article is a description of his experiences while imprisoned. Anderson rejoined his regiment in early 1864 and was awarded a Medal of Honor for his actions December 16, 1864 during the . During the engagement, he led his regiment over 5 lines of enemy works, being wounded in the engagement as well. He resigned his commission June 16, 1865. He died February 7, 1904 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

First Lieutenant Roman Hector Gray, Company E, 1st Battalion Roman Hector Gray enlisted as a Private in Company E, 1st Battalion, 15th U.S. Infantry on September 27, 1861 and was soon promoted to Sergeant. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant to date April 7, 1862, and to First Lieutenant to date January 3, 1863. Captured at the Battle of Chickamauga, he earned a brevet promotion to the rank of Captain for his actions in that battle. He served in the U.S. Army subsequently until his death September 14, 1867.
