The first part of the show will be Richard and the masterful Danny Spencer on guitar, performing an acoustic repertoire and insights into Richard’s life and songwriting. Danny and Richard have been musical partners for well over a decade and Danny has become a well established part of Richard’s musical DNA. After interval, Richard returns to the stage with his full band and an exciting creative sound and lighting production. After more than 40 years of treading the boards on the Australian rock scene, this year Richard will bring together a very different style of show for the State Theatre. With the fantastic response to Richard’s recent memoirs, “The Best Years of Our Lives” in 2015, it occurred to him that audiences might just would appreciate a hybrid show featuring not just the music, but all the often crazy and often emotional stories behind the music. The book covers the halcyon years from the late Sixties in London to the Seventies and Eighties on the Oz rock scene. The musical journey onstage will cover those days of “The Golden Age” the likes of which we will never see again, accompanied by storytelling from one of the true survivors of those times.

    making up stories of me stories of love Love is Paul Kelly’s major subject matter and he writes about it in numerous ways. In the tradition of the bard or balladeer, Kelly tells musical stories about love – first love, love of partner, love of family, love of country, love of God, love gone bad, love filled with regret, love that starts all over again. ‘I think it is the love songs that define him,’ says writer David Leser, interviewed in the documentary. ‘He is the romantic poet in song.’ The pop charts are always filled with love songs, but Paul Kelly’s love songs, while attracting chart success in the 1980s, have never been disposable pop songs. Kelly’s love songs have had, like Keats – who Kelly quotes in the film – a depth and complexity that belie their apparent simplicity. An anthem like ‘To Her Door’ talks about break-up and reconciliation in stark and unsentimental terms; ‘Before Too Long’ addresses how a potential ‘suitor’ views the relationship of the woman he wants to be with; ‘When I First Met Your Ma’ speaks both poetically and directly about Kelly meeting his first wife Hilary; ‘I Can’t Believe We Were Married’ looks at that former marriage from the distance that time offers; and ‘Love is the Law’ is a paraphrase of 1 Corinthians 13, the famous biblical verse often used at weddings: ‘If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.’ Both his former wives are interviewed in the film, and they suggest that Kelly’s desire to dig into what he sees as the fullness of love was difficult at times for them to handle.

    Media Release – Strictly embargoed until Sunday 4 January 2015 Top Names of Australian Film and Television Announced to Present at Star-studded AACTA Awards The countdown to the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards is on, with top names of Australian film and television today announced to present at the star-studded Ceremony, held in Sydney and broadcast on Network Ten. Australia’s biggest celebration of screen, the 4th AACTA Awards will see AACTA President Geoffrey Rush present along with AACTA Award winners Lachy Hulme and Adam Zwar. A number of leading women of Australian television are also confirmed to present, including Kat Stewart, Marta Dusseldorp and Danielle Cormack, with all three nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Television Drama, adding anticipation to who will win on the night. Australian film and television favourite, and AFI Award winner, Stephen Curry will participate in the show, along with Dan Wyllie, who is nominated for Best Guest or Supporting Actor in a Television Drama for RAKE SERIES 3. Turkish actor/writer/director, Yilmaz Erdogan, will make his debut as a presenter and nominee at the 4th AACTA Awards. Erdogan is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in THE WATER DIVINER, competing alongside Patrick Brammall (THE LITTLE DEATH), Robert Pattinson (THE ROVER) and TJ Power (THE LITTLE DEATH).
