2 Happy Thanksgiving & Warm Holiday Greetings

Greetings and Salutations:

First item on the agenda is wishing everyone a great Thanksgiving. This is a special time of the year - embrace it, enjoy it, with family and friends.

We are trying to be positive and move forward with things we enjoy. Some good news: Frank Delrossi, long time member and one of the founding fathers of our club has sent me an album dating back over twenty five years ago with some great pictures of the past. With each edition of Bird Talk we add a few photos of days gone by and give you some insight into who and where it was taken. This month we start with a photo of Tony Colonari former VP and like Frank he also was one of the early members, and a strength and foundation for this club.

December 8th Town of Oyster Bay Food Drive: Flyer is in the extra pages of this newsletter.

Vets Home in Yaphank in December: This event has also been canceled because of Covid

Saturday October 24th at The North Fork Road House in Mattituck: On this day the Lone Ranger and Tonto (Art Fleming & I) headed out east for a car show at the restaurant sponsored by The North Folk Cruisers. It was overcast most of the day. We stayed about four hours and then saddled up and headed west. Figure about twenty cars and took some pictures for the extra pages of the edition.

Sunday November 8th at The Sunrise Mall in Massapequa/Blue Angel Car Show: During the first week of November I received an e- mail from Dave Evans, one of our club members and it included the flyer for the show. The theme was Suicide Prevention. So, as you all saw I e- mailed the flyer to all of our members. I heard from Ken Weinberg, and Ron Kohlmann that they wanted to come to the event. So I called Art Fleming and he told me ―I’m in‖ So Art played Tonto and we met Ken at the park in ride in Melville at 9 ish and off to the show we went. Ron arrived at the show just a few minutes after we arrived. Figure hundreds of vehicles. My number was 233 and the place was packed. I ran into Steve Siben who brought two cars from his collection, his Ford and . As the four of us were taking in the rays we ran into the Kings Park contingent. Charlie Armstrong, my Uncle Bob Weiner, Ernie Plymouth, and Bennie and the Jet. I miss those guys during this year of Covid but it was great to see them. Took some pictures and stayed a few hours with no porta potties, I was in trouble. Just before packing up and heading out we ran into John Guiliano wearing his Thunderbird Alliance Shirt. My hero. Overall it was good to be out, and yes, we were wearing our masks and there were no reported injuries.

Sean Connery 1930 – 2020: One of my favorite actors in the world passed away this past week. In my opinion the best 007 there was. In 1962 when the first Bond film came out I think I waited in line for over an hour to get in and see Dr No. In the movie the Untouchables, in which he won an Oscar for his supporting role in the film. The line in the movie when Eliot Ness asked him how we are going to get Capone, his answer was ―They bring a knife, you pull a gun. They send one of yours to the hospital and you send one of theirs to the morgue.‖ He will be missed.

VTCI Newsletter Contest: This year Art won a Silver Certificate to go with his other awards from the National Club.

100th Birthday Drive-By for WWII Veteran/B-24 Crew Member Mr. Bud Rosch/Saturday December 5th: Saturday December 5th there will be a birthday parade for Mr. Rosch. In the extra pages of the edition of BT there is much more info.

This Month’s Front Cover: Allen Lipp and his gorgeous 1957 Thunderbird.

Looking to 2021 Meetings and Events: For now there will be no indoor meetings for January thru March. In April and into May we will start our outdoor meeting at Burger King in Farmingdale on Wednesday the 14th and on Sunday May 16th, which is Thunderbird Appreciation Day nation- wide. It’s hard to predict past those two events until we get some good news regarding the pandemic.

…and you’re welcome.

12 ALLEN LIPP 1957 DUSK ROSE THUNDERBIRD When I was asked to provide the background for my 1957 Thunderbird, it brought back great memories. In the summer of 2015, a close friend and fellow car aficionado knew I was looking for a baby bird. During his travels throughout long is- land, he heard of one that was for sale, but it needed work, a lot of work. In October 2015 the deal was made, and I owned my first bird. This resulted in driving home very slowly on dry rotted tires for over 40 miles. The only history I have on the Thunderbird prior to my purchase was about the previous owner who must have been from Missouri. I was able to purchase this car from a mechanic that had put a lien on the car for a customer’s nonpayment of repairs. He informed me that the customer inherited the car and it had been sitting in Missouri for many years and not running since its last inspection July 1989 (Missouri). After my inspection prior to purchase I knew the car had been previously restored. Once I was able to have the car stripped to bare metal, I could tell it was a poorly done backyard restoration. I knew from identifying the throttle linkage it had parts from other cars brazed together, which was only the beginning of the poor workmanship. Everything from the lights to the horns was wired incorrectly. I could go on and on about all the things that were wrong and had to be re- done. It took me least 4 years to get it on road and restored to show able condition, but only after getting to know all the Thunderbird parts suppliers by their first names.

But as they say, it’s never really finished.
