CENTRAL MEETING LOCATION CHANGES Effective Wednesday, March 7th, the Central Wednesday Nite Meeting

will be held in the

WAR MEMORIAL BUILDING

Plenty Free Parking ... Air Conditioned ... Comfortable Seats ... Better Acoustics

COORDINATING COUNCIL CHRONICLES— The 123rd regular meeting of the Coordinating Council of Alcoholics Anonymous of San Diego was called to order by Chairman Bud Stout. A roll call by the Secretary found 27 Coordinators present, a sufficient number for a quorum. The Twelve Traditions were read by Ralph Herrick of the La Jolla Group. Minutes of the meeting held January 9, 1956 were approved as read,

REPORT BY COMMITTEES —

Business Committee — Chairman Chet Martin reported a surplus of $535.75 for the Centra] Office operation during January. This large "in the black" figure was due to yearly payments on Buck-A-Month committments, profits from the Annual Banquet and the New Year's Party. Group contributions hit a new low with only $211.00. The decline in group contributions has reached an alarming state and every group is urged to improve their figure for February. Dig a little deeper every meeting. Let's keep the CO in the black.. .every month during 1956. Program Committee— Chairman Jim Bratten reported arrangements had been concluded for the use of the War Memorial Building in Balboa Park for our Central (Wednesday Nite) meetings. The first meeting in this fine new location will be on March 7th. The rental for the new facilities will be $135. 00 per month, within the figure authorized by the Coordinating Council. Public Relations Committee — Chairman Frank Surman reported the progress being made with Mr. Tuttle, Chairman of the California Alcoholic Commission, and it was good news. Due to the efforts of Chairman Frank and A1 Houser, AA will play an important role in the work done by the State.

INSTITUTIONAL MEETINGS NEED YOUR HELP

Unless a large number of volunteers are obtained immediately, San Diego AA will fail its obligation in Institutional work. Chairman Surman and his small committee are doing the best they can under the circumstances but their small number is far from adequate for such important work. They need help., .badly! Why don't you give them a hand, plan to attend one or more institutional meetings each month., .indicate your desire to help by contacting Surman, Wayne McCormick or Rusty Harmon. Do it now! The PRC meets the last Tuesday of each month at the Alano Club, 7:30 p.m. OLD BUSINESS — By a vote of 16 to 11, the Council directed that the salary of the Executive Secretary of the Central Office be maintained at $355.00 per month. This was a recorded vote and the Secretary was instructed to include the results in the minutes of the meeting. Sunday, July 1, 1956, was selected as the date for the annual AA Picnic. It will be held in Oak- ridge Park and the responsibility for the affair was voted into the hands of the Business Committee No single individual was chosen Chairman. On a motion that carried, the War Memorial Building was selected as the site for our annual New Year's Eve Party. The Program Committee Chairman was instructed to complete arrangements for its use at a figure of $200.00. Mary Stout was elected by acclamation to serve as Chairman of this big AA affair.

NEW BUSINESS — Red Haynes was elected by acclamation to the Program Committee. Red earned his spurs by serving out Russ Budd's term. The Council was urged to provide names that would answer 12th Step calls referred to them after 11 p.m. by the AA Answering Service. In March there will be elected a woman to the Program Committee. Submit the names of those capable to handle this important assignment.

There being no further business, the Council adjourned. The next regular meeting will be held on Monday, March 5th at 8 p.m. at the Alano Club.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE POINTERS — The excitement and enthusiasm over the change from Craftsmen Hall to the War Memorial Building for the Central Meeting did not prevent the PC from coming up with a dandy schedule of speakers for February. Here is the program schedule

Indicate your interest by attending the PRC meeting held on the last Tuesday of each month at the Alano Club, 8 p.m. Semi-Institutional Meeting — Each Monday evening at 7 o'clock there is an AA meeting con ducted at Vauclain Home. The Twelve Tradi tions were read hy Jack Klepper of the Lemon Grove group. Minutes of the Council meeting held on April 2nd were approved as read,

PERMANENT COMMITTEE REPORTS: Business nommTttPP? Chairman Chet Martin reported a deficit of $68.39 Tor the Central Office operation during April 195^. For the first four months of 195^ the CO has an operating surplus of $319*63 which is good news despite the sub stantial drop in group contributions during the same period. Program Committee: Chairman Jim Bratten reported an imposing list of out-of- town speakers were scheduled for May and urged the Coordinators to encourage attendance at the Wednesday Nite Central meeting. Every effort is being made to improve the coffee serving situation and to acquire a better PA system. Public Relations; Chairman Frank Surman reported no new developments in the State Alcoholic Program, He further advised that the next meeting of the Institutional Committee will be held at the Pathfinders, 1223 12th Avenue at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 28th. Everyone interested in this vital 12th Step Work is urged to attend. PICNIC COMMITTEE: In the absence of Red Hade's, Chaiiman of the I956 Picnic Committee, Chet Martin advised the meeting that all plans were moving along smoothly. However, when questioned from the floor regarding menu arrangements, things did not proceed smoothly. It was apparent that all Coordinators were not satisfied with the menu nor with the cater er employed to provide it. Chet explained the attitude of the Business Committee and asked for a vote of confidence, which he received, although it was not unanimous. Chet indicated the possibility of reconsideration of the menu. MORE ON THIS NEXT MONTH,

PROGRAM COMMITTEE MEMBER: Three names were submitted for this important post and Mike Fry Anderson was elected on the first ballot, ll-i|-4.

NEW BY-LAWS: The Chairman advised the Coordinators that completed copies of the new by laws, which become effective July 1st, were available for the groups. He urged that each group, when convenient, study and understand the new policies. Each Coordinator was given as many copies as desired.

IMPORTANT JUNE ELECTIONS; To emphasize its importance and to make it easier for groups to select candidates for the June elections, the CO has provided a sample ballot. It contains all the offices to be filled and the necessary requirements to hold the office. Study it carefully and name the right person for the right position. Give this matter the time and consideration it deserves. Elections will be held at the next regular meeting of the Co ordinating Council on June 4th,

NEW BUSINESS: A motion to instruct the Program Committee to present birthday cakes at the beginning of the Wednesday Nite meeting was defeated by a vote of 14 to 4...A motion to instruct the Central Office to supply each group secretary with a list of all group secre taries was defeated by a vote of I6 to 2...Jane Bush, Norma Scott and Howard Sheldon were appointed to work out a permanent plan of distribution of the "Three Month Sobriety Tokens". Their findings will be submitted to the Council at its next regular meeting.

ANONYMITY and the COORDINATOR: The Ocean Beach group thru its Coordinator^ Doc Morin, sub mitted to the Council a letter severely condemning the Editor of the "Coordinator" for using full names in its reporting. The Ocean Beach group contends such practice is an outright violation of anonymity and contrary to the Traditions. The Ocean Beach letter proved unnecessary since such practice will be prohibited under the new by-laws.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:10 p.m. Next regular meeting will be held at the Alano Club, 8 p.m. Monday, June 4th. COORDINATING COUHCIL CHRONICLES -- The 127th meeting of the Coordinating Council of Al coholics Anonymous of San Diego was called to order by Chairman Bud Stout. A roll call by the Secretary found 23 Coordinators present, sufficient for a quorum. The Twelve Traditions were read by Norma Scott of the Del Mar group. Minutes of the Council meet ing held May 7th were approved as read,

PERMANENT COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Business committee; Ben Edgerton, pinch hitting for Chairman Chet Martin, reported a deficit of $124.15 in the Central Office operation for May. There was a substantial decline in both group and Buck-A-Month contributions during May which accounts for the sharp rise in the deficit figure. The Central (Wednesday Nite) Meeting showed a surplus of $38.91 for May. For the first five months of this year the Central Office has an operating surplus of $195.

Program Committee: Chairman Jim Bratten reported that although the PC was operating in the black, the attendance at the Wednesday Nite meetings was falling short of expect ations. All Coordinators were urged to promote attendance to this important meeting. The Public Address system at the War Memorial Building has been reconditioned and is now functioning satisfactorily. Changes are being made in the seating arrangements and the host groups will act as ushers at all future meetings.

Public Relations; Chairman Frank Surman reported that recommendations had been made to the State on their rehabilitation program in San Diego, by the San Diego Committee appointed for that purpose. An excellent study had been made and the findings quite conclusive. More on this later. At this point Frank let loose a blast at the lack of interest shown by AA members in Institutional Work. Meetings set up to handle this im portant phase of AA work have very poor attendance, a fact that proves very discouraging to the Committee. This group needs your help. Why not give a few hours a month to this vital job. Contact Frank, — that's all you have to do.

PICNIC COMMITTEE — Chairman Red Haynes reported that "everything was shaping up in great shape", that's what the man said. Anyway, Red assured the Council that all was well for another great AA Picnic, They do need prizes for the kids. Wanna donate one? Get in touch with Howard at the Central Office. It will be a big help. See you Sunday, July 1st at Oakridge Park. Come a running.

COORDINATING COUNCIL: Richard McN had a quorum for the August 2nd meeting: 17 were present. Morris H. of the Men's group read the 12 Traditions; otherwise— '

a) Chairman Ben E. of the Business Committee reported that Central Office income showed a "big leap in July but, since the picnic and Chula Vista dance were included, group donations were about the same. Income Jan. 1st to July 31st, $4615.expenses that period, $4190.50; surplus on July 31st, $425.07.

Buck-of-the-Month for the first six months was $1059, as compared to $715 ^or the same period a year ago. Does your group have an ample supply of Buck-of-the-Month envelopes, and do the members know about this easy, personal way to help support the Central Office? This easier, softer way pays about 23^ toward helping the new person to the program— and you might note here that Group contributions pay ^2%, the banquet and picnic 23^, the remainder of 2^ made up by the Big Book and various literature.

b) Chairman Juanita C, of the Institutional Committee reported that a new meeting site is Vauclain Home, the TB annex of the County Hospital. First meeting is scheduled for 7^00 pm August 6th and regularly then - and thereafter. Plans are to have a patient-run meeting, AA's assisting-- and this will be valuable 12th Step work for you who can spare the time.

Juanita also reports the Men's Section of institutional work is adequately covered, but can use more volunteers; the Women's Section needs more names of members available for visits to both Women's Psycho and V/omen's Jail. Those willing, call Howard, BElmont 9-1366. c) Chairman Jim B. of the Program.Committe"® reported a-8urplus_of $11.44 for_jTulyj_ but feelj. ^ the word just isn't getting around that those Wednesday meetings are well worth attending. Planned speakers for August are:

SEPT. 5th: RALPH FEATHERSTONE A feather in our cap to book this man -- but tentative as yet. Chairman, to be announced Steps, to be announced Hosts, Alpine d) Gordon S, of Chula Vista is the newly-elected member of the Program Committee, (That Chula Vista Group is doing some fine programming all its own.' — co-eds.)

On the matter of elections: it is important (or should be) in naming members for the various committees, to be certain they understand the importance of attending committee meetings. The By-laws clearly state that a member who misses two meetings of a com mittee will be reported to the Council for replacement. In this connection, it was voted that a member, elected to fill the unexpired term of another, will be eligible for election to a full term in the same job at the expiration of the shorter term. Next month, Coordinators are asked to bring the name of a woman nominee for the Program Committee; also, the name of a man for the same committee, to be elected for the unexpired term of two months of Dave S., 20-i^0 Group.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CONFERENCE: The Conference Co-Chairman, Jim B, of North Park, made a preliminary report, with this info: Members of local committees to be named at a meeting of the Area Assembly on August 8th at the War Memorial Building. So far, the only localities on the various committees are Jim B., Bud S, (our New York Delegate) who is Assistant Finance Officer, and Bud H,, on the Conference Program Committee. Dates for this Conference are September 21st, 22nd and 23rd, with the U.S. Grant Hotel as headquarters and much of the activity in Balboa Park, Groups are to receive full info in the near future,

Jim B, says that in his experience he*s never seen plans move so smoothly, that enthusi asm is snowballing, and Conference attendance is expected to be between 3500 and 5000,

SOCIAL EVENTS: The Annual Banquet, and some dances—

Preliminary arrangements have been made for the l6th Annual San Diego AA Banquet to be held in Balboa Park's War Memorial Building, the evening of Saturday, November 17th, The program will follow along the same lines as last year, with a top-flight AA speaker— and dancing from 10 'til midnight. Final plans will be announced in these columns in September.

The Pathfinders are tossing another big dance Saturday, August 25th, at the Wednesday Club House (6th and Ivy Lane) — dancing, refreshments and all the usual from 8 'til 12, and the price $1,

The Alano Club, according to Manager Tom M., plans to tling one in mid-October. No details yet; this is just to post the news of the Club's intent.

....and see below for THOSE GIRLS AGAIN:

On Thursday, August 9th, the committees for the 11th Annual Dance of the AA Women of San Diego will meet at the Club at 7*30 Grace B., Chairman, announces that plans are well underway, Danny Bale's Orchestra with Bill Rossi at the piano (and he's wonderfulI) has been engaged, and the usual good eats and drinks -- coffee and non-alky punch, that is will be included in the price of admission. The girls plan the usual fine selection of prizes and the usual games of skill. This is the only purely social function planned for the weekend of the Con ference, and Grace anticipates the best dance ever. Don't forget the date, Saturday, Sep tember 22nd, at the War Memorial Building, dancing from 9:00 pm.

And speaking of the food and the prizes, we hope all who can will bring a home-baked cake. There will be a prize for the best-decorated cake, as usual. Also as usual, the annual Green Stamp Drive is on; if you can spare some to help get extra prizes for the dance, bring them to any of the girls or send them to Helen G., 1777 Morena Blvd., SD 10. These AA parties are sorta like a couple of Chinamen taking in each other's wash; we ask you for things like cakes and stamps, ask you to buy a ticket to the dance, give you a wonderful time and then give it all back— thru AA and mostly at the local level.'

VIVA LA FIESTAi The Fiesta Dance sponsored by the Chula Vista Group produced a whopping $113.75 for the Central Office. From all of us— thanks, Chula Vista, you're tops, and do it again soon. The groceries... ah!
