The Official Newsletter of the San Diego Model Car Club January 2007
The Official Newsletter of the San Diego Model Car Club January 2007 . Most of us never give this a second thought, but without a place to meet, our little club wouldn’t exist. The fact that we even know each other and get together once a month is almost totally because we have a place to do it, and what most of us don’t know is that we come under real danger of losing it every single January. For one reason or another, the City Parks and Recreation Dept. changes the rules and criteria on our meeting room every year and as such, one of our members has to jump through hoops and negotiate just to make sure we still have a place to meet for the following year, and that guy is Darryl Gassaway. This latest round of bureaucratic nonsense got me to thinking about Darryl and how important he’s been to our club over the years. Darryl has been with us almost from the beginning and has always held positions of responsibility for just about the same length of time, ranging from newsletter editor to treasurer to probably some other positions I don’t even know about. During the time the club was involved with the Lower Left Coast Model Car Contest, Darryl, along with Dan King, ram-rodded that event every year and although as president, I never approved of the club’s involvement in it, I have to applaud Darryl’s tireless efforts in making that event a success. In addition, Darryl has be come a true ambassador of the model car building hobby, especially as it pertains to the Southern California area. -

The focus of this paper is workplace sexual harassment of wom- en at the intersection of gender and ethnicity, specifically pertaining to Latin American women.6 Challenging the pervasive stereotype of the * Georgetown University Law Center, J.D. -

REPRESENTATION of LATINAS1 AS MAIDS on DEVIOUS MAIDS (2013) Fitria Afrianty Sudirman
42 Paradigma, Jurnal Kajian Budaya Representation of Latinas as Maids on Devious Maids, Fitria Afrianty Sudirman 43 REPRESENTATION OF LATINAS1 AS MAIDS ON DEVIOUS MAIDS (2013) Fitria Afrianty Sudirman Abstract This article aims to analyze the representation of Latinas as maids by examining the first season of US television drama comedy, Devious Maids. The show has been a controversy inside and outside Latina community since it presents the lives of five Latinas working as maids in Beverly Hills that appears to reinforce the negative stereotypes of Latinas. However, a close reading on scenes by using character analysis on two Latina characters shows that the characters break stereotypes in various ways. The show gives visibility to the Latinas by putting them as main characters and portraying them as progressive and independent women who also refuse the notion of white supremacy. Keywords Latina, stereotypes, television, Devious Maids. INTRODUCTION Latin Americans have grown to be the largest minority group in the United States (US). According to the 2010 US Census, those identifying themselves as Hispanic/Latino Americans increased by 43% from the 2000 US Census, comprising 16% of the U.S total population. The bureau even expected that by 2050, the Hispanic/Latino population in the U.S. will be 132.8 million or 30% of the total population, which means one out of three Americans is a Hispanic/Latino. However, the increasing number of Latin Americans does not seem to go along with the portrayal of them in the US television. Research shows that they remain significantly under-represented on TV, only 1%-3% of the primetime TV population (Mastro-Morawitz, 2005). -

Placing the current explorations of popular culture in historical context, the article argues that popular culture’s study and studies in the sociology of culture can illuminate many of the classic concerns that animate sociology and related fields, such as the social organization and power of institutions, debates about public life and the formation of public opinion, concerns about the relationship between consumption, social status, and politics of the privileged elite, and the role of media in the development of social movements and in individual and subcultural understandings. The article considers how popular cultural studies are currently shaping the study of social life, and concludes by considering trends that might be encouraged among students and emergent scholars seeking to study in this area. Introduction ‘Pop Ph.D.s: How TV Ate Academics’, a recent New York Times headline reads (Lewis 2006). In this news story, popular culture is presented as a surprising and somewhat questionable topic for a thesis. -
