Hosted by three-time Grammy- winning artist Snarky Puppy, the festival will feature a special set from Snarky each day along with performances from an eclectic list of international superstars including: The Wood Brothers; The Flecktones Trio feat. Béla Fleck, Victor Wooten and Futureman; Robert Glasper; Lionel Loueke (artist at large), Joshua Redman, Michael League, & Larnell Lewis; Eliades Ochoa (Buena Vista Social Club great); Kitailo feat. Buika; JoJo Mayer/Nerve; Knower; Mark Guiliana’s BEAT Music; Under One Sun; Weedie Braimah & the Hands of Time; Paris Monster; C4 Trio; Harold López-Nussa Trio; and GroundUP artists Charlie Hunter & Silvana Estrada; Banda Magda; Becca Stevens; FORQ; Roosevelt Collier; Breastfist; Sirintip; and Alina Engibaryan. "After an incredible first year of the GroundUP Music Festival -- dubbed by some as the Art Basel of Music -- where attendees traveled to Miami Beach for the festival from 37 states and 34 countries, our goal is to continue to create a transformative annual event for South Florida and worldwide audiences,” says Miami Beach native and GroundUP Music CEO Paul Lehr. Added Snarky Puppy bandleader and GroundUP Music founder Michael League, “our focus is not to expand, but to build the most ideal experience for both artist and audience while continuing even farther down the road of musical diversity in our programming.” Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and 2017 GroundUP Music Festival performer David Crosby urged, “I don’t think you’ll get a better shot at hearing real music than at this festival. The North Beach Bandshell’s Amphitheater and sprawling adjacent Palm Grove Park and beachfront complex will once again host the festival during the three-day festival with intimate master classes and workshops and personal interactions with the artists, and top local chefs including Michelle Bernstein serving inspired food and libations in the park. Partner hotel, the Deauville Beach Resort - site of the Beatles’ first U.S. appearance after the Ed Sullivan Show – will serve as the venue for late night concerts on two stages featuring new artists and surprises. With room for only about 1500 people a day, tickets will go fast. The intent is to keep the space comfortable and intimate in order to create an optimal experience for both the audience and artists. Tickets and info at: www.groundupmusicfestival.com ABOUT SNARKY PUPPY Formed in 2003 by bandleader/bassist/composer Michael League, Snarky Puppy is a “D.I.Y. juggernaut” (New York Times) that has won three Grammy awards in the last four years. Through it all, the band has kept a rigorous touring schedule of 100-200 shows per year. They are a collective of sorts, with as many as 25 members in regular rotation. Each maintains busy schedules as sidemen (with such artists as Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and D’Angelo), producers (for Kirk Franklin, and David Crosby), and solo artists (many of whom are on the band’s independent label, GroundUP Music). At its core, the band represents the convergence of both black and white American music culture with various accents from around the world. Japan, Argentina, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Puerto Rico all have representation in the group’s membership. But more than the cultural diversity of the individual players, the defining characteristic of Snarky Puppy’s music is the joy of performing together in the perpetual push to grow creatively. The company was founded in 2012 by Michael League as a new home for his band Snarky Puppy and other independent artist he respected.     Snarky Puppy – Live At The Royal Albert Hall (50:22 + 48:57, 2 CD, 3 LP, GroundUp Music, 2020) Erstaunlich, welche Acts abseits des allgemeinen Mainstreams mittlerweile die Royal Albert Hall füllen. Es gibt also doch noch Hoffnung für den guten Geschmack. Das formidable amerikanische Musikerkollektiv Snarky Puppy um Bandleader Michael League machte auf seiner Tour im letzten Jahr ebenfalls in der altehrwürdigen Veranstaltungsstätte in London Halt. Bei diesem Livealbum stand logischerweise der Fokus auf dem letzten Studioalbum „Immigrance„, welches gleich mit sechs Songs vertreten ist. Die Setlist fokussiert sich trotz der inzwischen recht umfangreichen Diskografie der Amerikaner neben dem Material von ‚Immigrance‘ lediglich auf weiteres Material aus den Alben „We Like It Here“ (2014), „Culcha Vulcha“ (2016), sowie überraschenderweise zwei Songs aus der wesentlich jazzigeren Frühphase „The World Is Getting Smaller“ (2007), die aber wesentlich luftiger und dem sonstigen Material angepasst daherkommen. Warum sich Snarky Puppy über die Jahre mittlerweile eine recht breite, teils altersmäßig sehr junge Fanbasis erspielt haben, liegt vor allem im differenzierten Stilmix begründet, der sich eben recht weit außerhalb des reinen Jazz bzw. Jazz Rocks bewegt. Da sind Elemente aus Rock, Funk, R&B, Soul, Latin, Electronic oder World Music zu vernehmen, zudem vorangetrieben durch feingliedrige, mitreißende Rhythmik und sehr lässiges Feeling. Die sehr große Besetzung versteht sich immer als Einheit und z.B. trotz der vierfachen(!) Keyboardpower wirkt hier nichts überladen, sondern immer exakt auf den Punkt gebracht. Zudem gelingt es, moderne Klangästhetik mit herrlich analogen Sounds aus den Keyboardburgen zu vereinen, die bisweilen durch messerscharfe Bläsersätze gewürzt werden. Die Band interpretiert das Songmaterial im Vergleich zu den Ursprungsversionen keineswegs anders oder bricht die Songstrukturen komplett auf, dafür werden jedoch die Soloparts beliebig verändert bzw.

Newport Jazz Festival ’17: Where To Start On Friday, August 5, the world’s best jazz artists will once again make their yearly pilgrimage to Fort Adams for another exciting Newport Jazz Festival. Over the past few years, the festival has been stepping up the line-ups and has done an amazing job of balancing the old guard with the young lions, simultaneously showing how this music has gotten to where it is and where it’s headed next. The diversity of groups and sounds is no less prevalent this year, with what has to be one of the more stacked bills in recent history. While we may not be able to hit on every “must see” act in this feature, here is a glimpse into who to watch out for and the sets you’ll probably be running to. For the past few years, Snarky Puppy has been a relentless force in the international jazz scene. Formed in 2003 by composer/bassist Micheal League, this powerhouse ensemble has performed thousands of shows across six continents, and has collaborated with Lalah Hathaway, Laura Mvula, Salif Keïta, David Crosby, N’Dambi, Becca Stevens and Jacob Collier. Their intricately arranged and flawlessly executed charts are as stunning as the whirlwind improvisations traded off throughout the group. I can’t say this enough: Cécile McLorin Salvant is the best jazz vocalist working today and absolutely one of the all-time heavies. Her melodic phrasing and command of the depths of her voice are truly unmatched. Beyond her once-in-a-generation talent, her band is loaded with chops, giving this ensemble an edge in crafting unique interpretations of old favorites and outstanding originals and letting Salvant’s voice stretch and dance above the music swirling around her.

    MICHAEL MAYO Whether Michael Mayo is performing with his band, as a guest, or alone with a looper pedal, the LA native’s commanding and other worldly vocalese is quickly gathering critical and commercial acclaim around the globe. Born to two successful musicians, Mayo grew up just a little more than 20 feet from the likes of Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Earth Wind and Fire, and Stevie Wonder. This proximity helped Mayo create a musical path centered around elements of R&B, Soul and Jazz, forging his musical identity long before he hit the stage. Mayo attended the acclaimed Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, only the third vocalist to be accepted into the 20-year-old program, where he learned from the likes of Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Now living in Brooklyn, and still in his 20s, Mayo is a veteran international performer whose highlights include singing at the White House, the Kennedy Center and Renée Fleming’s American Voices Festival, as well as the Panama Jazz Festival. Most recently he has recorded and performed with Herbie Hancock, Jacob Collier, Kneebody, Gretchen Parlato, Josh Groban, Ben Wendel, and Becca Stevens among many others. His own band performance was a standout at the 2019 Playboy Jazz Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, and Monterey Jazz Festival. Signed to Mack Avenue/Artistry Records, Mayo’s debut record BONES, produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Eli Wolf (Norah Jones, Al Green, The Roots) was released on June 4th, 2021.
