KAREN BAIRD HEAD Coach•Fifth Season

Karen Baird is in her fifth season as the head coach of the Eastern Michigan University softball program. She was appointed to the position Sept. 3, 2002. Baird is the sixth coach in the 25-year history of EMU softball. She came to Eastern after serving five years as the head coach at Division III Albion College (1998-2002), where she led the program to confer- ence and national honors. In the 2000 campaign, Albion’s squad posted a Division III-best 3.53 GPA and in 2001, the program won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) tournament championship, the first conference tournament title in school history. Baird has improved the Eagles’ winning percentage every season, from a .136 to a .500 mark last season. She has averaged an increase in over three conference games per season, moving EMU from 4-17 in MAC play to 14-8 last year. She led her squad to back-to-back MAC Tournament appearances, a feat that had not been accomplished since the 1983-84 seasons. Last season, Baird led the Eagles to their sixth MAC Tournament appearance, earning a No. 5 seed. EMU defeated No. 4 Central Michigan 6-0, for the first time since the 2000 season. The victory was Green and White’s first post season win since the 1999 season. EMU also defeated Northern Illinois 8-5 to advance to the tournament semi-finals. The Eagles lost to the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, Western Michigan and Kent State. The Eagles played one of the toughest schedules in the league, playing eight games with teams ranked in the nation’s Top-25 poll. EMU defeated No. 21 Louisville, 3-2, and limited the defending national champion and No. 12 University of Michigan squad to zero hits an in extra-innings contest. The Green and White played 15 games with teams that qualified for the 2006 NCAA Tournament, winning four of them. However, seven of the losses were decided by two or less runs, and four were decided by just one run. In MAC play, the Eagles swept two-game season series with Akron, Ball State and Buffalo. EMU won all three games against Northern Illinois and Toledo. Individually, Baird coached four All-MAC honorees, including the 2006 Player of the Year, Lauren Clark. The team was honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for garnering the eighth highest grade point average in the nation with a 3.41 mark. Two years ago, her third at the helm, Baird led Eastern Michigan to an 11-12 record in Mid-American Conference play and clinched the team’s first appearance in the MAC tournament since the 1999 season, and for just the fifth time in program history. EMU garnered the No. 7 seed, and were eventually ousted by sixth-seeded Bowling Green after dropping a tough decision to No. 2 Central Michigan in the tournament’s first round. The team was honored by the NFCA for eaning the sixth highest GPA with a 3.45. In 2004, the Eagles won 19 games (13 more than 2003), marking the third-best turnaround in program history, and the team’s eight conference wins doubled 2003’s output. The team won eight games on the road, and had another schedule that stacked the Eagles up against some of the nation’s best teams. EMU played three games against Michigan, and pulled off an incredible upset over No. 2 ranked Florida State, May 10, to end the season at Varsity Field. Individually, Baird mentored two All-MAC selections, the first time two Eagles had been honored by the conference at season’s end since the 1999 season. In addition, in October 2004, the team was honored by the NFCA as the softball team with the highest GPA in Division I, garnering a 3.55 team average. In Baird’s first season (2003), she took over a team that had lost 28 games the previous year and that lost 10 letterwinners in the process. She led the team to impressive wins over Indiana, Kent State and eventual MAC champion Western Michigan. KAREN BAIRD’S COLLEGIATE HEAD COACHING SLATE EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY Year Overall Pct. JENNIFER TEAGUE ASSISTANT Coach•SECOND Season

Jennifer Teague is entering her second season as an as- sistant coach with the Eagles. She will once again focus on pitching with the Eastern Michigan softball program. Last season, Teague helped EMU pitchers lower the team’s ERA to a 2.59 mark and total six shutouts. The team rode its outstanding pitching to its sixth MAC Tournament appearance, advancing to the semi-finals. The 31-year-old (6-16-75) Teague spent the 2004-05 season as the volun- teer assistant coach at the University of Michigan, when the Wolverines became the first school east of the Mississippi River to win a Women’s College World Series national championship. Teague was also part of the staff that garnered 2005 National Softball Coaching Staff of the Year honors. A 1999 graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University, Teague arrived in Ann Arbor following a four-year head coaching stint with local NAIA school Concordia Univer- sity from 2001-2004. Teague’s run at Concordia was highlighted by one regional championship and the school’s first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Cham- pionship in 2002. The Cardinals closed out the 2002 season ranked 14th out of 268 NAIA schools across the country. She also coached one NAIA All-American and four all-conference players during her tenure with Concordia. A member of the NFCA, she started her coaching career as an assistant at her alma mater, Indiana Wesleyan, from 1999-2001 following a distinguished playing career, serving as co-captain of the 1998 and ’99 teams. Teague earned NCCAA All-American honorable mention recognition as a senior (1999) after earning NFCA, NAIA and NCCAA all-region honors as a junior in 1998. She was also her team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player in 1998.

Nanette Push • Class of 1998 • 35 Complete Game Shutouts, Perfect Game An outstanding softball player for Eastern Michigan University from 1981-84, Nanette Push was inducted in the EMU Hall of Fame, Oct. 24, 1998. She earned four varsity letters as one of the top pitchers in school history. During her four-year career she set most of EMU's pitching records and is still ranked in the top three in most categories. Her 0.81 career earned-run-average ranks as EMU's best ever. She notched 54 pitching wins during her career, which is still second all-time, and is ranked second in Eastern’s record book in games pitched (99), complete games (76) and strikeouts (459). Push's 12 shutout wins in 1984 and 11 shutouts in 1982 are still the two best single-season efforts in history. Push earned first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors in 1983.

Angie Fielder • Class of 2001 •Second Team All-American Angie Fielder closed out her three-year Eastern Michigan University career May 14, 1988, leaving a new chapter in the record books for softball. Fielder finished as the all-time leader in hits and stolen bases. She also left as the single-season leader in at-bats, hits, batting average and steals. She was named to the Mideast Regional Team and was honored as a second-team All-American, the first EMU softball player so honored. Fielder grew up in Anderson, Ind., and transferred to EMU after playing one season at Ball State. Fielder’s 1986 season, her first at EMU, was shortened to 15 games after she broke her left leg in an outfield collision. In 1987 her career took off. She tied a then season-high batting average at .352 and stole 15 bases. The 1988 campaign marked the pinnacle of her career. Fielder batted a stellar .382, registering 73 hits and scored 33 times. Even more impressive was that she doubled the record for stolen bases in one season, recording 34 thefts.

Melissa Drouillard • Class of 2004 • 1996 MAC Player of the Year Melissa Drouillard-Bater finished her Eastern Michigan University softball career as the 1996 Mid-Ameri- can Conference Softball Player of the Year. Drouillard became the first EMU player to receive the award since its inception in 1988. The Grosse Pointe, Mich. native recorded a .412 average to lead the MAC conference by more than 50 points. The shortstop also led the league with 51 runs batted in (RBI) and tied for the league lead with 32 runs scored. In addition, Drouillard ranked second in the MAC in doubles (17) and home runs (10). Drouillard ended her four-year career as Eastern’s all-time leader in five categories: hits (218), RBI (124), batting average (.322), doubles (43) and home runs (19). She also ranks second in three other career categories: at bats (678), runs (96) and triples (14). Drouillard is third all-time in assists with 376. During her outstanding career, Drouillard also set the single-season records for RBI (51), batting average (.412), doubles (17) and home runs (10). During the 1995 summer she was a third-team All-America selection and was named to the second-team All-Region after an outstanding sophomore year. She also played for the Livonia Daly’s Class-A summer travel team. Drouillard excelled in the field, at the plate and on the pitcher's mound. She is second all-time in appearances (40), games started (38) and complete games (33). She also ranks third all-time with 18 wins during her career. Drouillard-Bater was a 2004 election into the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame.

All of the records are still standing with the exception of batting averegae where she is ranked second all-time. The versatile catcher and outfielder is still among the leaders career statistics. She is ranked in stolen bases (second-72), batting average (third-.311), runs scored (fourth-94), and hits (seventh-172). Varsity Field, the home of Eastern Michigan softball team, opened in the 1980s. The Eagles have hosted many prominent opponents at the facility over the years, including nationally ranked teams such as Michigan and Florida State. In 2006, EMU posted an 11-3 record at Varsity Field and has combined for a 24-6 mark over the past two years. The stadium has a renovated press box (1998), and includes a large bleacher seating area that can accommodate more than 500 fans. New batting cages were added in 2004 and new infield conditioner in the fall of 2005. In 2007, the Eagles will have 13 games at home, including conference rivals Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Kent State and Toledo. On the non-conference slate, the Eagles wel- come Oakland and Big 10 conference member Michigan State to Varsity Field this season. The home opener for EMU is April 6 versus Buffalo. Varsity Field is located south of Huron River Drive, and is the only facility that is still operating within walking distance of EMU’s residence halls on the west side of campus. Bowen Field House and Michael H. Jones Natatorium, home to the track and swimming programs, are located on central campus. The softball team utilizes Bowen Field House during the offseason and the locker room facilities.

More than 500 fans were in attendance for EMU’s upset of nationally ranked Florida State, May 10, 2004. A view of Varsity Field from behind center field.

-41- EMU LOCKER ROOM

The EMU softball locker room, located in Bowen Field House, serves as main location for team chemistry to be built. Players hang out between practices and meetings. The locker room facility was recently renovated, with individual showers along with a computer and television were installed. More locker space was also added. The walls were painted and decals added in 2004.

-42- 2006 season HighLights

In MAC play, the Eastern Michigan softball team swept two-game season series with Akron, Ball State and Buffalo. The Eagles won all three games against Northern Illinois and Toledo.

Heather Han picked an opportune time to hit her first collegiate home run, as she hit a walk-off two run shot in the bot- tom on the seventh with two outs to give the Eagles a 4-3 come-from-behind vic- tory over Toledo (March 25).

Head Coach Karen Baird led the Eagles to their first back-to-back MAC Tournament appearances since the 1983-84 seasons. The 2006 season marked the sixth time that EMU has qualified for the post-season tournament.

-43- 2006 season HighLights

Lauren Clark was named the 2006 MAC Player of the Year at the league post-season banquet, held at Plymouth Park Pavilion in Midland, Mich. She is the second player in EMU history to receive the honor.

During the rainy MAC Championship Tournament, the Eagles de- feated Central Michigan, 6-0. The win over the Chippewas was EMU’s first since the 2000 season and first tournament win since 1999. The Eagles also knocked off Northern Illinois, 8-5, in a come-from-behind victory. Nikki Denman knocked in a school record six runs off two three-run homers. EMU dropped deci- sions to the top two seeds in the tournament, Kent State and Western Michigan. The weather played a large part in post- season play as heavy rain delayed every one of the Eagles’ games.

Fundraising at comerica park

The EMU softball team worked a conces- sion stand for the American League Cham- pion Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park throughout the 2006 season, including dur- ing the World Series. The team was raising money for new equipment.

Jock Jamz: First Place

For the fourth consecutive year, the softball team was declared the winners of the annual Jock Jamz talent show. Each EMU athletic program designs a dance and theme to promote team unity within the Department of Athletics. The team chose The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as its theme for 2006. All proceeds go to Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
