No. 140705155 viii UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRACT The research entitled “Contextual Meaning on My Chemical Romance’s Songs: A Semantic Analysis”. The aims of this research are to find out the types of contextual meaning and to find out the most dominant type of contextual meaning in five of My Chemical Romance’s songs: Welcome To The Black Parade, Teenagers, Famous Last Words, I Don’t Love You, and Disenchanted. The research applies qualitative method and the data are analyzed descriptively. The data are classified based on the theory of Contextual Meaning of Lyons (1977). Based on Lyons’ theory, there are six types of contextual meaning: Context of Person, Context of Place, Context of Time, Context of Formality, Context of Mood, and Context of Subject-matter. The result of this research shows that there are 256 contextual meanings found on five of My Chemical Romance’s song lyrics. After being analyzed, there are 134 Context of Person (55.0%), 6 Context of Place (2.3%), 16 Context of Time (6.3%), 5 Context of Formality (2.0%), 45 Context of Mood (17.6%), and 43 Context of Subject-matter (16.8%). The results of this research show that all types of contextual meaning can be found in the lyrics of five of My Chemical Romance’s songs and Context of Person is the most dominant type of contextual meaning found in the lyrics of five of My Chemical Romance’s songs. The result of this study shows that the elements surrounding a context play an important role to convey the meanings of song lyrics. Tujuan dari penelitian ini ialah untuk menemukan tipe makna kontekstual dan untuk menemukan tipe makna kontekstual terdominan di lima lagu My Chemical Romance: Welcome To The Black Parade, Teenagers, Famous Last Words, I Don’t Love You, dan Disenchanted. Penelitian ini menerapkan metode kualitatif dan data dianalisis secara deskriptif. Data diklasifikasi berdasarkan teori makna kontekstual oleh Lyons (1977). Berdasarkan teori Lyons, terdapat enam tipe makna kontekstual , yaitu: Context of Person, Context of Place, Context of Time, Context of Formality, Context of Mood, and Context of Subject-matter. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 262 makna kontekstual di lirik lima lagu My Chemical Romance. Setelah analisis dilakukan, ditemukan 134 Context of Person (55.0%), 6 Context of Place (2.3%), 16 Context of Time (6.3%), 5 Context of Formality (2.0%), 45 Context of Mood (17.6%), dan 43 Context of Subject-matter (16.8%). Hasil dari penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa Context of Person adalah tipe makna kontekstual yang terdominan dan semua tipe makna kontekstual dapat ditemukan di lirik lima lagu My Chemical Romance. Hasil dari studi menunjukkan bahwa elemen-elemen yang melingkupi sebuah konteks berperan penting dalam menyampaikan makna dari lirik lagu. Language is a means of communication for human therefore human cannot function well without the presence of language in their life. Language is a system of verbal symbol which is used by the member of certain society to convey their messages to others (Wardhaugh, 1977:3) The study of language is called linguistics. It is concerned with identifying the elements of a specific language are related to each other and go together to express more complex meanings.

This analysis will be done methodologically as a content analysis. Song texts are examined in the context of oppression and discrimination and how they relate to social movements. This study will examine different social movements occurring during a timeline stretching from the era of slavery to present day, and how music gives frame to collective identities as well as potential action. The material consisting of song lyrics will be theoretically approached from different sociological and musicological perspectives. This study aims to examine what interpretative frame for social change is offered by music. Conclusively, this study will show that music functions as an informative tool which can spread awareness and encourage people to pressure authorities and make a claim on their Human Rights. Theories on gender, masculinity and femininity will be used to analyze both the lyrics and the music videos of these two bands, indicating how they perform gender lyrically and visually. Likewise a short introduction on emo music will be given, to gain a better understanding of the genre and the subculture. It will become clear that the emo subculture allows for men and women to explore their own identity. This is reflected in the music associated to the emo genre as well as their visual representation in their music videos. This essay will explore how both a male fronted band, My Chemical Romance, and a female fronted band, Paramore, perform gender. All studio albums and official music videos will be used to investigate how they have performed gender throughout their career.

    Com as mãos sujas de sangue: música, emoções e romantismos Raphael Bispo 1 Resumo O presente artigo tem como proposta analisar as canções produzidas por bandas de rock classificadas de “emo” na atualidade. Resgatando contrastivamente o imaginário romântico do século XVIII – que tem no livro Os sofrimentos do Jovem Werther, de Johann Wolfgang Goethe, uma de suas melhores elaborações –, busca- se compreender mais precisamente as diferentes estratégias e inflexões no processo histórico de elaboração de uma subjetividade interiorizada e autonomizada, típica da modernidade ocidental, tendo como base duas experiências artísticas distintas. Assim, apontando as semelhanças, diferenças e especificidades existentes entre dois momentos de registros estéticos de nossa cultura (a literatura romântica “clássica” de Goethe e a música emo da banda My Chemical Romance), além de se constatar a permanência de uma espécie de “sombra romântica” (DUARTE, 2004) nas artes de hoje, o artigo procura também jogar luz sobre as configurações da vida íntima no Ocidente moderno, mais precisamente sobre como têm operado historicamente nossas experiências amorosas, a partir de narrativas sobre o amor e o self formuladas em momentos históricos específicos.     CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity.
