Four new species of Orchidaceaelrom By A. S. George

Abstract Thre€species of Caladeia are described-C.torynephota spr)ov., C. crebrasp.r\ov. and C. graiinifolia sp.nov. and one speciesof PterostylisP dngu.ildsp.nov.

Introduction As a result of checking the corect application of all the names which have been applied to Western Australian , it has become clear that a nun6er of taxa are undescribed. While many belong to confused groups which require detailed revision the four describedlere are quile distinct and are published so that the Checklist which follows this paper may be nlore complere.

thick, almost fleshycalli. C. raliata has longer.pedanthsegments, the being35-55 mm long, and acuminatepetals. All the varieties-ofC. iongiclavata have a much shorter fringe on the labellum, and the fimbria are often finely scabrid. C. dilatqta has larger lateral lobes on the labellum, and the are not clubbed. The speciesflowers in late November and December two to three weeks later thal] C. rcdiata, at least one month later than C. dilatqta and two months later than C. longiclavato. It is the last of the Western Caladeniqs to fl.ower " ", each season. The specific epithet, meaning club-bearing refers to the clubs on all perianth segmentsas well as the labellr"rm. This spcciesbelongs to the Seclion Cqlonenaand is at once distirlguished from all other speciesof the Sectionby the very denseband of linear calli. It is also u;rusualto lild the apicesof the lateralsepals covered with glandstvhile the dorsal sepal js l'rot; in otl'rer species the sepals are either al'i glandular- cltLbbed or all smooth. The closest aflinity appears io be with Cqlqdenia radlara Nicholls, which has a longer, narrower labellum and thicker, less crowded calli. The only other speciesof the Section with cro*ded, linear calli is C. lobataR. Fitzg.,but eventhere they are thicker and much lessdense than in C. o'ebro, whrle the flower is iarger, with upturned lateral sepals, and the labellumhas large lateral lobes.

.,1\\ il}I[\ \\\ " " Calacleniacrebra was discovered by Mrs. E. Surnmersof Green Grove south of Dongara, and was brought to Iny atlention by Mr. A. C. Burns of Geraldton. It is known from a relatirely smrll area but is Locallycommon and may be found in similal habitats along this coastal strip.
