Seniors Programs and Services – An Overview

The District of Muskoka's Seniors Programs and Services helps support the health, well-being, socialization, and community engagement of community-dwelling older adults in Muskoka. Our goal is to connect older adults, families, and caregivers to information, services, programs, and initiatives in Muskoka. WISE Mobile Seniors Active Living Centre WISE stands for Wellness Initiatives for Seniors Engaged. WISE Mobile Active Living Centre offers free programs for older adults 55+ in multiple locations across Muskoka. New participants are required to complete a program registration form, available at www.seniorsinmuskoka.ca or onsite at your first program. Community Connect Community Connect is a two hour program offered once or twice a month in multiple locations across Muskoka. Each program features general interest topics, health and wellness education, fitness and balance training, recreational activities, meals or snacks for participants to enjoy, and much more! Participants are asked to RSVP by 1:00 p.m. one business day before each program.

Workshops These programs allow for progressive learning and provide older adult participants with an opportunity to gain education or develop skills that require a greater amount of time than our recurring WISE program allows for. Examples of past topics include Cooking for One, Memoir Writing, Acrylic Painting, and a handbell choir. Intergenerational Mentorship Program This program exists to connect the young and the young at heart. We have developed partnerships with several community organizations, including schools, camps, and child care agencies. HAPPY Days HAPPY stands for Healthy Aging Promotions and Programs for You. These day-long, healthy living events are held in rural communities and provide information about services available to older adults within their immediate community. The day includes exhibits, presentations, demonstrations, and a free lunch. Combined Fitness Class This hour long, non-impact class incorporates a safe cardio workout, balance training, strength and endurance training, stretching, and lots of fun! Volunteer Led Programs Senior Community Advisors (SCA) The SCA program allows the District to connect directly with seniors living in rural or remote areas in Muskoka and learn about their specific individual or community needs through peer elected volunteers. Friendly Visitor Program Develop a meaningful, fun relationship through regular, one on one social visits from one of our volunteers. Pen Pal Program Make a new friend through written communication and experience the joy of receiving a regular piece of mail. Information Line We want to ensure that when any older adult encounters a challenge, they know there is a place they can turn. Looking for a resource or service but not sure where to find the information you are looking for? Need some assistance in navigating the support system? Please contact us using the number below.

Seniors Programs and Services Volunteer Opportunities

The Seniors Programs and Services Team would be thrilled to have you volunteer with us. As a volunteer you would be a vital part of achieving our goals for our programs. Volunteers touch the lives and hearts of our clients by giving of their time and talents. There are a number of volunteer positions to consider: Administrative Assistant Lend support to the Seniors Programs and Services Team in areas of copying, filing, managing documentation, and recording program information. Friendly Caller Could you spare one or two hours a month? We are looking for assistance in making our friendly telephone reminder calls for seniors programs and events. This is a great option for those who wish to volunteer from home. Friendly Visitor Volunteer Program Do you know the value of brightening someone’s day? Consider becoming a One on One Friendly Visitor! As little as a one hour visit for conversation and socializing can make a huge difference in the life of a senior who might otherwise feel isolated and alone. Flexible scheduling based on the senior and volunteer’s availability.

Newsletter Editor Our newsletter is a quarterly publication with updates from Seniors Programs and Services and a place to share good news, fun activities and snapshots of what’s happening in our community. A Newsletter Editor Volunteer will ensure the success in keeping this project going by providing assistance with gathering information, checking for accuracy, organizing content, and proofreading.

Peer Support Committee Volunteer The goal of Seniors Programs and Services is to create a community where program participants feel welcomed and supported. Peer Support Volunteers will contribute to fostering this community spirit by mailing birthday, get well, or sympathy cards to program participants.

Pen Pal Volunteer Program Do you enjoy writing letters? Do you appreciate the surprise of receiving personal mail? Imagine the joy you could bring to a senior who has limited social engagement. Become a Pen Pal to a senior in your community! Your letter can make all the difference to someone who feels alone.

Special Events and WISE Assistants Volunteer assistance is paramount in the successful implementation of seniors programs and special events. Tasks include but are not limited to set up, assisting with meal service, decorating, overseeing registration, or clean up duties.

For more information or to apply for any of these positions, please contact: 705-645-2412 OR (toll free) 1-800-461-4215 ext. 4199 [email protected] www.seniorsinmuskoka.ca

Elder Abuse Prevention Quick Tips

Preventing Abuse Plan for your own future when you are still independent.

Be cautious of someone who requests your assets in exchange for taking care of you.

Do not rely only on family members for your care and social life. Seek outside contacts. Develop friends of all ages. Inform your family how you wish to be cared for and how you want your assets spent or maintained.

Families should examine their ability to provide care for an increasingly dependent elder. Plan ahead and learn about the community resources to help older persons and their caregivers.

How To Help

Believe the older adult has an issue. Listen to what they are saying; be non-judgmental. It may take a few visits to have a full understanding of the mistreatment.

Respect confidentiality.

Find other people who can help. Use the resources in the guide.

Help the older adult gain control over the abuse.

Do not act too quickly. Only take immediate action when a crime is being committed or the older adult needs immediate protection.

The best way to help is by providing information, options, and strategies which will cause no further harm.

Seniors Have Choices

Freedom of Choice

As an older adult you have the right to make decisions about your safety and well-being to the full extent of your capacity. This includes being informed about your legal and civil rights, and services to help you.

Assert Your Rights Ask clearly for what you need.

The Seniors Community Advisor (SCA) program allows the District to connect directly with seniors living in rural or remote areas in Muskoka and learn about their specific individual or community needs.

A volunteer (who is a senior in the community) is elected by their peers to serve as the SCA for their communities. The SCA is provided training and begins outreach to learn more about the needs in their respective community. Each SCA has ongoing support from the District's Seniors Programs and Services staff. .www.muskoka.on.ca

The SCA program has been running since 2014 in seven locations, including:

• Ryde • Severn Bridge • Vankoughnet • Dwight / Dorset • MacTier (current vacancy) • Dwight Community Centre • Port Severn • Baysville

There are plans to include Port Carling and other locations in future.

Call Elder Abuse Prevention Muskoka (705) 646-7677 for local WEAAD events and wear purple on June 15th to show your support.

The Muskoka Bell Ringers Winter Recital

What do the songs ”The Sound of Music”, “Amazing Grace”, “Morning Has Broken”, and “Beautiful Dreamer” have in common? They were all played by The Muskoka Bell Ringers at their Winter Recital on March 22, 2019.

Beginning in January, rehearsals took place once a week at the Port Carling Community Centre and McVittie Place in Bracebridge. Both groups worked incredibly hard to learn the technique of playing the bells as well as their respective repertoire.

Most of the choir members had little if any musical experience prior to joining the Muskoka Bell Ringers; yet by the end of season they understood basic concepts of music and rhythm and were working together as a team to create beautiful melodies. Based on all the laughter and fun that took place during rehearsals, passersby would have hardly suspected that they were hard at work!

Interested in joining the Muskoka Bell Ringers for their next season? We’d love to welcome new and returning members! Rehearsals will be taking place in Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, and Port Carling in the fall of 2019. Please visit Seniors Programs’ website or call our information line for more information.

WISE Community Connect - Giving Back

Seniors Programs and Services is honoured to have so many individuals committed to giving back. WISE participants have been actively taking part in two projects recently: the creation of Milk Bag Mats for people without beds in developing countries and Comfort Mitts/Twiddle Muffs and Busy Boards for patients experiencing dementia symptoms. Participants have used multiple program sessions to complete these projects that ultimately go on to help people in our community and abroad. We are extremely proud of their efforts.

The Milk Bag Mat project first came to Seniors Programs and Services in 2017 in the communities of Torrance and Ullswater. Since then it has become an increasingly popular programming choice for a number of communities. These mats go on to provide people in developing countries an invaluable, durable and washable alternative to sleeping on the cold and damp ground. Mats made through the WISE program are sent to a collection centre in Orillia before being shipped overseas where they are needed most. Seniors Programs and Services currently has two looms for making these mats. Each community works on their mat until the project is complete; once a mat is done, another community then has an opportunity to take on this rewarding work.

During our Seniors Programs and Services Participants Meeting held on February 22, 2019, it became clear that our programs should be driven by the participants themselves. Nowhere was more apparent this winter than with a suggestion to make Comfort Mitts for dementia patients. This idea came from a Milford Bay participant. As a result of this suggestion, the WISE Community Connect participants in Milford Bay worked diligently for three months creating a variety of Comfort Mitts and Busy Boards for donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Muskoka.

Shawna Torkoff, Public Education Coordinator with Alzheimer’s Society of Muskoka, visited the Milford Bay Community Connect program on Wednesday April 3, 2019 to deliver an education session to participants. Shawna busted the myths and stigmatisms on dementia and talked about how to maintain good brain health. Following the presentation, WISE Community Connect participants presented Shawna with busy boards and comfort mitts (also known as muffs).

The busy boards feature locks, latches and other familiar hardware that aid people living with dementia with memory and fine motor skills while also enhancing hand- eye coordination, finger dexterity and increased muscle strength. “The concept behind the muffs is that people with dementia like to have something to keep their hands occupied.” shared Shawna. “The muffs keep hands warm, and provide visual, tactile and sensory stimulation”. The boards and muffs will be donated to various individuals and organizations that deal with those living with dementia in Muskoka.

The Seniors Programs and Services department is always open to hearing your suggestions on different vocational projects that can ultimately give back to the community or abroad. We often find that, when these sorts of projects are driven by the people participating in them, there is more of a vested interest and the project is all the more special. If you have a suggestion for a project like this or are interested in seeing one of these projects in your community please reach out to us.

WISE Fitness Programs

Did you know that according to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, adults ages 18 years and older require 150 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more? That is 30 minutes of aerobic exercise 5 days per week or approximately 20 minutes of exercise 7 days per week. In order to measure whether or not your level of activity is at a moderate-to- vigorous intensity level, imagine you are taking a walk with your friend. If you are walking along, singing a song together, you probably are not working at a high enough aerobic intensity. Aim for an aerobic intensity that leaves you slightly out of breath but still allows you to have a conversation with one another.

In addition to these 150 minutes of moderate- to-vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, the guidelines also recommend that older adults 65+ engage in muscle and bone strengthening activities using major muscle groups at least 2 days per week. Taking these measures can help prevent chronic disease and premature death as well as improve or maintain fitness, body weight, mobility, functional independence, bone health, and mental health.

WISE Mobile Active Living Centre currently offers two fitness-based programs – a Combined Fitness Class and Urban Pole Walking Groups.

Combined Fitness Classes offer a great opportunity for older adults to remain active and engage with peers. These non-impact classes, geared to older adults 55+, incorporate a safe cardio workout, balance training, strength and endurance training, stretching, and lots of fun. The classes were piloted at the Ullswater Community Centre this past winter, and, due to popular demand, will be offered in Ullswater once again beginning September 2019.

Urban Pole Walking, also known as Nordic Walking, has tremendous health benefits. For example, Urban Poling exercises 90 percent of your muscles, reduces stress on your lower joints, burns up to 47 percent more calories than walking without poles, and works your core muscles. Most importantly, Urban Pole Walking is fun! In addition to the excellent workout Urban Poling provides, participating in these

June 2019 groups also offers you the opportunity to make new social connections and safely enjoy the great outdoors. Walking groups are currently active in the following locations:

1. Ryde Community Co-Op, 1624 Barkway Rd, Gravenhurst – Fridays until June 28th from 9:30 to 10:30 am 2. Hannah Park, 40 Bailey St, Port Carling – Mondays until Jun 24th from 1:30- to 2:30 pm (except Victoria Day) 3. Ullswater Community Hall, 1503 Old Parry Sound Rd, Utterson – Tuesdays until June 25th from 9:30 to 10:30 am (part of the K.I.S.T. exercise program)

Smartphone Photography

During the winter and spring months of 2019, WISE Community Connect participants in Ryde, Milford Bay, Dwight and Port Carling learned the basics of smartphone photography. The classes offered information on what a smartphone camera can do as well as some tips and tricks for capturing wonderful photos.

The participants learned how to change the exposure of a shot. This allowed them to change the mood of the image. Deliberately under-exposing the image resulted in a darker and moodier photo. Another topic was how to use the shutter feature on a smartphone’s camera and how this can convey a sense of motion in a shot. Using the shutter function also helps capture hard to shoot subjects like animals or young children, as they typically are never still for more than a fleeting second. Participants were also encouraged to test out different filters which change an image through the alteration of shades, colours and pixels in various manners.

The results have been a success, many participants have employed some of the information they learned and put it towards creating unique photographs.

Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon 2019

On Friday, May 3, 2019, we celebrated Seniors Programs and Services volunteers “Under the Big Top” for all of their contributions to our programs and our communities across Muskoka. The smell of popcorn lingered in the air, wafting down the hall as people began to arrive. Fun carnival music played as they entered the tent and grabbed a ticket before finding their seats. Each table featured a small stage animal and fun activity before the show was to start. People got in line for the rides as the event moved into lunch. Lunch menu item were named after carnival rides such as; “tilt a whirl” chicken cacciatore and “the scrambler” vegetable enchiladas. The room filled with conversations as different community volunteers mingled, sharing stories and experiences. The big top alighted with laughter as Mr. John Parks, Comedy and Juggling Show, provided us entertainment for the afternoon. He engaged the audience as he started the show with a variety of juggling acts. We were amazed by his ability to ride his unicycles. Captivating and dazzling the audience, he spun 9 plates at once while a volunteer attendee acted as his assistant. All of us were on the edge of our seats, encouraging him not to let one drop. Laughter and applause roared through the room through his entire

Page 12

June 2019 performance. We encouraged volunteers to capture their day and memories at our “Under the Big Top” Photo booth before the day concluded.

Of course, our team had to capture this fantastic fun-filled day. Seniors Programs and Services truly appreciate each of our volunteers. Their dedication to our programs never goes unrecognized. We have a variety of volunteer positions to match everyone’s passion and commitment. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please visit our website at www.seniorsinmuskoka.ca for further details, including role descriptions and the application form or call 705-645-2100 ext. 4199 or send an email to [email protected].

Portobello Mushroom Burger for One

With the push to include more plant-based products in our diets and the increasing popularity of vegan recipes, it is important to remember that BBQ season is not just for meaty steaks and burgers anymore. Introducing the Portobello mushroom burger! With a meaty-like texture and the availability of burger sized servings, the Portobello mushroom lends itself as a tasty alternative to the traditional beef patty. This versatile recipe can be altered to suit any taste or dietary restriction with different toppings.

Portobello Mushroom Burger for One

Ingredients for Single Burger

1 large Portobello mushroom 1 Kaiser Bun* 4 Tbsp. BBQ sauce 1 tsp white wine vinegar (or white vinegar) 1 tsp pepper 1 clove of garlic minced ½ tsp steak seasoning (optional) 2 Tbsp. olive oil (can be substituted with vegetable oil)

*Kaisers are often sold individually in the bakery department of most grocery stores

Instructions

Clean mushroom by removing stem from the main part of the mushroom so that the Portobello resembles the same shape as a burger patty. Gently wash the mushroom cap with water and let dry on a paper towel. Combine BBQ sauce, vinegar, pepper, minced garlic and oil in a container or med to large zip lock bag. Once mushroom is dry, place it in the container or bag with the marinade and leave for a minimum of 30 minutes (ideally having it rest with most of the marinade penetrating the gill side of the mushroom). Grill mushroom on the BBQ or grill in a pan or skillet on medium to high heat until mushroom gets a good browning and it is tender but not mushy (5-7 minutes for each side). You can use the remaining sauce to brush onto the mushroom as it cooks. Serve with desired toppings on a lightly toasted bun and enjoy! Topping Possibilities Swiss cheese slice Soft Goat Cheese Arugula Lettuce Grilled or sautéed red pepper Garlic Aioli Sauce Mayonnaise Onion Tomato Pickles
