The LORD’s are the earth and its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it. For he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD? Or who may stand in his holy place? One whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean, who desires not what is vain. He shall receive a blessing from the LORD, a reward from God his savior. Such is the race that seeks him, that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.

Reflection Questions for the Readings for November 1, 2020 The second reading from St. John tells us, “Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed.” What do you think God’s dream is for your life? On this feast of All Saints’ Day, how have you been inspired by the lives and example of the saints? How do you strive to embrace the Beatitudes in your life of faith? Which beatitude is the most difficult for you to live ouy? Which is the easiest?

3 4 LETTER FROM THE PASTOR As we celebrate All Saints Day I would like to take the opportunity to look at how one becomes a saint. We heard the basic requirements for sainthood last weekend, when Jesus told us that the greatest of all commandments is to Love the Lord your God with your whole heart, mind and and to love your neighbor as yourself. In a life of outstanding love one begins the road to sainthood but to be formally declared a saint requires a bit more. It is a four step process. At least five years after a person’s death (unless a special exception is made by the pope), a formal request is made for sainthood. Those making the request are usually from the candidate’s church, organization, or reli- gious community. They submit their request to the bishop of the diocese where the person died. The request tells how the person lived a life of holiness and lists reasons for considering the candidate for sainthood. If the bishop believes there is enough evidence to consider the person for sainthood, he asks the Vatican for permis- sion to open a special tribunal. Witnesses are then called to attest to the candidate’s goodness, holiness, devo- tion to God, and other virtues. If a person passes this step, he or she is named a “Servant of God.” The bishop sends a formal report and request to Rome where it is reviewed by the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints. Nine theologians read the material and determine whether there is enough cause to pass it to the entire Congregation. If so, the candidate’s writings and other aspects of his or her life are studied to make sure there is nothing that goes against the teachings and practices of the Church. As part of this investigation a per- son called a “devil’s advocate” raises questions and objections to the candidate’s sainthood. This is to make sure the final decision is complete and fair, and all evidence of the candidate’s saintliness is assured. Once a candi- date has been determined to be virtuous and heroic in his or her faith, he or she is declared “Venerable.” The next step is beatification. If the candidate was a martyr, someone who died for their faith, he or she may be beatified and named “Blessed.” Otherwise, a miracle brought about by the intercession of the saint must occur and be verified by the Congregation. Once the person is beatified and named “Blessed,” he or she can be ven- erated, or officially honored, in his or her city, diocese, region, or religious community. After being beatified, another miracle is required for the person to be canonized and officially declared a saint. Once again, the miracle must have occurred as a result of the person’s intercession. The Prefect of the Congrega- tion then sends the cause for canonization to the pope who makes the final decision. Once a person is canonized, he or she is officially declared a “Saint.” The pope declares this in an official way at a special Mass in honor of the new saint. This process can be a very lengthy process, taking years and years. Saints we know come from all walks of life and vocations. In February, formally recognized a miracle attributed to the intercession of Carlo Acutis, a 15-year-old Italian teenager who the pope has said is a role model for young men and women today. This recognition makes Carlo Acutis a “Blessed” or beatified. Pope Francis calls him a role model because like many teenagers he was into video games, the internet and computers. He found the internet and computer to be a great way to share the love of God with other teenagers and in a special way his love of the Eucharist. I would also like to mention another recent beatification which occurred yesterday, October 31, of Fr. Michael J. McGivney. The founder of the Knights of Columbus, Father Michael J. McGivney was a central fig- ure in the growth of Catholicism in America, and he remains a model today. His example of charity, evangeliza- tion and empowerment of the laity continues to bear fruit and guide Knights of Columbus around the world. As we remember and call upon the saints let us remember our call to live as a saint by loving God and neighbor.
