Pascal Laugier De Meester Van New French New French Extremism Pascal Laugier • Geboren 16 oktober 1971 Cannes • Leerling van Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Silent Hill, Beauty and the Beast) • Bekendste werken zijn Saint Ange, Martyrs en The Tall Man.

THE ANXIETY OF ROSE DA SILVA IN SILENT HILL MOVIE: A PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH RESEARCH PAPER Submitted as a Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for Getting Bachelor Degree in English Department by: DWI PRASETYO A. 320 020 071 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT SCHOOL OF TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF SURAKARTA 2008 1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study One of the real problems in human’s daily life is anxiety. Anxiety can include many aspects of life such as social, economic, religious and cultural aspect. Everyone ever has anxiety in his life. Commonly people does not like problem because they tend to get pleasure in their life. When human gets problem in his life and cannot solve it, he tries as far as he can to avoid it. But human cannot escape from this problem. By avoiding it, human will get anxiety in his life. Problem cannot be avoided. Human must overcome it and handle his problem because it can reduce the anxiety. As one of the psychoanalytic principles, anxiety is part of psychology study. The foremost investigator of the psychoanalytic is Vienna neurologist and psychologist Sigmund Freud. Freud (in Feist, 1985: 25) theorized that the root of human problems was psychological, not physical. He divides the psyche into three parts: id, ego, and superego. In literature, human problem sometimes become the interesting things to explore. The problem is sometimes pictured by an author. The problem is then developed by an author to create a story of his own. An author blends it in a story that becomes one of work of arts.

  • Silent Hill Production Notes
SILENT HILL PRODUCTION NOTES A child’s mysterious ailment. A desperate mother. An eerie, deserted city shrouded in mist, plagued by secrets. The mysteries are only beginning to deepen. When young mother Rose (Radha Mitchell) -- desperate to find a cure for her daughter Sharon’s bizarre illness -- refuses to accept a medical recommendation of psychiatric institutionalization, she flees with Sharon and heads for SILENT HILL, the town that her daughter continuously names in her sleep. Although her husband Christopher (Sean Bean) adamantly opposes, Rose is convinced the mysterious town will hold all the answers. But as her car approaches the deserted city’s limits, a mysterious figure appears in the road, forcing Rose to swerve and crash. When she comes to, Sharon is gone, and suddenly Rose – accompanied by a determined police officer (Laurie Holden) from a nearby town -- is on a desperate quest in Silent Hill to find her child. It’s immediately clear that her destination – left alone since devastating coal fires ravaged Silent Hill -- is unlike any place she's ever been: smothered by fog, inhabited by a variety of strange, haunted beings, and periodically overcome by a living Darkness that literally transforms everything it touches. As Rose searches for her daughter, she begins to learn the history of Silent Hill – its violent, puritanical past and the origins of its accursed state -- and realizes that her daughter is just part of a larger, more terrifying destiny. Silent Hill stars Radha Mitchell (Melinda and Melinda, Finding Neverland, Man on Fire), Sean Bean (North Country, National Treasure, Lord of the Rings), Laurie Holden (Fantastic Four, The Majestic), Deborah Kara Unger (White Noise, The Game, Crash), Kim Coates (Assault on Precinct 13, Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down), Tanya Allen (Starhunter), with Alice Krige (Star Trek: First Contact, Reign of Fire) and Jodelle Ferland (Tideland).

"In Fear and Pain": Stardom and the Body in Two French Ghost Films Guy Austin, University of Sheffield, UK Theories of Stardom, Identification and Horror Stardom is often equated with fantasy; put at its simplest, stars "condense audience fantasies." (Crisp, 1993: 216) Stardom facilitates various forms of identification on the part of the movie-goer, including fantasies of being (like) a star. In Star Gazing, her study of how film fans relate to stardom, Jackie Stacey has observed that identification fantasies extend beyond the film-going experience to enter into everyday activities: hence they can be not just cinematic but "extra-cinematic." (Stacey, 1994: 171) In the relatively short history of star studies most emphasis has been usually placed on cinematic identification and particularly, via the psychoanalytical model of film spectatorship, on a pattern of identification which is at once idealising -- "stars become ideal selves for the audience" -- and sadistic: "The star is presented as an object for the spectator who views him or her voyeuristically." (McDonald, 1995: 87) Stars do not always, however, elicit sadistic pleasures -- they can also be the source of masochistic pleasures when the audience identifies with a star body in fear or pain. For if pain is precisely that experience which most separates individual human beings from each other -- "bringing about, even within a radius of several feet, this absolute split between one's sense of one's own reality and the reality of other persons" -- then cinema, and the identification processes it facilitates, offers a way of bridging the "absolute split" and allowing the experience to be, to some extent, shared (Scarry 1985: 4).

I argue that the visceral and affective cinematic embodiment of female pain plays a vital role in determining the political and ethical relationships of spectators to the images onscreen. Drawing on phenomenological theory, feminist ontology and ethics (primarily the work of Hélène Cixous), as well as the ethical philosophies of Gilles Deleuze and Jean-Luc Nancy, I establish the bio-political and ethical positions and responsibilities of spectators who encounter female suffering in film. In doing so, I highlight the ways in which adopting a phenomenological approach to theorizing and practicing spectatorial perception can open up new areas of ethical engagement with (and fields of vision within) controversial modes of filmmaking such as European New Extremism and body horror. I analyze how suffering female bodies embody contemporary corporeal, socio-political and ethical problematics in what I define as the “cinema of exposure.” I argue that through processes of psychosomatic disturbance, films within the cinema of exposure encourage spectators to employ a haptic, corporeally situated vision when watching women experience pain and trauma onscreen.
