Pedalare Sul Grande Delta Da Venezia a Ferrara
A Venetian June
A Venetian June by Anna Fuller A Venetian June I Venice "Si, Signore!" The gondola stirred gently, as with a long, quiet breath, and a moment later it had pushed its way out from among the thronging craft at the steps of the railway quay, and was gliding with its own leisurely motion across the sunlit expanse of the broad Canal. As the prow of the slender black bark entered a narrow side-canal and pursued its way between frowning walls and under low arched bridges,—as the deep resonant cry of the gondolier rang out, and an answer came like an echo from the hidden recesses of a mysterious watery crossway, the spirit of Venice drew near to the three travellers, in whose minds its strange and exquisite suggestion was received with varying susceptibility. To Pauline Beverly, sitting enthroned among the gondola cushions, this was the fulfilment of a dream, and she accepted it with unquestioning delight; her sister May, at the bar of whose youthful judgment each wonder of Europe was in turn a petitioner for approval, bestowed a far more critical attention upon the time-worn palaces and the darkly doubtful water at their base; while to Uncle Dan, sitting stiffly upright upon the little one-armed chair in front of them, Venice, though a regularly recurrent experience, was also a memory,—a memory fraught with some sort of emotion, if one might judge by the severe indifference which the old soldier brought to bear upon the situation. Colonel Steele was never effusive, yet a careful observer might have detected in his voice and manner, as he gave his orders to the gondolier, the peculiar cut-and-dried quality which he affected when he was afraid of being found out. -

AN EXCLUSIVE DESTINATION The Hotel Excelsior was built at the turn of the century, the realised VENICE LIDO desire of visionary entrepreneur Nicolo Spada and world-class architect Giovanni Sardi. It opened on July 21st 1908 to great acclaim, with a lavish oceanfront party for over 3,000 guests from around the globe. Its creators aimed to transform Venice Lido into a fashionable, glamorous destination for the discerning traveller both national and international, utilising its unique beach setting, ample space and breath-taking views to maximum effect. After 18 months of building work, their dream resort was complete: a grand, Belle Epoque style palazzo featuring elabora- te Moorish design elements, with manicured gardens, an immaculate sandy beach and endless rows of private cabanas on one side and the emerald waters of the Venice Lagoon to the other. The hotel quickly became a Lido landmark, the must visit destination for the rich, famous and often royal. Today, over a century since its glorious opening, this 5-star destination remains an idyllic retreat for those seeking hospitality, luxury and glamour rarely seen since the Golden Age. -
Are Four Centuries of Systemic Segregation Coming to an End?
EOTVOS LORAND UNIVERSITY European Master’s Degree in Human Rights and Democratization 2016/2017 Are Four Centuries of Systemic Segregation Coming to an End? A socio-historical analysis of custodial care with case studies on deinstitutionalisation of children with disabilities in Bulgaria and Serbia. Author: Lazar Stefanović Supervisor: prof. Dr. Katalin Tausz ABSTRACT This study encompasses the phenomenon of institutionalisation of persons with mental disabilities in a holistic manner, from its rise to the fall as the only mainstream form of care for this group. The phenomenon of the period of “great confinement” with regards to persons with mental disorders determined the later development of custodial care systems; hence my thesis examines wrongness of the inveteracy of punitive and control oriented care that was long taken for granted. The perception of mental disorders progressed significantly after the aforementioned period; still today we are able to detect worryingly outdated approaches to mental disability as well as some features of the custodial care that were present a few centuries ago. A significant breakthrough happened with introduction of somewhat vague concept of dignity that allowed theorists and lawmakers to further develop understanding of this concept and incorporate it in international legal instruments. The position of dignity is examined with regards to realization of the rights of persons with mental disabilities and understanding the importance of autonomy as a prerequisite for dignified life. Ultimately, deinstitutionalisation is a tool by which the society loosens the control established upon the persons with mental disorders a long time ago. The case studies focus on the processes of deinstitutionalisation of children with disabilities in Bulgaria and Serbia. -

Ride the Tide: This Summer, There Are Many Ways to Explore the Providence River
Ride the Tide: This summer, there are many ways to explore the Providence River Marcello; photo credit: Alison O’Donnell Providence is a hopping city — usually. We find ourselves a bit limited this summer, because COVID, but because Phase 2 reopened some businesses and parks in the state, we once again have recreation options on the water. In fact, more options than ever before! Matthew “Marcello” Haynes became a gondolier in 1999, something he’d always wanted to do. You’ve likely seen him rowing down the river at a WaterFire event. In 2007, he bought the company La Gondola. Right about that time, Tom McGinn bought the Providence River Boat Company. Then, in spring 2017, as Marcello describes it, “I, Tom and his partner, Kristin Stone, sat for a pint one night and decided we’d like to open a kayak company. So we’ve been contemporaries on the river for quite some time.” Together they started Providence Kayak, now in its fourth season. Venn diagram aside, whether you’re looking to ride the Providence River in a gondola, kayak or river boat, they’ve got ya covered. They started with a dozen kayaks and built up from there. Ever expanding to accommodate their customers, this year includes additional choices. “We have 17 kayaks on the water right now,” says Marcello, “and we’re working on getting a fleet of ‘pedal’ boats on the water, which hold up to four passengers. Instead of having a flywheel, they have propellers attached to each pedaling mechanism,” explains the former physics teacher.
