Registered Charity No: 1044581 Company Limited by Guarantee No: 3020605 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 - 15 LINDA THORNTON CENTRE DIRECTOR

As Centre Director I have many roles to play but perhaps the most important one is responsibility for the financial sustainability of the charity - making sure we generate enough revenue to meet our running costs. This includes generating income from our facilities with the building continuing to attract users new and old to hire our public rooms, rent our offices, use our coffee shop, attend our activities or as a venue for civil weddings. Income generation also comes in the form of grant funded projects to meet gaps in provision which means writing funding The Inner Courtyard applications to the Big Lottery, Local Authorities, Charitable Trusts, NHS commissioning bodies, central government and local grant funded bodies. If successful these grants are targeted towards certain groups of people who have been identified by government as needing support with targets, outputs, outcomes and timescales to meet. Of course in order to do all of the above you have to be ‘fit for purpose’ which involves making sure you have the correct policies and procedures, risk assessments, employment structures, licenses, booking systems, maintenance checks etc; etc. A wedding Reception All of the above relies on a team of people and I am sure Ros Taylor M.B.E. - Chair of Board of Trustees will agree with me when I say (and we hope you will agree) that we continue to provide a quality service thanks to the skills, experience and commitment of our Trustees, staff members and volunteers. As we move into our eighteenth year of operation with the knowledge that we have been successful with a new Big Lottery three year scheme entitled ‘The Courtyard Communities Together Project’ (which aims to value and promote the cultural diversity of the area), there is much work ahead. Big Lottery have also awarded us extra funding to look at our long term Children’s Christmas Party sustainability with which we aim to develop a business strategy that will allow the charity to continue to develop and provide a valuable facility for the people of Goole.

‘The Time of Your Life’ Fun Day ‘COMMUNITIES TOGETHER’

From October 2011 – September 2014 we were successful in securing annual contracts with Council to deliver this Scheme. With up to 5,000 migrants now living and working in Goole and surrounding area there was a real need to set up support to promote social inclusion and community cohesion as well as providing individual support for the many families who had come to this country little prepared for life in the U.K. We worked with a total of 24 different nationalities over the period. Partnership work was also key A Summer Party to its success and we linked in with a total of 52 organisations and services to get the best outcomes possible for the Scheme. Using The Courtyard as a community hub we held many events over the period including world food events, E.S.O.L. (English for speakers of other languages) classes, dance workshops, children’s parties, family events, international events and themed events around the different cultures. At the end of the Scheme we were given the opportunity to try out a toolkit called ‘Social Return on Investment’ . This toolkit produces a description of how a project creates value The Culture Cafe and a ratio that states how much social value in pounds sterling is created for every £1 invested. Although very much in its early stages of being developed, the social return for every £1 invested was £43.52. This was benchmarked against 30 other projects and assessed using the same methodology and came out as the highest level of social return on investment generated by a community focused project. Our recent news from Big Lottery means that we will be creating a new scheme in the near future to build on the success of this 3 year project.
