esidents of the R.M. of Odanah will soon see chang- Res to their water bills as Council was recently ap- proved by the Public Utilities Board to increase its water rates. Ratepayers can expect to see the largest increase on their quarterly service charge, going up almost 60 percent from $9.75 to $15.42. Water per 1,000 gallons changes at more than 30 percent from $7 to $10.41, while the minimum quarterly payment rises roughly 50 percent from $30.75 to $46.66. Th e R.M. receives its water from the Town of Minnedosa’s water treatment plant and the rate in- creases refl ect the changes in the water rates made by the Town of Minnedosa earlier this year. “We are two rate increases behind the town and it is important to catch up on that,” Reeve Jim Andersen said. “Th e RM cannot run for very long buying water at one price and selling it at another which is what we have done for the last year.” Another problem that the R.M. is facing is an aging water system. Th e increased rates will prepare to cover the cost of future upgrades to the system – almost 20 years old – as well as general maintenance costs. Th e largest thing that the R.M. deals with is ex- cess pressure due to the large gradient going downhill. Photo by Darryl Holyk To totally replace their pressure reducing chamber, it would cost roughly $50,000. “We know down the road (L-R) Ken Hambeigei, Chris Schmaus, Cst. Fred Creber June 22, 1923 – December 10, 2012 Frederick “Fred” William Creber, beloved husband of Irene Creber ³/LYLQJLQ\RXU (nee Green), passed away on Monday, December 10th, 2012 at the &RPPXQLW\´ Minnedosa Health Centre. Fred was born on June 22nd, 1923 to Th omas and Greta Creber Rick Taylor 867-7551 [email protected] (nee Lochhead) on the family farm SE 13-16-20, northeast of Newdale. Fred went to school in Newdale, completing grade 11. After working a winter in a wood pulp camp, he started farming in 1944. Fred and Irene were married on October 26th, 1949. Over the next 5 years Fred and Irene were blessed with 4 children: Carol, Brian, Gordon and Harold. In June 1957, they decided that the small house on the farm was getting too small and the family moved into the “Lavery house” in Newdale. Th us began the farming from town. Fred and Irene travelled all across Canada, as well as into the United States (most notably Hawaii) to attend numerous Square Dance Conventions. In 1978 Fred designed an addition to the house. Th e double garage with large offi ce above was designed so it would not look like an “add-on”. Fred made sure of this by carving a 3-D model in soap before sending the plans to be approved by an architect. Fred took up cross-country skiing in the 1990’s, and enjoyed that sport until he was in his 80’s.
