TOWN OF ACTON MUNICIPAL MONTHLY FEBRUARY 1, 2020 ACTON, MA TOWN MANAGER’S UPDATE Last month, United States Senator Ed Markey addressed more than 900 attendees at a Town Hall event in the RJ Grey Junior High School Auditorium alongside Congresswoman Lori Trahan, State Senator Jamie Eldridge, and State Representative Tami Gouveia. The delegation engaged the audience on Markey’s Green New Deal legislation and other environmental issues. Environmental sustainability and green energy efforts are values held Senator Ed Markey answering questions from the closely by the Town of Acton. Consisting of five members within the community with a passion for farming or agricultural-related activities, this commission will promote and develop resources within the community, and provide education on agricultural issues, among many other exciting responsibilities. We will ask about manifestations of “madness” – when it is clinical (psychiatric), preclinical, metaphorical, psychopolitical, related to an individual or shared “crisis of presence,” and the like. Madness circles around notions of mental illness, but is more capacious, as we will see. Permanent Bastedo members are lead singer and founding member Alex Watson with vocalists Sophia Toomey and Celia Chriette providing vocal harmonies and aural treats. "We work with a range of musicians depending on the project or occasion, but the guitar and 3 vocals is our main line up. Bastedo perform mainly original songs however in amongst their original work you will often hear a selection of carefully chosen covers. All are infused with Bastedo flavour. That is gorgeous 3 part harmonies and indominatable spirit. "It would be a shame not to take advantage of the massive catalogue of amazing and beautiful songs out there in the ether. We love singing and performing and more often than not, we include cover versions of songs we like and feel will inspire our audience and provide knowing reference points alongside our original material." PAUL YOUNG in the Middle of the 1980S, Paul Young Became One Of
PAUL YOUNG In the middle of the 1980s, Paul Young became one of the biggest pop stars in the world, creating a body of work that endures to this day. A blend of the old school and new school, he was the epitome of someone who had worked his way up from – quite literally – the factory floor to become a superstar, scoring number one singles on both sides of the Atlantic. When he broke through in 1983, his Anthony Price besuited look was one of two iconic pop images in the UK that year. The other was David Bowie, then under his serious moonlight. Paul Young was born in the rock’n’roll era and grew up during the beat boom. Born in Luton in January 1956, he took piano lessons, was a self- taught guitarist, and as a teenager, fell under the thrall of Island Records. Young loved Free and because of them, he began listening to things around the margins, things that they listened to. He wanted to play bass like Andy Fraser and sing like Paul Rodgers. “I was always drawn towards to blues and soul.” Young recalls. “Even though Free had had a hit with ‘All Right Now’, they were a blues band, they knew they needed a pop song, so they wrote a pop song, and it was a hit. But when you look at their other stuff, they went straight back to the blues.” In 1972, aged 16, Young took up a position at the Vauxhall manufacturing plant in Luton, serving an apprenticeship just like his father before him. -
Disability and Music
th nd 19 November to 22 December UKDHM 2018 will focus on Disability and Music. We want to explore the links between the experience of disablement in a world where the barriers faced by people with impairments can be overwhelming. Yet the creative impulse, urge for self expression and the need to connect to our fellow human beings often ‘trumps’ the oppression we as disabled people have faced, do face and will face in the future. Each culture and sub-culture creates identity and defines itself by its music. ‘Music is the language of the soul. To express ourselves we have to be vibrating, radiating human beings!’ Alasdair Fraser. Born in Salford in 1952, polio survivor Alan Holdsworth goes by the stage name ‘Johnny Crescendo’. His music addresses civil rights, disability pride and social injustices, making him a crucial voice of the movement and one of the best-loved performers on the disability arts circuit. In 1990 and 1992, Alan co- organised Block Telethon, a high-profile media and community campaign which culminated in the demise of the televised fundraiser. His albums included Easy Money, Pride and Not Dead Yet, all of which celebrate disabled identity and critique disabling barriers and attitudes.
