Give a brief summary of what you’ve been doing since McClure graduating from CDA. I was a McDermott Scholar at UT Dallas where I did research in Topete cognitive science, specifically the neurological mechanisms of child science learning. After graduating and getting married, I CLASS OF 2014 started the Master of Education program at SMU. TH COLLIN COUNTY 7 GRADE & HIGH SCHOOL I work at UT Dallas on a project called Polycraft World, one of UNIVERSITY OF AT DALLAS: the world’s most comprehensive Minecraft modifications. It BS, COGNITIVE SCIENCE teaches advanced polymer chemistry to students of all ages. SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY: In addition, I teach AP biology at a high school in Richardson, MASTER OF EDUCATION and I’m writing a book on women’s health. How has your education at CDA shaped the person you are today? At CDA, I heard the message about the importance of science for Christians. Drs. Bill & Janice Arion instilled the idea that science is the modern revelation of God. Science is the way God speaks to us about His world, how it works, and how He made it. I view science as something that is not against faith, but as something that works into a robust faith. Also, I remember our logic school debates where we argued both sides of an issue. Learning a variety of views gave me the ability to have compassion for people who think differently. I do my best to be understanding, and that has played a huge role in my character. All of this was critically important when I went to college. I was so ready for college to be anti-Christian, but I found that my peers were willing to talk about big ideas. They wanted to ask questions, but they also wanted to explain their point of view. I learned to listen in humility about how their faith and beliefs were formed.

How have you leaned on your faith to help you make difficult decisions? My faith has informed many of my decisions in relationships. Modern American culture has embraced a narrative that says you need to make choices that are healthy for you and choose your relationships based on what’s right for you, and you alone. Protecting your mental health is important, but I consider more than what’s going to make me feel good. Instead, I ask myself what step in this relationship is right, and what is best for the other person. God tells us a lot about how to love your neighbor, and I like to remember that when I make decisions about relationships.

How have you exercised servant-leadership in your life since graduating? Being willing to volunteer for opportunities God puts in front of me is how I have learned to be a servant-leader. I operate by the philosophy of looking for opportunities to raise my hand. People often think leadership is about telling other people what to do or being in charge and setting the vision. Really, leadership is just being the first person to take a step forward and leading by example even if you don’t know everything or

College isn’t the end. College is a place where you gather tools to place in your toolbox that you’ll use to build the Kingdom of God for the rest of your life, so think about where you can go to get the right tools. Have a long perspective.

I went to Texas A&M and earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Communication. The questions that motivated a lot CDA also taught me how to write and write well. I learned to view primarily with China. myself as needy before the Lord and not feel insecure about that.

Describe how your education at CDA shaped the person How have you exercised servant-leadership since you are today. graduating from CDA? Throughout my time at CDA, there was an emphasis that I’ve done this by letting go of the pressure to be the one who everything we were studying fell under the sovereignty of knows everything. In Washington, there’s a never-ending God and the influence of Christ. That seed shaped a holistic competition to be perceived as the expert or the one with the most understanding in my mind about creation. God as Creator connections. Something I constantly struggle with is letting

6 go of that perspective and choosing to look at my profession as an opportunity to serve people. Politics can be a flashy environment where people compete for Prior to heading off to college, I met with a few older guys to get influence and measure power through the number of interviews or followers you their wisdom. One of them picked up the Bible and said, “Of all the have. I strive to focus instead on being books you’ll read in college and the rest of your life, none will mean content as a servant of Christ and doing more to you than this one here.” How do I exalt Christ in my life? good work unto Him without pursuit of How do I cultivate a longing for the Lord? I can think of no better the spotlight. place to fall in love with Christ than through scripture. If we put our How did your education at CDA attention on the Word of God, it will capture our hearts and seep into prepare you to live faithfully in a our souls. Nothing is more important than loving the Lord rightly. world that doesn’t celebrate Jesus Christ? CDA taught me not to run away from culture when I find myself in an environment where Christ isn’t glorified or worshiped. It’s not threatening or a reason to disengage. CDA taught me to view ministry through the call to be an ambassador and to live in those places with boldness and with a sense of mission. It’s exciting to be a part of Christ’s redemptive work. It’s part of The Gospel narrative. Our story goes back to Abraham in the first pages of Genesis. The scriptural cannon is closed, but the redemptive work is ongoing. We’re in the world but not of the world. For a Christian who understands this tension, they see that all truth is God’s truth, and truth touches everything. I love the emphasis CDA has always put on studying creation through the lens of God as Creator, Sovereign Ruler, and Redeemer. Everything we do is touched by Christ and the gospel, thus the primary motivator giving me hope while being in a worldly atmosphere.

Is there anything you want to add about how your faith influences your life and or career? As the Lord continues to shape my life and conform me to Christ’s image, it becomes clearer to me that faith is the most precious thing in my life. If there’s anything I’d impart to young students, it’s this: There is nothing more valuable or precious than belonging to Jesus, being known by Him, and knowing Him.4

7 CORAM DEO ACADEMY FAMILY Belknaps

In 2013, Madeline began 5th grade at The Academy of Classical Christian Studies in Oklahoma City. This new school offered a classical, Christian education where students could develop a lifelong love of learning while growing to appreciate the true, the good, and the beautiful for the benefit of man, and the glory of Jesus Christ. Even after I completed my seminary degree, this process was a long Reverend Jordan’s family: wife, Vivien, daughter, Zoe, son, Rowan, and baby, one that challenged our family’s collective patience more than Billie, who arrived this year a few times. It involved a period of hospital chaplaincy, and an extended time of study in Wisconsin during the Spring of 2018. In all of this, our CDA Community was incredibly supportive. I was ordained a Priest in September of 2019 and serve part-time at Church of the Incarnation in Dallas. While serving in both roles is tiring at times, I also find that they complement each other greatly. I am a better Pastor because of my work at CDA, and I think I am a more faithful administrator and teacher because of my Pastoral ministry. Mr. Bill Rector, beloved former headmaster and math teacher extraordinaire, embodies the mission and vision of Coram Deo Academy. For almost 20 years, CDA graduates and families have been inspired by his enthusiasm for education and his constant commitment to the kingdom of God. Through these years, Mr. Rector joyfully served CDA in a variety of roles, from classroom teacher to headmaster. In each role, he has served his students with kindness, discipline, wisdom, and a most unique sense of humor. Mr. Rector saw in each student their full potential and insisted they share his vision.

Ms. Pitts’s divinely inspired prayers and sense of humor, as well as Mrs. Blair’s grace, compassion, and prayers created a calming yet light environment that helped me grow spiritually. Ms. Loe’s sense of humor helped plant seeds of joy while teaching me to communicate effectively. Coach Peter’s and Coach Gary’s intuitive, encouraging, and energetic coaching style helped me develop athletic skills and teamwork. Mrs. Spirit Henderson and Dr. Heitschmidt continually SIERRA SCRUGGS pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow in ways I never expected. Through them, God took a reserved, introverted child and inspired abilities in leadership that I will use for a lifetime. Becoming the mascot was a huge step out of my comfort zone. For someone who does not like to be noticed, standing in front of a crowd in a lion costume was definitely not something I had envisioned. However, the fact that my identity was “secret” allowed me to become comfortable with big gestures and acting goofy. I also learned how to run across a field without losing my head - literally. As the mascot, I learned to react spontaneously to whatever happened. I learned to lead through action, since being the mascot is quite movement oriented. In softball, I had already learned athletic skills through playing third base, but I learned to lead by taking action through pitching. When I suddenly had to step in for our pitcher, my experience with spontaneity as the mascot helped me accept the new role. Ultimately, God gave me the courage to step up to the plate to be the backup pitcher. My time as the mascot allowed me to experience leadership through joy. On the field, I witnessed the excitement of the kids as they gave high fives and hugs. Off the field, I delivered books to students during the book fair and saw their faces light up. One of my favorite parts of being the mascot was the unexpected experience of seeing the joy the lion brought to children. As the mascot, I grew in many ways. Numerous teachers, coaches, and administrators watered seeds along the way. I am grateful to all who encouraged and influenced me. As I leave CDA, I hope I emerge equipped to plant and water seeds for others for the Kingdom of God. Likewise, I look forward to interacting with new people who will sow seeds in me.
