When asked, "What do you think is the greatest achievement since you have been in the Cran- ford school system?" Mr. Best gave the following reply.
"Undoubtedly the most import- ant development in the Cranford schools during the past few years has been the organization of stu- dent government.
"It has been possible to develop DR. HOWARD R. BEST Supervising Principal personal initiative on the part of the student body; it has developed an understanding and appreciation of cooperative effort; it has in- creased respect for the rights of others and the minority. All this is basic for democratic living. Dem- ocratic living as a way of life, in turn, is the major objective of education.
"The scope for student govern- ment in Cranford schools is unlim- ited. The degree and rapidity with which this is attained will be de- pendent upon the ability of the stu- dent body to assume responsibility and to accept, understand, and appreciate the true values of co- operative living."

The Junior Class gave the annual Junior Subscription dance on January 17, 1941, which proved to be a social success. A new dance committee will be chosen for the "Soon to be Junior-Senior Prom." This year for the first time there have been no class dues and also for the first time the Juniors were allowed to participate in the Senior play.

With the same aim as usual, to serve the student body, the student Council accomplished a variety of tasks. The most publicized of these was the formation of a student court. Mr. Wilson had direct charge of this court which tried all student traffic offenders. The president of the council served as judge. Under the leadership of Mr. Doll several other rather unique activities were begun. A capable example was the school wide observance of American Education Week. One day of this week was set aside for student leadership in the class rooms. The boys and girls took charge while the teachers looked on. Revision of the constitution and by laws, to fit the needs of today and the conditions as they are now, was also undertaken. The basis for taxation of school enterprises was changed from a 10', gross tax to a 7', net tax. A committee was formed to work out a plan for a new hand book. The hand book is expected to be issued next fall. Another business adventure success- fully entered was the sale of high school pins. All money collected by the council was returned indirectly to the students in a form advantageous to everyone. For instance; this year all funds obtained by taxation or the sale of pins will go into the publication of the hand book and thereby lower the price to students.

Zest was added to the paper by such special features as "Korridor Kapers," Jeanne Toumier's column on amusing events, and "Pen Portraits" briefly outlining the lives of outstanding Seniors. Not satisfied with their supply of news, the staff created some themselves by running various contests. Various favorites as proved by these votes were Wendell Willkie, The Super Man, Bette Davis, Erroll Flynn and "Knute Rockne" the film. Because of their extreme popularity the famil'ar fun- making "Sadie and Emma" and "Nutty News" were retained. In this new form of bi-monthly newspaper, THE SPOTLIGHT as always, left the Columbia Scholastic Press Association convention with honors. This time it was awarded second class rating, or good.

One of the most intricate productions ever attempted by a senior class was very successfully presented this year, and fortunately for the very talented class of 1941 "Pride and Prejudice" is a play that supports many stars. Let us begin by mentioning Grace Rauch for her excellent and delight- ful portrayal of the difficult part of Mrs. Bennet. Equal praise must go to Howard Ranken as Mr. Bennet. Martha Ann Clement as Elizabeth, and Bob Winkel as Darcy proved themselves experts from the great refusal scene to the final clinch. No less can be said, however, of Jean Tournier as the lovely, modest Jane, and Harold Brod as Bingley. It is impossible to mention here all the fine qualities of the whole cast, but let us take for our finale, the laughing, dancing Mae Brown as Lydia. As Seniors, we are grateful to the Juniors for their assistance and particularly to Don Wallace who helped make the play such a success. During those long eight weeks of rehearsal, incidents cropped up that would have caused an ordinary director to throw up her hands in despair— but not Miss Mathews If it wasn't a blizzard one weekend, someone in the cast was sure to come down with the flu or the hives, the next. But with all obstacles eventually overcome, a great show was put on by a great gang of troupers. Miss Mathews deserves a big round of applause for so generously devoting her time to making our play a success.

The musical organizations this year have been working under a full program. The band in particular has been very active. Be- sides playing at most of the football and basketball games and several assemblies, this organization gave its annual concert early in February. For the first time in its history, the C. H. S. band went to the National Band Contest, one section of which was held in Atlantic City in May. Several instrumental groups and soloists from all three sections participated in the State Solo and Ensemble Contests held in Elizabeth. The chorus and orchestra as well as small

mm GIRLS' SPORTS Girls' Sports hit a new high this year. In September the girls were greeted with new bows and arrows to give interest to Physical Ed periods. Bull's-eyes were scarce but fun was plentiful. When the classes were forced indoors by cold weather, basketball, volleyball and an entirely new activity, modern dancing were taken up. Yes, the girls could be seen do- ing anything from walking on their hands to truckin' to the rhythm of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" or some other round. December brought the girls out for inter- team basketball practice. Soon after Christ- mas the tournament began. There was an elimination tournament followed by a con- solation tournament. The starting teams were captained by Betty Spitler, Jeanette Haddad, |ean Williams, Connie Klein, Marie Preuss and Jean Wesighan. Klein's team was victorious over Williams' in the final game for which they were proclaimed champions of the year The games were efficiently refereed by Lucille Nelson and Mary Relyea. Lucille passed the State Intra- mural Referee Test which was given at Col- umbia High School, East Orange, in March. The hockey schedule has not yet been completed as we go to press. The interclass teams will fight it out on the oval and may the best team win! The cheerleading squad of 1940-41 was sponsored by Miss Voorhees, our physical education teacher. The eight-inch blue and gold insignia which was donated by the Board of Education completed the girls' out- fits. This group has shown active interest in all the major activties on the sports cal- endar. According to custom, the graduating cheerleaders will be awarded letters. JIM AVERY, CLEVE MULDROW The 1940 football squad undertook a strenuous ten-game schedule this fall but, nevertheless, a record of five victories, one tie, and four setbacks. With ten lettermen returning from the '39 aggregation, including Jim Avery and Cleve Muldrow, who were elected co-captains, prospects for a successful season were bright. After a scoreless deadlock with East Orange, the Blue and Cold toppled Dover, Roselle, and Bernardsville. The Weekleymen stalled when they met powerful Rahway, and, in a hard fought battle, they dropped their first decision. The scrappy Cranfordites bowed by the slender margin of one point to undefeated Hillside and Orange and Bound Brook also eked out close victories. But Cranford bounced back from the throes of defeat to trounce Butler by four touchdowns, and they continued their winning ways on Thanksgiving Day by closing the pigskin campaign with a smashing win over Thomas Jefferson. Cranford led all other North Jersey Croup II elevens in the Colliton Ratings in total points but the Blue and Cold was denied any titular recognition because of their four losses.

Coach BERNARD CARNAVALE Co-Captains IAMES AVERY, JOE DUFF Managers THOMAS STEVENSON, RICHARD CLIDDEN The 1940-41 basketball team upheld the perennial court prestige of Cranford High by posting ten victories against eleven in tough competition and in retaining the North jersey Croup II sectional title. It took much diligent practice and able tutelage on the part of Coach Bernard Carnavale before the squad became a smooth-working, cohesive machine, but it was finally accomplished. The Blue and Cold cagers started slowly and won only five of their first fourteen games. But when the valiant CHS courtsters scored a handy triumph over Plainfield they shed their losing habits and suddenly got "hot." Infused with an indomitable winning spirit, the team flashed scintillating form in trouncing a vaunted Regional High aggregation in a hectic "suddent death" overtime session, the first and only triumph CHS has ever scored over an Orange and Black outfit. This victory served as a further tonic to the boys and they completed the regular campaign with another overtime win over Roselle Park. The Blue and Cold was eliminated in the initial round of the County Tournament by a much taller Thomas Jefferson five. In the State Tourney the CHS quintet successfully defended its North Jersey Group II sectional crown by downing Roselle Park and Dunellen, finally losing out to Pompton Lakes in the semi-finals. Prospects for a good season were bright as seven lettermen and a band of hopeful aspirants reported to coach Jack Migliore for "Spring training" in the balmy atmosphere of Nomahegan Park. Coach Migliore has carded a sixteen game slate for the 1941 campaign, including tussles with such out- standing nines as Irvington High, Greater Newark Tournament Champions last year, Hillside, and Bound Brook. If the squad will "knuckle" down to hard work and capitalize on its potentialities a successful campaign is assured. Coach Migliore, having lost Dalessandris and Satter, last year's ace hurlers, will depend on Ed. Hitchcock. Malcolm Douglas, and Hal Noelker to share the pitching burden. Catching the hurler's slants will be big Bruce Bell. Bob Jacobus, a converted second baseman, a la Joe Cordon, will cover the initial sack. Captain Joe Duff and Bob Laurion. at second and short respectively, form an able keystone combination. Agile Don Wehrenberg has shaped up as a comer at the hot corner. Patrolling the outfield will be Jack Enright, Palmer Schroder, and Lou Dalessandris.

Coach J. Seth Weekley's cindermen started off their season creditably by taking a second place in the Penn Relays while fifth place was the best they could do in the stiff Long Branch Relays. With the relays out of the way the silksters are preparing assiduously in an effort to emulate the feats of last year's paladins, victors in all seven of their dual meets. Coach Weekley looks for a good team performance from his squad, paced by Captain Tom Albans, Jess Muldrow, Richie Vaiconis, Sid Scott, and Charley Patterson, besides many other promising prospects. Albans, fleet senior, will compete in the 220 and the 440 events in which he placed consistently last year. Muldrow will hurl the javelin while Scott will again toss the discus. Big Patterson will pull in his share of points with the shotput. Although these holdovers present the nucleus of a powerful squad, the field is wide open, especially so in the distance running events.

The 1941 hockey team takes its place among the outstanding Cranford puck-chasing outfits. The squad flashed consistently good form in scoring 7 victories in 10 matches. After but a few days of practice this years' sextet clashed with the powerful Peddie School prepsters in their initial game, los- ing the encounter by five goals. Coach J. Walter Coffee's charges hit their true stride after this opening loss and posted five straight triumphs in decisive style, before they were stopped by a tough Lawrenceville crew, one of the strongest prep-school aggregations in the state. After scoring a handy win over Rahway, the Blue and Cold squad closed their campaign by dropping a four-goal decision to a classy Morristown Prep six. Captain Scoville Hager led his mates through this highly successful season, preeminent in that the squad won all six of their tussles in high school competition, losing the other three to highly touted prep schools, and outscoring their opponents 28-17.
