Proxi Configuration Quick Guide to correctly set up Proxi files for vehicles with the Florence electronic architecture February 2010 Training Documentation for Maserati Service Network Quick guide for Proxi configuration Proxi Configuration What is Proxi? Proxi can best be described as the “DNA” of the vehicle. It is a file which contains information on how a vehicle is configured and is specific for each different vehicle. The Proxi defines the actual content of the vehicle. The idea for Proxi originated in the Fiat Group with the goal to allow one single, configurable electronic vehicle architecture to be used for different vehicles with different equipment levels and specifications. The Proxi file is stored inside the vehicle and is vital for the different electric and electronic vehicle functions to operate properly. Which cars use Proxi? Proxi is used on all vehicles which use the Florence electronic vehicle architecture, more specifically: • All Quattroporte vehicles (M139) • All GranTurismo vehicles (M145) • All GranCabrio vehicles (M145) • All Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and 8C Spider vehicles (AR920) Where is the Proxi file stored? The Proxi file is stored in the vehicle inside the Body Computer (NBC). The reason for this is that the Body Computer is the heart of the Florence system and also the vehicle network manager. By containing the Proxi file, the Body Computer becomes the “brains” of the vehicle. Can a Proxi file get lost or erased? No. The Proxi file is stored inside an EEPROM of the NBC. It does not get lost if for example the vehicle’s battery earth or the NBC gets disconnected. What happens if a car contains a wrong Proxi file? With a “wrong” Proxi file we intend a Proxi configuration which does not match the actual content of the vehicle. This will lead to one or more of the vehicle’s electronic functions not working correctly. Symptoms of this can be: error messages displayed on the instrument cluster or a blinking odometer (see later on). Maserati Academy 2 Quick guide for Proxi configuration When do I need to load a (new) Proxi file in a vehicle? It is necessary to modify the Proxi configuration in case modifications which affect the operation of certain electronic systems are made to the vehicle. For example: if front parking sensors are installed aftermarket on a GranTurismo or on a Quattroporte MY09 with rear parking sensors only, it is necessary to set up the Proxi configuration for front parking sensors as well. A Proxi file for a certain vehicle can only be configured by the Maserati factory, so the dealership must make a request to the factory for a new Proxi in such a case. How do I request a new Proxi file? A Proxi file can be requested through the Maserati Service Department by means of a simple on-line request procedure. A formulary is available on Modis to this end and this can be found in the After Sales section. Once the form has been completed and submitted, the user will shortly after receive a confirmation by e-mail (or otherwise, if the request has been rejected for some reason, he will be informed about this). Once the confirmation received, the new Proxi configuration is immediately available on the Maserati Diagnosi support server and can be uploaded in the vehicle. Note: see Technical Information Bulletin No. 200921 from the Maserati Service Department for all details regarding the on-line request of a Proxi file. How do I load a Proxi file into the vehicle? Loading a Proxi file in a vehicle is very simple. All you need is to have is your Maserati Diagnosi tool connected to the vehicle and an internet connection. • Connect Maserati Diagnosi to the EOBD-socket on the Body Computer and establish communication with the vehicle. • Make sure your Maserati Diagnosi tool is connected on-line. Both a LAN or a wireless connection can be used. Maserati Diagnosi will automatically connect to the Maserati Diagnosi support server. • Select the Body Computer (NBC) in the ECU selection menu of Maserati Diagnosi and make connection with it. Then select for “Proxi” in the programming environment. Follow the different steps indicated on the screen. The complete procedure takes a few minutes. Note: If the uploading of the Proxi-file into the vehicle has not been correctly completed for some reason (for example: in case the internet connection has dropped out), the procedure can be repeated from the beginning. Maserati Academy 3 Quick guide for Proxi configuration Can I use a Proxi file from one car for another car as well? No. Every Proxi file is specific for each vehicle. It contains specific data for one car and cannot be applied on other cars. Further, the Proxi upload procedure with Maserati Diagnosi is VIN-specific. Maserati Diagnosi will automatically search for the correct Proxi file on the server after having recognised the vehicle’s VIN. Therefore it is not possible to upload a Proxi file which is intended for a different vehicle. Important note: not only the Proxi configuration, but also the NBC as a component is specific for each vehicle. The NBC contains the VIN of the vehicle which is encrypted inside. It is therefore not allowed to swap the NBC between different vehicles. What is a Proxi alignment? The Proxi alignment is a simple procedure with the diagnostic tester (Maserati Diagnosi or SD3). It will align the Proxi configuration data between a number of ECU’s in the vehicle which, apart from the NBC, also need to contain the Proxi data for their correct operation. These “Proxed” ECU’s are the following: NQS, NIT, NCL, NIM, NS P, NAB (for the GranCabrio model only). When do I need to perform a Proxi alignment? The Proxi alignment procedure with the diagnostic tester (SD3 or Maserati Diagnosi) needs to be performed in the following cases: • After one of the “Proxed” ECU’s of the vehicle has been replaced (NQS, NIT, NCL, NIM, NS P, NAB for GranCabrio) • After the configuration of the vehicle has been changed and a new (= re-configured) Proxi file has been uploaded in the NBC. Note: unlike for the Proxi programming procedure, the Proxi alignment procedure does not require to have Maserati Diagnosi connected on-line. Maserati Academy 4 Quick guide for Proxi configuration Must I re-load the Proxi in the vehicle in case the NBC has been replaced? No. When for a specific vehicle a new Body Computer is ordered from the Maserati Parts Department, it already contains the correct Proxi configuration. Why is the odometer on the instrument cluster blinking at Key-On? Every time the ignition key is switched to On, the NBC performs a configuration check of the vehicle. If this check fails, the NBC alarms the user by sending a command for odometer blinking to the instrument cluster (NQS). This basically means that the vehicle configuration as stored inside the NBC (Proxi) does not match the actual content of the vehicle as recognised by the NBC. The following causes can be identified: • One of the ECU’s is not present in the vehicle. • One of the ECU’s is disconnected. • A wiring problem is creating communication problems with one of the ECU’s • An ECU has been replaced with one of different specifications (example: a NIT Magneti Marelli of hardware version 7.0 has been mistakenly replaced by a NIT Magneti Marelli of hardware version 8.0). • One of the “Proxed” ECU’s has been replaced and the Proxi alignment procedure has not been performed afterwards. • An incorrectly configured Proxi file has been uploaded in the NBC. Maserati Academy 5 Quick guide for Proxi configuration List with Proxi configuration options (updated 02 /2010) 003 – Set up parking sensor Applied vehicles: Quattroporte up to MY08 included. This Proxi configuration is required if rear parking sensors only, or both rear and front parking sensors are installed. In case the vehicle is already factory fitted with rear parking sensors and front parking sensors are added, it is not necessary to modify the configuration. 004 – Set up telephone Applied vehicles: Quattroporte up to MY08 included (NIT Blaupunkt /Bosch). This proxi configuration is required if the (optional) mobile phone is added on Quattroporte vehicles with a Blaupunkt/Bosch NIT. It is necessary to install the GSM box and antenna in the vehicle. 005 – Set up for Canada Market (opposing to function #031) Applied vehicles: Quattroporte up to MY08 included. Proxi set up to convert a USA specification vehicle in to a Canada specification vehicle. Note: apart from the Proxi configuration, it is also necessary to replace various vehicle components (instrument cluster, airbag system components, etc.). 006 – Set up anti theft system for Belgium market (opposing to function #007) Applied vehicles: Quattroporte and GranTurismo all vehicles. Due to specific functionality of the alarm system for the Belgian market, it is necessary to apply this Proxi configuration when a Europe specification vehicle is to be sold in Belgium. Note that this modification involves Proxi programming only. It is not necessary to replace or modify any alarm system components. 007 – Set up anti theft system for Europe market (opposing to function #006) Applied vehicles: Quattroporte and GranTurismo all vehicles. This set up will cancel set up #006. If a vehicle which was originally destined for the Belgian market is to be sold elsewhere in Europe, it is necessary to modify the Proxi configuration in order to cancel the Belgium-specific alarm system functionality.
