Editors' Introduction Editors’ Introduction This is the ninth issue of Tolkien Studies, the first refereed journal solely devoted to the scholarly study of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. As editors, our goal is to publish excellent scholarship on Tolkien as well as to gather useful research information, reviews, notes, documents, and bibliographical material. All articles have been subject to anonymous, external review in ad- dition to receiving a positive judgment by the Editors. In the cases of articles by individuals associated with the journal in any way, each ar- ticle had to receive at least two positive evaluations from two different outside reviewers. Reviewer comments were anonymously conveyed to the authors of the articles. The Editors agreed to be bound by the recommendations of the outside referees. Although they are solicited and edited by the editors, book reviews represent the judgments of the individual reviewers, not Tolkien Studies. With this issue Tolkien Studies bids farewell to Douglas A. Anderson, one of the founding editors of the journal. Since 2001 Doug has been co-editor of Tolkien Studies, taking special responsibility for Book Re- views and Book Notes, but keeping his keen eye on every aspect of the journal, making innumerable corrections and additions from his vast knowledge of Tolkien and his works, and employing his sound schol- arly judgment on matters great and small. He will be missed, and we wish him well with all his future endeavors, including his own publish- ing imprint, Nodens Books. Starting with our next issue (Tolkien Studies X), David Bratman will be Book Review editor and co-editor of Tolkien Studies, and Merlin DeTardo will be taking over the annual Year’s Work in Tolkien Studies. Michael D. C. Drout Verlyn Flieger Notes on Submissions Tolkien Studies seeks works of scholarly quality and depth. Substan- tial essays and shorter, “Notes and Documents” pieces are both wel- come. Submissions should be double-spaced throughout and use par- enthetical citations in the (Author page) form. A Works Cited page should conform to the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th ed. All citations to Tolkien’s works should follow the “Conventions and Abbreviations” of Tolkien Studies. Self-addressed, stamped envelopes should accompany all corre- spondence unless the author wishes to communicate via email and v In Memoriam Kathleen E. Dubs (1944 - 2011) was a member of the humani- ties faculty at Pázmány Péter Catholic University, and a member of the Hungarian Tolkien Society. Her courses included medieval litera- ture and Old and Middle English, and her lectures on Tolkien revived interest in him in academic circles. She contributed the entry on For- tune and Fate to the J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia, and with Janka Kas- cáková edited the collection Middle-earth and Beyond: Essays on the World of J.R.R. Tolkien, reviewed in this volume of Tolkien Studies. Conventions and Abbreviations Because there are so many editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, citations will be by book and chapter as well as by page-number (referenced to the editions listed below). Thus a citation from The Fellowship of the Ring, book two, chapter four, page 318 is written (FR, II, iv, 318). References to the Appendices of The Lord of the Rings are abbreviated by Appendix, Section and subsection. Thus subsection iii of section I of Appendix A is written (RK, Appendix A, I, iii, 321). The “Silmarillion” indicates the body of stories and poems developed over many years by Tolkien; The Silmarillion indicates the volume first published in 1977. Tolkien wrote to his son Christopher describing a literary quandary in relation to two different emotions: one that moves me supremely and I find small difficulty in evoking: the heart-racking sense of the vanished past (best expressed by Gandalf’s words about the Palantir); and the other the more ‘ordinary’ emotion, triumph, pathos, trag- edy of the characters. That I am learning to do, as I get to know my people, but it is not really so near my heart, and is forced on me by the fundamental literary dilemma. A story must be told or there’ll be no story, yet it is the un- told stories that are most moving. I think you are moved by Celebrimbor because it conveys a sudden sense of endless un- told stories: mountains seen far away, never to be climbed, distant trees (like Niggle’s) never to be approached—or if so only to become ‘near trees’ (unless in Paradise or N’s Parish). (Letters 110) The paradox of the untold story, and Tolkien’s efforts to resolve it, play a pivotal role not just in The Lord of the Rings, but throughout his entire legendarium. Vladimir Brljak has recently championed the importance of this letter, asserting that “how to tell the untold … was Tolkien’s fundamental literary dilemma,” and arguing that Tolkien’s so- lution is found in the “metafictional ‘machinery’” of his stories—the mediating conceit that the tales are derived from layered translations and redactions of wholly vanished source texts—which allows for their “telling and untelling…in the same breath” (19). In spite of the impor- tance of this framework, the heart of Tolkien’s solution is found in the stories themselves, in the narrative device which grants what Tolkien called “unexplained vistas.” With a nod to the letter, I would call this device the “untold tale,” and count among its ranks the gaps, enigmas, allusions, ellipses, and 1 Peter Grybauskas loose ends that pepper Tolkien’s narratives. In his analysis of the centrality of this correspondence, Brljak overlooks the two examples given to help illustrate the “heart-racking sense” of untold stories— ”Gandalf’s words about the Palantir” and the name “Celebrimbor.” These references offer a clue to Tolkien’s solution; indeed they are themselves instances of it.

Powell Title: Tolkien‟s The Silmarillion: A Reexamination of Providence Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Dr. Thomas Martin Degree Master of Arts Year 2009 Christian providence in the primary (real) world operates as the model for the spiritual movement of Eru/Illuvatar in Tolkien‟s secondary (imaginative) world. Paralleling the Christian God, Illuvatar maintains a relationship with his creation through a three-fold activity: preservation, concurrence, and government. Preservation affirms Eru‟s sovereignty as Creator, and concurrence guarantees creaturely freedom, while paradoxically, government controls, guides, and determines those wills in Time. The union of these three activities comprises the providential relationship of Illuvatar in Tolkien‟s imaginary world. The following thesis endeavors to carry the argument for providence into The Silmarillion with a declarative and analytical detail that distinguishes Illuvatar‟s providence from other temporal manifestations. Many aspects of Tolkien’s world have been analyzed and discussed, but it remains a relevant topic for both specific questions concerning Tolkien’s world and general questions concerning worldbuilding in literature. Sub-creating Arda , edited by Dimitra Fimi and Thomas Honegger, makes a valuable contribution that expands on both theoretical areas, applies theories of worldbuilding to Middle-earth, and draws interesting parallels to other fictional worlds. Because the field of worldbuilding is incredibly rich, Sub-creating Arda is not exhaustive, but nevertheless makes significant contributions to contemporary academic problematizations of the field and will undoubtedly inspire new arguments and new approaches within the field of worldbuilding. He lived up under Hill, where the Withywindle ran from a grassy well down into the dingle. Old Tom in summertime walked about the meadows gathering the buttercups, running after shadows, tickling the bumblebees that buzzed among the flowers, sitting by the waterside for hours upon hours. There his beard dangled long down into the water: up came Goldberry, the River-woman's daughter; pulled Tom's hanging hair. In he went a-wallowing under the water-lilies, bubbling and a-swallowing. 'Hey, Tom Bombadil! Whither are you going?' said fair Goldberry. 'Bubbles you are blowing, frightening the finny fish and the brown water- rat, startling the dabchicks, and drowning your feather-hat!' 'You bring it back again, there's a pretty maiden!' said Tom Bombadil. 'I do not care for wading. Go down! Sleep again where the pools are shady far below willow-roots, little water-lady!' Back to her mother's house in the deepest hollow swam young Goldberry. But Tom, he would not follow; on knotted willow-roots he sat in sunny weather, drying his yellow boots and his draggled feather. Guests of Honor Author Guest of Honor: Ursula Vernon Winner of the 2013 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature for Digger. Ursula Vernon is the author and illustrator of the Dragonbreath series, Nurk: The Strange, Surprising Adventures of a (Somewhat) Brave Shrew, and Digger, winner of the 2013 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award, a first for a graphic novel. 1 The daughter of an artist, Ursula spent her youth attempting to rebel and become a scientist, but eventually succumbed to the siren song of paint (although not before getting a degree in anthropology, because life isn't complete without student loans, right?). Her work has been nominated for an Eisner award, "Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition" and a number of Webcomics Choice Awards. Digger, in addition to winning the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature in 2013, won the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story in 2012. Ursula grew up in Oregon and Arizona, went to college at Macalester College in Minnesota, and stayed there for ten years, until she finally learned to drive in deep snow and was obligated to leave the state.

    CTS Termcard: Easter 2014 For the Enemy is upon us… I’ve already said thanks to various people, but I’ll say them here again: last term was an excellent success, with a well-attended AGM (and a contested election!), a well-organised annual dinner, and Minas Tirith’s third Varsity Quiz win on the trot. Jamie, Mark, and my fellow quiz team members deserve particular thanks, so here they are! It is, alas, now exam term once more, and the dread hand of the Proctors reaches out to us all… yet, people of the City, hope is not lost. For, standing alone in the mist, the White Tower will keep having meetings as a bastion of safety in an ever-fearsome world. I’ve taken care to write this very much as an exam term timetable; you’ll note that more or less from week 5 through to 8 we’re pretty much just going for solid frivolities to keep the terror of exams away, whereas the discussions have coalesced earlier in the term. April 23: Of Ships and Seafarers The seas of Middle-Earth are a vital theme running through Tolkien’s legendarium; the Elves are drawn to them, the Orcs repulsed from them, the humans fascinated by them. In this meeting expect discussion of Earendil’s voyage, Fastitocalon, the Numenorean, Gondorian, and Elven navies, and of course Umbar and its dreaded corsairs! (“You are without a doubt the worst Dark Lord I’ve ever heard of.” “Ah. But you have heard of me…”) Time: 19:15 Place: N1A, Pembroke College April 30: Discovery and Destruction In this discussion we’ll look at Tolkien the environmentalist; what does science mean in Tolkien’s world, and should we be as quick as Tolkien himself is to reject the mechanisation that Saruman and Sauron are associated with? Is there significance in the fact that the two most relevant of the Valar are literally an old married couple? Expect all this, plus trees.

    13 Reflections on Tolkien’s Use of Beowulf Arne Zettersten University of Copenhagen Beowulf, the famous Anglo-Saxon heroic poem, and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Author of the Century”, 1 have been thor- oughly analysed and compared by a variety of scholars.2 It seems most appropriate to discuss similar aspects of The Lord of the Rings in a Festschrift presented to Nils-Lennart Johannesson with a view to his own commentaries on the language of Tolkien’s fiction. The immediate pur- pose of this article is not to present a problem-solving essay but instead to explain how close I was to Tolkien’s own research and his activities in Oxford during the last thirteen years of his life. As the article unfolds, we realise more and more that Beowulf meant a great deal to Tolkien, cul- minating in Christopher Tolkien’s unexpected edition of the translation of Beowulf, completed by J.R.R. Tolkien as early as 1926. Beowulf has always been respected in its position as the oldest Germanic heroic poem.3 I myself accept the conclusion that the poem came into existence around 720–730 A.D. in spite of the fact that there is still considerable debate over the dating. The only preserved copy (British Library MS. Cotton Vitellius A.15) was most probably com- pleted at the beginning of the eleventh century. 1 See Shippey, J.R.R.
