KIA KAHA NBRFC BEER PONG TOURNAMENT Saturday 20 May saw the 2nd annual beer pong tournament played in the Club. After the success of the inaugural event last year, the number of entries grew to 32 pairs and a great night was had by all competitors and spectators alike. The winners of this years tournament were Kirby Johnston & Patrick Smith The Management Committee wish to extend our thanks to Tony Christie and Scott Davidson who did a magnificient job running the event. On a sad note …... Unfortunately this year’s beer pong event will be the last held by the Club. Unfortunately the Club was the subject of a complaint from an unknown individual to the CCC Alcohol Licencing section with the claim that we were allowing members to bring their own alcohol and that is was being held in our changing rooms. Clearly these statements were incorrect, but the bottom line is that because this event is seen to be potentially encouraging excessive drinking, it is not permitted within the constraints of our bar licence. Despite the fact the event was well managed, and there were no incidents, we have to accept this position and not risk the chance of losing our licence. We will therefore have to consider a substitute event next season as this type of event is great for the camaraderie of our members. Darts is a distinct possibility, but if you have any other ideas, please give them to a Management Committee member. Still lead on the field by captain Dougie Stewart and the returning Div 2 stalwarts there has been a pleasing mix of younger players come into the team. Due to work commitments, Peter McLaren had to withdraw as coach, and Denis Cations has stepped up alongside Steve Crotty, and new addition Luke Crotty. A few losses in the early rounds has put the pressure on to the team, however they are playing more consistent rugby and are still in with a shot of the top eight. SPONSORS “THE RISiNG TIDE” JUNIOR SECTION UPDATE We have over 200 registered players in 15 teams. Great selection of coaches from players from Div 2 and 3 to parents who have never played before. Our most senior team is the Under 13, coached by Josh Pitcher and Chris Boyce. For most of this team it will be their last year before moving on to High School teams. Two weeks ago we had our Junior Club day. All our Juniors played in great spirits on a freezing, windy day in front of a proud club. It was great to have Division One players come down to help all of the teams. Which is a tradition our junior’s really enjoy and appreciate. Some of the Juniors showed this appreciation by appearing in a guard of honour for the Seniors later that day. The committee ran a sausage sizzle so all players including their opponents got a sausage and a drink. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my hard working committee. There are many hours behind the scenes involved the smooth running of the Junior section. 2017 Junior Committee Michael Woodrow – Junior Club Captain Summa Atkinson – Deputy Junior Club Captain Secretary - Claire Coetzee Brenda Nottingham – Treasurer Wade de Garnham, Sarah Fuller, Dave Gentry, Cara Stewart, Shaun Reynolds, Brett Stanley, Louise Wedlake, Greg Nicholls, Riki Bolton. World Rugby U20 Championship: The story so far World Rugby U20 Championship : The story so far We take a stroll down memory lane to look back at the 12 previous editions of the World Rugby U20 Championship. Now in its 13th year, the World Rugby U20 Championship has unearthed countless stars of the future and matches that have lived long in the memory. From Rugby World Cup winners such as All Blacks forward Sam Whitelock and Springboks’ fly-half Handré Pollard – the top points scorer in the RWC 2019 final – to current England captain Owen Farrell, age-grade international rugby’s premier event has provided the perfect stage to introduce exciting young talent. No less than 707 players have experienced playing at the U20 Championship before going on to be capped by their countries – enough to highlight its role in the player development pathway. Traditionally New Zealand have been the dominant force in the competition, capturing the title a record six times, with England the next-best on three. However, in recent times it is France who have emerged from the shadows. Les Bleuets won their inaugural title on home soil in 2018 before becoming the third team, after New Zealand and England, to successfully defend their crown in Argentina 12 months later with a thrilling 24-23 victory over Oceania U20 champions Australia.
