    Radical Islamic Movements: Gender Construction in Jamaat-i-Islami and Tabligh-i- Jamaat in Pakistan Tahmina Rashid Abstract Muslim women are generally viewed as victims of prevailing religious and patriarchal discourses. Their subjectivity and subordinate position is discussed as imposed, through textual representations by orthodox and radical Muslims. Radical Islamic movements are examined as militarized masculinities, oppressing women as well as terrorizing the non-Muslims. This paper argues that women are active partners of their subordination within traditionalist and radical religious movements. They are agents of orthodoxy and have carved a new role for themselves within the religious paradigms. They not only conform to the radical world view but are instrumental in dissemination of radicalism amongst fellow women and create an environment that fosters the extremists’ agendas. Since the terrorist attacks in 2001, dominant discourses have put militant Islam at the centre stage for debates surrounding Muslim world, Islam and Muslims—largely representing them as homogenous groups, sharing militant ideologies. This synonymous usage of Islam / radicalism / militancy/ terrorism has put moderate and progressive elements in a fix, as new forms of (group) identity are being imposed on Muslims. Women on the other hand are stereotypically represented as oppressed domesticated subjects and followers of patriarchal norms. Their role in various traditional Islamic organizations is generally overlooked as the dominant discourses focus on radical elements and women are seen as mere victims of religious traditions.     FIQH OF FASTING A brief introduction to rules of Fasting by Imam Muhammad Shoyaib Nurgat Notes Fast of the month of Ramadhan are Fardh O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become righteous. (Baqarah: 183) “So those of you who witness the month must fast in it.” (Baqarah:185) Virtues of Fasting in the blessed month of Ramadhan. Said: In Paradise there is a gate which is called Rayyan, through ﷺ Sahl bin Sa'ad reported that Rasullulah which only the people who fast would enter on the Day on Resurrection. No one else would enter along with them. It would be announced: Where are the people who fast that they should be admitted into it? And when the last of them would enter, it would be closed, and no one would enter it. (Muslim) Said that Allah Almighty says: The Fast is for Me and I will give the ﷺ Abu Huraira narrated that Rasullulah reward for it, as he leaves his sexual desire, food and drink for My Sake. Fasting is a shield (from Hellfire) and there are two pleasures for a fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord. And the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better in Allah's Sight than the smell of musk." Clark All Rights Reserved Abstract Dīn and Duniyā: Debating Sufism, Saint Shrines, and Money in the Lucknow Area Quinn A. Clark This dissertation asks how Muslims in north India today understand four paradoxical aspects of Sufi saint shrine traditions. The shrines of Sufi saints are sometimes regarded as apolitical, sacred, all-inclusive, and anti-elite religious spaces. At the same time, they are sites that are politicized, illegally bought and sold as commercial real estate, fuel for Islamic sectarian divisions, and often controlled by upper-caste Muslim elites. Based on the analysis of historical archival materials and twelve months of ethnographic fieldwork in Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), this dissertation argues that shrines are sites that straddle the dīn-duniyā distinction in Islam. Dīn (understood as “religion” in the modern period) is the atemporal, immaterial domain of true spirituality, whereas duniyā (“world”) is the realm of this-worldly material concerns and temporal impermanence. As sites imbued with the ethereal barakah (love of God manifest as the power of a blessing) of Sufi saints that aid individuals in drawing near to God by transcending “worldly” desires and also material commodities that are aggressively competed over by adversarial stakeholders (e.g., the state, real estate mafias, sectarian rivals), these shrines are paradoxically both of dīn and of duniyā.

  • Female Islamic Education Movements
    Female Islamic Education Movements Since the 1970s, movements aimed at giving Muslim women access to the serious study of Islamic texts have emerged across the world. In this book, Masooda Bano argues that the creative spirit that marked the rise and consolidation of Islam, whereby Islam inspired serious intellectual engagement to create optimal societal institutions, can be found within these education movements. Drawing on rich ethnographic material from Pakistan, northern Nigeria and Syria, Bano questions the restricted notion of agency associated with these movements, exploring the educa- tional networks which have attracted educated, professional and cultur- ally progressive Muslim women to textual study, thus helping to reverse the most damaging legacy of colonial rule in Muslim societies: the isolation of modern and Islamic knowledge. With its comparative approach, this book will appeal to those studying and researching the role of women across Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, as well as the wider Muslim world. Masooda Bano is Associate Professor at the Oxford Department of International Development, and Senior Golding Fellow at Brasenose College, University of Oxford. This volume has been compiled by the Islamic Bulletin www.islamicbulletin.com into two separate books. Volume 1,2, 3 and the second volume 4,5,6, 7. It describes the Five Pillars of Islam and also highlights more obscure principles. For years it has remained a favorite with the people of the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent. Among (Hanafi Deobandi) Muslims, it is a popular practice to present this volume to a new bride. The motivation behind this gesture is that the young woman is taking up a new identity and new life as a wife and mother-to-be. She should be well versed in the rites, rituals and tradition of Islam. On hearing that voice, the cloud moved and poured heavily on a stony place. All the water collected in a drain and began to flow. This person began following the water and saw that a man was standing in his orchard and was sprinkling water with a spade. This person asked the gardener: "O servant of Allâh! What is your name?" He gave the same name which this person had heard in the cloud.

Analyses in both contexts have sought to determine the causes of radicalization. The evidence indicates with almost uniform consistently that religion is at the heart of the issue. However, that alone has been of little help in comprehending the phenomenon as a whole in Pakistan’s context, largely because only a handful of studies have endeavored to analyze historical, political and psychological aspects vis-à-vis radicalization in Pakistani society. Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS) launched a program in 2008 to fill that void by focusing exclusively on research aimed at a greater understanding of the phenomenon and related aspects. PIPS has produced 24 research studies, both empirical and theoretical, since the launch of the program.

He was born at Thana Bhawan (UP), India and lived during the second half of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century. This period was a period of turmoil for the Muslims of India as they had been reduced from the ruling class to the subject class with the fall of the Muslim rule due to the occupation of India by the British. The Mutiny of 1857 spelled devastation for the Muslim upper classes which included the landlords and the petty rulers. The structure of the society had crumbled and the centuries old religious and social traditions and customs were being challenged. Muslims were dumb founded as to what catastrophe had befallen them. With the fall of the Mughal rule in 1857 they were left headless and directionless. They could not look forward for any or for any guidance. It is in this scenario that the thesis begins. The current thesis comprises of seven chapters including the conclusions. The first chapter, which forms the introductory part, is a detailed description of the social and religious condition of Indian Muslims in the nineteenth century and so it is entitled.
