Eric Coates: You’re too young to remember the events of 1964. When did this episode of history grab your attention?

Sean Devine: Soon after 9/11, I started researching the role of political consultants and advisers. I guess I’m less curious about the Leader than I am about who’s whispering into the ear of the Leader. From there I learned about famed 1960s communications consultant Tony Schwartz, one of the characters of this play, and his role in the infamous “Daisy Girl” ad. I was quickly hooked.

But I didn’t write Daisy as history. My concerns are absolutely current, i.e. “those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.” There are parallels between the mid-to-late 1960s and our current times. The rise of militarism and political extremism, the counter-culture revolution against it, the heavy-fisted state response to the counter-culture. Sound familiar?

Lyndon B. Johnson’s legacy is rife with contradictions. He championed civil rights, but pushed a foreign policy that is a preview of Donald Trump in terms of protec- tionism and outright thuggery. How do your views of his presidency influence this script?

There are certain themes that repeatedly find their way into my narratives. Betrayal, in its various forms, is one of them. How our institutions betray our trust, and how our own ideals are betrayed by our ambition, ego, greed, etc. Lyndon Johnson was sadly guilty of both of those charges. In Daisy, we see a nation betrayed by a president who sold himself as a peacemaker. And we see an idealist betrayed by personal ambition. For me, the play becomes a tragedy, and speaks to my concern that many of our ideals – social, political, personal – are seeing their currency devalued to a dangerous extent.

Tell me about your research process. How successful were you in tracking down people who were directly or indirectly involved in this story? Did their input trigger any notable shifts in your approach or in the content of the play?

I love research. I spend way too much time on it, that’s for sure. For Daisy, I met the real-life Tony Schwartz just before he died, and still correspond with members of his family. I met the real-life Sid Myers, another character in the play. I sat in the office of advertising legend Bill Bernbach, another character. I have stuff in my basement that should be in a museum, including an audio tape of the “Daisy Girl” ad. But only a fraction of what I learn ends up in the play. Most of it helps me build closer relationships to the characters, and the story, and the truth behind the story.

GCTC 2019–20 SEASON | DAISY 1 One trap that comes from doing research via the real people being dramatized is that I soon discover their own biases. They have blind spots, which is perfectly understandable. They want their life story told in a certain way, because that’s how they see it, even when objectivity proves otherwise. So, I’ve had occasions when I’ve presented information to these real people that changes their view of how they’ve understood key parts of their lives.

GCTC’s mandate asks us to “...provoke examination of Canadian life and our place in the world.” Were you surprised that I included a play about American politics, set in 1964, in our season?

No, because I think Daisy has a very strong resonance here in Canada, and right now. And I’ve been grateful that GCTC sees this. Yes, the play is set in a previous generation, but the questions it asks about the erosion of political discourse and the impact that media has on our elections is just as relevant today. And as for the Canada / U.S. comparison, over the past few years most have seen that we are not far off from our American neighbours when it comes to exploring the depths of political ugliness.

What’s your favorite ad or ad campaign of all time? Why?

Well, of course I love the “Daisy Girl” ad. But there’s one ad from the same LBJ 1964 campaign, that was made by the same people who made “Daisy”, that I’m quite particular to. It’s called “Confessions of a Republican”. It’s an amazing piece of stream-of-consciousness writing, and a remarkable performance. I’m also a fan of the ad because I managed to track down the actor who did it and have lunch with him in NYC. Google the ad and watch it! You’ll be amazed by how closely a 1964 Republican voter’s concerns about Republican candidate Barry Goldwater feels eerily similar to how contemporary Republican voters might feel about Trump.

ERIC COATES – DIRECTOR

Eric Coates is the Artistic Director of Great Canadian Theatre Company. For GCTC he most recently appeared in Bang Bang and directed Lo (or Dear Mr. Wells). Also for GCTC he directed 1979, in co-production with the Shaw Festival, Gracie, Ordinary Days, Butcher, Generous, Best Brothers, This is War, and The Boy in the Moon. He was the Artistic Director of the Blyth Festival for ten seasons, from 2003 through 2012. Directing credits include numerous productions with the Blyth Festival and projects with Theatre Calgary, Drayton Entertainment, Thousand Islands Playhouse, Lighthouse Festival and CBC Radio. As an actor he has worked in theatre, television and film since 1986, including four seasons with the Stratford Festival and productions in regional theatres in Ontario, Atlantic Canada and New York. Eric served as the President of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) for six years. He is a proud member of the Samish Indian Nation.

SEAN DEVINE – PLAYWRIGHT

Sean Devine’s day-to-day experience spans the performing arts, public sector arts funding, politics, community leadership, and a huge family. A native of Montreal, Sean moved to Ottawa in 2014 after spending a decade in . While in BC, Sean co-founded Horseshoes & Hand Grenades Theatre before bringing the company to Ottawa and stepping down in 2018. As an actor, one of his favorite theatre roles was in GCTC’s recent production of Butcher. Daisy premiered in Seattle in 2015, has since played in Houston and New York City, and will play in Los Angeles this May. His more recent play When There’s Nothing Left to Burn won the University of Lethbridge’s national playwriting competition, and premiered at the university in 2018. Sean is the president of the Trend Arlington Community Association, which has kept him extremely busy, especially after his community got struck by a tornado in 2018. Sean ran for political office in the 2015 federal election as the NDP candidate for Nepean, where he lives with his amazing wife Alexa and their four kids. Sean wants to send a huge thank you to Eric Coates for his friendship and support on this play.

Vanessa Imeson is an award winning Theatre Artist holding a combined BA Honours degree in Dramatic Art and English from the University of Windsor, MFA in Theatre Design from the University of and diploma for Makeup Design for Film and Television from Vancouver Film School. She designs costumes, make-up, wigs and puppets for a variety of collegiate programs and professional theatre companies across Canada while simultaneously acting as Head of Wardrobe for the GCTC. Vanessa is also a Core Artist and resident Designer with Ottawa’s original Shakespeare in the park troupe a Company of Fools.

VENESSA LACHANCE – SOUND DESIGNER

Venessa Lachance hails from a small French community in Northern Ontario and launched her musical career in Ottawa. Since her arrival in the capital, the young composer worked as the Music Director for several theatre productions. Among these are Lo (Or Dear Mr Wells) (GCTC, 2019), Turcaret, or The Financier (Odyssey Theatre, 2014), Prosodie in Le promenoir (NAC’s Théâtre français, 2014), La fille d’argile and Le long de la principale (Théâtre la Catapulte, 2014 & 2016), and On verra (Théâtre du Trillium, 2016). Venessa composed for Théâtre Tremplin for 6 years. She was nominated for a Rideau

8 GCTC 2019–20 SEASON | DAISY Award in 2015 in the Emerging Artist of the Year category. In 2014, she released her first album consisting of solo piano compositions. Venessa’s classical background and her interest in using music as a story-telling device can be heard throughout the narrative-like short pieces on the album. It’s to this recording that Venessa owes her Trille Or Award nomination in the Discovery of the Year category (2015).

BRAD LONG – SID MYERS

Brad Long is an Ottawa based theatre artist. Recent credits include Coach of the Year, Building the Wall, BURNT (undercurrents, 2017) The December Man (NAC, Assistant Director) Re:Union at the Magnetic North Theatre Festival, The End of Civilization (Gladstone Theatre), This is War (GCTC), WE GLOW (Prix Rideau Award for Outstanding Male Performance, Outstanding New Creation, 2013), Mark Antony in Ottawa Shakespeare Co.’s Julius Caesar, MSND and Othello at the St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival, Dreams of Whales with New Theatre of Ottawa, and The Fan with Odyssey Theatre. He is the Co-Artistic Director of Horseshoes and Hand Grenades Theatre and Artistic Associate at Theatre 4.669.

PETER SPIKE LYNE – LIGHTING DESIGNER

Spike is a Metis Lighting Designer originally from Montreal and is Technical Director for the newly launched Indigenous Theatre Department at the National Arts Centre here in Ottawa. Previous selected credits in Montreal include Triplex Nervosa, Motherhouse, God of Carnage and With Bated Breath for Centaur Theatre, and Secret Annex, Forever Plaid, Educating Rita and My Old Lady for Segal Centre Theatre. He was also Production Manager for Comedian Russell Peters. He was lighting designer for last year’s production of Behaviour here at GCTC.

MICHAEL MANCINI – TONY SCHWARTZ

Michael is atingle to be back at GCTC in this wonderful play. For GCTC, Michael was last seen playing George in The Secret Mask. Also for the GCTC: The Optimists, The Last Liberal, Mambo Italiano, and Wit. For the Ottawa Shakespeare Company, he played Hamlet in Hamlet, and Cassius in Julius Caesar. For Third Wall Theatre Company: Touchstone in As You Like It, the title role in Henry V, and Mephistopheles in Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus. For the National Arts Centre, Twelfth Night. Film and television credits include: Bobby in the upcoming Canadian feature film The Office Games, and Chad Horford in two episodes on the hit TV series The Bold Type. Other film and TV credits include: Separated At Birth, St-Nickel, Eyewitness, Tell the World, After the

GEOFF MCBRIDE – AARON EHRLICH

Geoff is an Ottawa based performer who previously appeared at GCTC last season in Lo (or Dear Mr. Wells) and prior to that Goodnight Desdemona, (Good Morning Juliet) in 2013. He is thrilled to finally be appearing in a GCTC play without brackets in the title. He has played in the parks for nine seasons with a Company of Fools, including last year’s Romeo + Juliet. He occasionally works with his friend Karen Balcome at THUNK!theatre. They have produced several interactive shows, most recently: The Game of a Life at subDevision. Currently he and Margo MacDonald are creating The Persistent Stain, a play that is allowing them to live their punk rock dreams.

ANDREW MOODIE – CLIFFORD LEWIS

Multiple award winning actor/playwright/director Andrew Moodie has performed in countless productions all across the country. Some selected credits include: Better Living, Second Sheppard’s Play, Our Country’s Good (Great Canadian Theatre Company), Macbeth (Stratford), Satchmo Suite (Eastern Front), Hamlet (Soulpepper), Othello (Shakespeare in the Rough), The Importance of Being Earnest, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Stuff Happens, Thirsty (National Arts Centre), Romeo and Juliet (Globe Theatre), Playwrighting credits include: The Real McCoy, (Factory Theatre, GCTC 2007, 2008). Toronto the Good, (Factory Theatre 2009,Dora Award nomination). Winner of the WGC award for writing for Afghanada. His other screenwriting credits include Drop tha Beat (CBC) and A Winter’s Tale (Caribbean Tales) For many years he was the host of TV Ontario’s Big Ideas, and he has appeared in many film and television productions, including:How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, Away From Her and Total Recall.

PAUL RAINVILLE – BILL BERNBACH

“It’s just great to be back on the GCTC stage.” Longtime subscribers will remember Paul from his work here over four decades. Paul played: Angus in The Drawer Boy and Dr. Janusz Korczak in Hannah Moscovitch’s acclaimed play The Child Republic. He was the wacky psychiatrist Stan in The Burden of Self Awareness, and Ernie, the dad suffering from aphasia inThe Secret Mask. These are just a few of the many productions Paul got to take part

10 GCTC 2019–20 SEASON | DAISY in over the years at GCTC. He has also worked in theatres across the country and across town at the National Arts Centre, La Vieille 17, and The Gladstone. In May 2019 Paul launched a CD of original tunes produced by the remarkable Ian Tamblyn and featuring acclaimed local musicians: Rebecca Campbell, Petr Cancura, James Stephens, Ken Kanwisher and Olivier Fairfield. The music is available on CD and online through streaming platforms.

ROGER SCHULTZ – SET & PROPS DESIGNER

Roger is very grateful to return to GCTC having previously designed their productions of Gracie, How Black Mothers Say I Love You, Janet Wilson Meets the Queen, Butcher, and The Best Brothers. As a designer and educator, Roger has worked extensively throughout Canada for many companies including: The National Arts Centre - English Theatre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Curtain Razors, The Globe Theatre, Theatre Network, Mayfield Dinner Theatre, Keyano Theatre and Prairie Theatre Exchange.
