Abstracts of the Scientific Program Abstracts of the Scientific Program Joint Meeting of Association of Field Ornithologists (AFO) and Wilson Ornithological Society (WOS) October 27 to 30, 2019 Cape May, NJ Monday morning plenary address: Wilson Ornithological Society Margaret Morse Nice Lecture Dr. Robert Curry, Villanova University Transformation of familiar birds into model organisms: what chickadees can teach us. Much like the Song Sparrows that captivated Margaret Morse Nice, chickadees are charismatic backyard birds that we easily take for granted. Research concerning several North American chickadee species has burgeoned in recent decades, yielding insights about fundamental problems in ornithology –– approaching what we have learned from their European relatives. The role of vocal behavior in chickadee mating systems has been examined thoroughly. "Our" chickadees are currently central among studies of social networks using technological tools that allow us to track movements and associations in space and time. Chickadees have contributed important insights concerning cognitive ecology and neuroethology. Long-term research within the northward-moving hybrid zone between Black-capped and Carolina Chickadees combines many of these elements, while also employing genomic approaches and Citizen Science data; this work has revealed influences of ongoing climate change and behavioral mechanisms on the dynamics of songbird hybridization. There is still much to learn from these familiar birds. Tuesday morning plenary address: Association of Field Ornithologists Dr. Christina Riehl, Princeton University Cooperative breeding in the Neotropics: important lessons from obscure players. The study of cooperative breeding in birds has a long history in the New World tropics, beginning with Alexander Skutch's seminal observations of helpers at the nest. Recent studies of Neotropical birds have revealed a diversity of cooperative systems, ranging from small family groups to complex societies composed of relatives and immigrants. This talk will briefly review recent studies on these systems, which form our current understanding of the different evolutionary pathways leading to various forms of cooperative breeding. We'll then focus on the communally breeding cuckoos – the anis and their allies – which breed in social groups with several unrelated co- breeders. Although this breeding system is unusual among birds, the study of communal nesting can lend important insights into fundamental reproductive trade-offs in birds. Data from a long-term field project on Greater Anis in Panama has shed light on the selective pressures favoring (and constraining) sociality, including effects of group size on reproductive fitness, mating and parental care patterns, and alternative strategies such as conspecific brood parasitism. Tidal marsh bird behavioral plasticity in response to nest flooding events. As anthropogenic stressors threaten species with extinction, phenotypic plasticity and natural selection are two potential mechanisms for species persistence. Specialist species are especially vulnerable during times of environmental change, necessitating fine scale study of their potential to respond. We are studying behavioral plasticity of four sympatric tidal marsh bird species – Saltmarsh Sparrow Ammospiza caudacuta, Seaside Sparrow Ammospiza maritima, Clapper Rail Rallus crepitans, Willet Tringa semipalmata. These species nest near the ground in tidal marshes and are vulnerable to nest failure from high spring tides. Limited evidence suggests that Saltmarsh Sparrow chicks can climb up vegetation to avoid drowning and that Clapper Rails can manipulate nest structure during floods and retrieve eggs that have flooded out. To assess the frequency and conditions under which species engage in behaviors used to mitigate nest failure during flooding, we used infrared radiation cameras to film nests during nightly high tides occurring around the full and new moons. Preliminary data confirms existing literature on what behaviors each species employs and demonstrates that rails are most frequently at nests during flooding events, whereas adult Saltmarsh Sparrow, Seaside Sparrow, and Willets are largely absent. Chicks of both Saltmarsh Sparrows and Seaside Sparrows are able to climb once they reach a certain age. This ongoing project aims to determine how much flexibility there is in the frequency and conditions under which individuals employ behaviors to combat failure from nest flooding, in order to improve the understanding of each species’ status in the face of sea-level rise. Eye size predicts light microenvironment use, foraging niche, and sensitivity to habitat disturbance of Neotropical cloud forest birds. Eye size of terrestrial birds is often assumed to reflect interspecific variation in light microenvironment use and predicted to influence foraging behavior and sensitivity to habitat disturbance. However, no study has explicitly linked eye size to the actual light microenvironments used by wild birds. We hypothesized that eye size would predict (1) light intensity use, (2) foraging niche (stratum and maneuver), and (3) sensitivity to human-induced habitat modification. During 2016 – 2019 we placed light sensors on 15 species of cloud forest birds in northern Peru (N = 72 individuals), measured the lateral eye width for 135 species, and conducted point count surveys across a gradient of agricultural land use. Foraging behavior and eye size (phylogenetically corrected for body mass) predicted most of the variation in light intensity use (F4,10 = 8.312, p = 0.003, R2 = 0.84). Understory species had the largest eyes and used the darkest environments (<2% of total available sunlight) compared to canopy species with smaller eyes that used brighter environments (20-30% total available sunlight). Across the bird community 38% of the variation in eye size was explained by foraging stratum and behavior, with far-sighted foragers (sally/pouncers) in the understory having the largest eyes and near-sighted foragers (pick/gleaners) in the canopy having the smallest eyes. Average eye size was marginally higher for species sensitive to the two most brightly lit habitats in our system: fencerows and pasture trees. GPS tracking and population genomics suggest itinerant breeding across drastically different habitats in the Phainopepla. Migratory birds generally divide the annual cycle between discrete breeding and non-breeding ranges. Itinerant breeders, however, reproduce twice at different geographic locations, migrating between them. This unusual flexibility in movement ecology and breeding biology suggests that some species can rapidly modulate the conflicting physiological and behavioral traits required for migration and reproduction. The Phainopepla (Phainopepla nitens), a songbird of the southwestern USA, has long been suspected to breed first in desert habitats in spring, then migrate to woodland habitats to breed again in summer. However, direct evaluation of movement and gene flow among individuals breeding in different locations has previously been logistically intractable. We deployed GPS tags on free-flying Phainopeplas in southern California, all of which migrated to woodland breeding habitats after desert breeding (an average distance of 232 km). GPS data also revealed previously unknown fall and spring stopover sites. Population genomic analyses revealed no genetic differentiation among desert and woodland breeding populations, indicating significant movement and gene flow across the region. Finally, we used random forest analyses to quantify substantial environmental differences among temporal stages. Our results provide direct evidence that individual Phainopeplas do indeed move between two drastically different breeding habitats in the same year, representing a rare and extreme example of life-history flexibility.     Assessing conservation status of resident and migrant birds on Hispaniola with mist-netting John D. Lloyd, Christopher C. Rimmer and Kent P. McFarland Vermont Center for Ecostudies, Norwich, VT, United States ABSTRACT We analyzed temporal trends in mist-net capture rates of resident (n D 8) and overwintering Nearctic-Neotropical migrant (n D 3) bird species at two sites in montane broadleaf forest of the Sierra de Bahoruco, Dominican Republic, with the goal of providing quantitative information on population trends that could inform conservation assessments. We conducted sampling at least once annually during the winter months of January–March from 1997 to 2010. We found evidence of declines in capture rates for three resident species, including one species endemic to Hispaniola. Capture rate of Rufous-throated Solitaire (Myadestes genibarbis) declined by 3.9% per year (95% CL D 0%, 7.3%), Green-tailed Ground-Tanager (Microligea palustris) by 6.8% (95% CL D 3.9%, 8.8%), and Greater Antillean Bullfinch (Loxigilla violacea) by 4.9% (95% CL D 0.9%, 9.2%). Two rare and threatened endemics, Hispaniolan Highland-Tanager (Xenoligea montana) and Western Chat-Tanager (Calyptophilus tertius), showed statistically significant declines, but we have low confidence in these findings because trends were driven by exceptionally high capture rates in 1997 and varied between sites. Analyses that excluded data from 1997 revealed no trend in capture rate over the course of the study. We found no evidence of temporal trends in capture rates for any other residents or Nearctic-Neotropical migrants. For sure, this was no ordinary Caribbean holiday! During the first couple of weeks we visited no fewer than ten islands (Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St Lucia, St Vincent, Barbados and Grenada), a logistical feat of some magnitude. With plenty of LIAT flights (the islanders refer to LIAT as ‘Leave Island any Time’ and ‘Luggage in Another Terminal’ to name but two of the many funny phrases coined from LIAT) and unreliable AVIS car hire reservations, we had our work cut out, but in the end, all worked out! It’s always strange birding on islands with so few targets, but with so many islands to pack-in, we were never really short of things to do. All of the endemics showed well and there were some cracking highlights, including the four smart endemic amazons, the rare Grenada Dove, the superb Lesser Antillean Barn Owl, the unique tremblers and White-breasted Thrashers, and a series of colourful endemic orioles to name just a few! At the end of the Lesser Antilles adventure we enjoyed a few days on Trinidad.

We recorded 50 species among 182 mist net captures, 79 point count detections, and 476 incidental observations. These included 12 North American migrants and 38 permanent resident species, includ- ing 14 Hispaniolan endemics. The two sites showed similar overall diversity and abundance of birds. We confirmed the continued presence of globally endangered Black-capped Petrel ( Pterodroma hasitata ), locating at least four vocalizing birds during nocturnal surveys of cliffs along the Pic La Visite escarpment. We also confirmed Bicknell’s Thrush ( Catharus bicknelli ) at both sites, capturing seven individuals, and we mist-netted the first Swainson’s War- bler ( Limnothlypis swainsonii ) recorded for La Visite. We observed extensive human impacts on habitat throughout La Visite National Park.

    Welcome to the Ornithological Congress of the Americas! Puerto Iguazú, Misiones, Argentina, from 8–11 August, 2017 Puerto Iguazú is located in the heart of the interior Atlantic Forest and is the portal to the Iguazú Falls, one of the world’s Seven Natural Wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area surrounding Puerto Iguazú, the province of Misiones and neighboring regions of Paraguay and Brazil offers many scenic attractions and natural areas such as Iguazú National Park, and provides unique opportunities for birdwatching. (Paul Smith) PARAGUAY 15 SEPTEMBER – 2 OCTOBER 2017 LEADER: PAUL SMITH With just short of 400 birds and 17 mammals Paraguay once again proved why it is South America’s fastest growing birding destination. The "Forgotten Heart of South America", may still be an “off the beaten track” destination that appeals mainly to adventurous birders, but thanks to some easy walking, stunning natural paradises and friendly, welcoming population, it is increasingly becoming a “must visit” country. And there is no wonder, with a consistent record for getting some of South America’s super megas such as Helmeted Woodpecker, White-winged Nightjar, Russet-winged Spadebill and Saffron-cowled Blackbird, it has much to offer the bird-orientated visitor. Paraguay squeezes four threatened ecosystems into its relatively manageable national territory and this, Birdquest’s fourth trip, visits all of them. As usual the trip gets off to flyer in the humid and dry Chaco; meanders through the rarely-visited Cerrado savannas; indulges in a new bird frenzy in the megadiverse Atlantic Forest; and signs off with a bang in the Mesopotamian flooded grasslands of southern Paraguay. Marsden2 Accepted: 28 March 2021 # The Author(s) 2021 Abstract While urbanisation remains a major threat to biodiversity, urban areas can sometimes play an important role in protecting threatened species, especially exploited taxa such as parrots. The Hispaniolan Parakeet Psittacara chloropterus has been extir- pated across much of Hispaniola, including from most protected areas, yet Santo Domingo (capital city of the Dominican Republic) has recently been found to support the island’s densest remaining population. In 2019, we used repeated transects and point-counts across 60 1 km2 squares of Santo Domingo to examine the distribution of parakeets, identify factors that might drive local presence and abundance, and investigate breeding ecology. Occupancy models indicate that parakeet presence was positively related to tree species richness across the city. N-Mixture models show parakeet encounter rates were correlated positively with species richness of trees and number of discrete ‘green’ patches (> 100 m2) within the survey squares. Hispaniolan Woodpecker Melanerpes striatus, the main tree-cavity-producing species on Hispaniola, occurs throughout the city, but few parakeet nests are known to involve the secondary use of its or other cavities in trees/palms. Most parakeet breeding (perhaps 50–100 pairs) appears to occur at two colonies in old buildings, and possibly only a small proportion of the city’s1500+ parakeets that occupy a single roost in street trees breed in any year.

    An Urban Bird Watcher’s Colonial City Bird Checklist and Historical Sites Guide, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Introduction Santo Domingo’s Colonial City (Ciudad Colonial in Spanish) was established in 1498 by Christopher Columbus, making it the first European settlement in the New World and the site of the first cathedral, hospital, customs house and university in the Americas. The city was laid out on a grid pattern that became the model for almost all town planners in the New World (UNESCO 2014). It is located along the western bank of the Ozama River and is about one square kilometer in size (see fold-out map). In 1990 the Colonial City was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), securing its status as a major tourist attraction in the Caribbean. In addition to its rich cultural heritage, remnant native vegetation and magnificent century-old trees abound. The Ozama River constitutes its eastern perimeter. Patches of coastal dry forest to the north and a traversing coastline to the south constitute its remaining borders. All of these natural attributes afford a rich diversity of life forms making the city an ecological “sink” and “micro-biodiversity hotspot” that hopefully will continue to be protected for another five centuries…and beyond!
