HAPPY youngsters at the Sri Lankan v Test match in Sri Lanka, hold aloft the Keswick Club flag that normally flies from the pole above KCC’s pavilion in Lower Fitz Park, Keswick. The strong links between Keswick and Sri Lanka were established through the fact that the club has had a professional, Geeth Kumara, from that sunblessed country for several years and that the summer of 2019 will be Geeth’s eighth season with KCC, the longest of any professional employed by the club. Geeth is the second Sri Lankan to play for Keswick, the other being spin bowler Dinuk Hettiarachchi. Stephen and Laura Johnson, of Laura in the Lakes, Keswick, who travelled to Sri Lanka, were flying the flag in Galle where the first Test was won by England. The couple had a fabulous time in the country. “It’s a fantastic place,” said Stephen, “absolutely beautiful. We were only out there for a week for the cricket but wished we could have stayed longer to see more of the island – perhaps next time.” Cricket as a sport is renowned for establishing friendships, not only between clubs who compete against each other in the UK in their various leagues, but also between individuals and nations. And Geeth Kumara will not be the only cricketer from foreign shores to visit Keswick and this summer because there will be no fewer than nine Sri Lankans playing as professionals at clubs in the Premier Division of the Cumbria Cricket League. Keith Richardson (Magazine Editor and KCC Publicity Officer and Groundsman).

WELCOME

Ideally placed in the middle of Keswick, The Bank Tavern offers a homely integrity during the winter months, and through summer, with the addition of a lively beer garden, an energetic character emerges. Traditional décor is an uncontrived reflection of The Bank Tavern’s history, as one of Keswick’s oldest hostelries.

THE BAR MENU

An unpretentious menu offers a wide range of traditional pub food. A distinction of presentation, service and quality makes many other bar meals appear average. Such distinction is emphasised by service ‘treats’ such as hot sizzlers on which the steaks are served. Food is served in impressive quantities, and cooked fresh on the premises. A friendly eating atmosphere is amenable to a relaxed family meal, or a formal outing. The mix of passing trade and loyal local custom is a testimony to The Bank Tavern’s healthy and effective diversity.

CASK ALES & FINE WINES

Having a range of eight cask ales from a friendly bar, offering a taste of Lakeland, the Bank Tavern is a charming location to enjoy a quiet meal or a drink.

APRIL: THE 2018 season began in dramatic fashion. Keswick 1st XI elected to bat first in the opening fixture at home to Haverigg and the team was soon in dire straits with the total on 5/3. The home side was eventually all out for a modest 132 from 47.3 overs with Sri Lankan professional Geeth Kumara top scoring on 37 and Andy Clark and Oscar Link making vital runs for the last wicket. But then the visitors were bowled out for 125, eight runs shy of a winning total as Kumara and James McGown each claimed four . Unfortunately, the good fortune did not extend to the second game of the season, at Furness, where Keswick Glen Weightman. were bowled out for 31. Unfortunately, the contents were spilled (and the wedding went ahead later in the summer!) GLEN Weightman was the star of the show as Keswick 1st XI successfully chased down a total of 202 at Fitz Park to defeat the old enemy, Cockermouth. Glen took 4/37 from 10 overs and then hit an unbeaten 57. James McGown was 36 not out. The pair put on 81 for the sixth wicket as the home side replied with 203/5. Karl Link hit an unbeaten 50 for Keswick CC 3rd XI in an EVCL Sunday League game against newcomers Dumfries. But the “agony bag blowers” (blame Edgar Appleby for that one) went on to win this crossBorder encounter. GEETH Kumara – who celebrated his 29th birthday on the eve of the match – made his first century of the new season with an unbeaten 114 not out at Dalton in Furness in the Premier Division of the North Lancashire and Cumbria Cricket League (N&CCL). Lancashire League club and Keswick were in the old and, quite literally, not in the same league. So this represented a big cup match and a giantkilling opportunity for Keswick against the mighty club. Keswick CC groundsman at that time, the late Brian Pattinson, or “Blott” as he was known, decided (more or less off his own bat) that Millom should always remember their visit to Keswick because he was determined (as a chef) that the occasion would be marked by the cricket tea to end all cricket teas. These were the days when players were asked to bring along ‘tea for two’. In his efforts to create a favourable impression Brian almost bankrupted KCC as he spent a small fortune out of club funds in order to produce a memorable feast. It became known as “Blott’s Banquet”. Unfortunately the game was rained off and the feast had to be put in storage until a rearranged midweek evening fixture when its grandeur and sense of occasion was lost, together with KCC’s cup campaign that season. OSCAR Link was 80 not out in a Keswick 2nd XI victory over Edenhall in the First Division of the EVCL at Fitz Park. The 2nd XI game coincided with the great success that was the ‘Proms in the Park’ event and which goes to show that classical music and cricket are essentially soul mates. After the music was over a merry band of ‘Promenaders’ (some merrier than others) joined forces with the cricket club for an impromptu party in the pavilion that also included, for some daft reason, a game of rounders (Men v Women) on the outfield as the sun finally went down on a brilliant Fitz Park day. GLEN Weightman hit a halfcentury but it could not prevent Keswick from losing at home to Furness. The game actually started at 10 am so that players and supporters could watch the England v Sweden World Cup quarterfinal game at 3pm. THE BRILLIANT weather and a belter of a batting track produced almost 600 runs (570 to be exact) in the 1st XI’s home game against Workington. Geeth Kumara top scored for Keswick with 91 as Keswick made 262/9 in reply to the visiting team’s total of 308/7. Steve Moss and Scott McGown featured in a 99 run partnership down the order for Keswick. KCC CLUB president and 3rd XI opening bat John Webster was 52 not out as Keswick 3rd XI came second in an EVCL Sunday League game at Lanercost Colts. KESWICK CC players hit centuries in county junior matches. KCC PUBLICITY Officer and groundsman Keith Richardson came out of retirement to help make up the numbers for the 2nd XI in the home game against Langholm in the First Division of the EVCL. He went in at No6 and made 40 not out. Praise must also go to young Mathew Loan who featured in an unbeaten partnership for the eighth wicket. Mathew made only a solitary run but bravely kept the Langholm bowlers at bay while his marginally older batting partner did his best to give the home side a respectable total. KESWICK Cricket Club’s Under 19 LakeHawks team – captained by Steve Moss and managed by John Bryson reached the county final of the competition (now to be played at the outset of the 2019 season). The LakeHawks qualified through a victory at Whitehaven where Dan John Webster Craghill hit an undefeated and typically cavalier 50 that included no fewer than 10 boundaries. Mark Cameron receives his Cumbria Coach of the Year award from Sir Ian Botham coach. The first was as Cumbria coach when we went to the Taunton festival in 2012 with an under 13 side. We were drawn with Surrey (who hadn’t been beaten for two years) and Lancashire. We beat Surrey when they decided they had scored enough and declared with four overs left. We knocked off 250 plus with some great runchase scoring from Liam Trevaskis (now at Durham), Chris McBride and three KCC players in Sam Barrett, Stephen Moss and James McGown. We then restricted Lancashire to 163 which was still a tall order as we hadn’t beaten them for years. We knocked them off seven down on the last ball of the game with Trevaskis hitting a six (a four would have done but he didn’t like simple). Secondly, we come to 2013 when I was coach at KCC. The County Cup had always eluded Keswick until one August Sunday that year at Appleby. We were second favourites to a very strong Furness CC side but Paul Hindmarch made a breathtaking 93 and there was some great support from our Sri Lankan professional Geeth Kumara and Glen Weightman. And contrary to what they might tell you they really are more than a touch competitive. I can only see that side of the club going from strength to strength. I’m looking forward to seeing them play this year and getting more people involved. Maybe the men can take a leaf out of their book! Q. What is the funniest thing you have ever witnessed or been part of on or around a cricket field? A. On the pitch, I loved playing in the same side as Graham Monkhouse, the former Surrey all rounder (now Mark Cameron in action at Edenhall groundsman). Graham is a Fitz Park and looking very good speaker and has been almost athletic despite his around the block and the world many injuries. Test selector playing cricket. PICTURED AT EDENHALL BACK IN THE DAY: Keswick 1st XI (back row left to right) Neil Swainson, Peter Kirkby, Dave Tindall, Paul Way, Richard Allen, Dennis Hayes. Front row (left to right) Keith Richardson, John Webster, Brian Hewer (captain) Basil (‘Cometh the hour’) Carter and Chris Hayes. We might not have always won at Edenhall (a notoriously difficult away game) but we could certainly pose for a picture.

AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING: Coaches Dennis Hayes and Keith Richardson (front centre) and an early group of youngsters who were coached in the old gymnasium on the original Keswick School site in the centre of town. We cannot recall the names of all of the youngsters here but immediately recognise a cheeky (nothing ever changes there then) Stephen Bragg (back row far right), Paul Barnes (front row far right) and is it Jack Spedding (back row second from left)? To name a few.

All IN A ROW AT EDENSIDE: Left to right are: Andrew (The Flashing Blade) Appleby, Chris Greenhow, Kenny (Wide) Malvern, Stephen Bragg and Steve Clark.

BLACK AND WHITE DAYS: Steve Clark must have won the match for Keswick 1st XI against a Workington team at Fitz Park. Andrew Appleby follows him into the pavilion and looks very relaxed and happy, hand in pocket.

JUNIOR DAYS: We reckon there’s a young D’Leny, a Temple, a Downie and a Price among this happy band of KCC juniors, probably from 1995 after the present pavilion was built. Can you identify the remainder?
