Recognizing the transnational religious activities and creative adaptations of the new immigrants to new environments can enrich the study of assimilation, which reflects the changing picture of multilayered American society and its constituents. To examine the assimilation process of Korean immigrants through their transnational religious activities, my research examines both organizations and individuals seeking long-distance spiritual and practical guidance to negotiate identities in a new land and find meaning to their lives. Rather than assuming the inevitable process of assimilation, this study of Korean immigrants’ assimilation under the influence of transnational engagements can provide a changing understanding of assimilation, which emphasizes dynamic and reciprocal adaptations between immigrants and both sending and receiving societies. ii Table of Contents I. The Scope of the Dissertation and Thesis In recent studies of immigration, transnational migration is one of the primary research topics as more migrants develop strong ties to more than one country, blurring the boundaries of social and geographical spaces. As Alejandro Portes et al. indicates, even though “back-and-forth movements by immigrants have always existed, they have not acquired until recently the critical mass and complexity necessary to speak of an emergent social field.”1 Along with the rapid development of transportation, information technology, and various global networks, the growth of transnational activities has started to draw attention from the public and academia. Considering transnational ties of immigrants in contemporary American society, important questions can be posed in relation to issues of assimilation. Are assimilation and transnational engagements a zero-sum game? In what ways and to what extent do transnational activities affect the changing patterns and degrees of assimilation of immigrants? A conventional view of assimilation suggests that transnational activities impede the process of assimilation, which anticipates the full incorporation of immigrants to the American mainstream. As José Casanova argues, “the traditional model of assimilation, turning European nationals into American ‘ethnics,’ can no longer serve as a model of assimilation.”2 For the new immigrants, who mainly consist of non-Europeans, the classical meaning of assimilation provides a very limited application. Because of the different physical appearances of the new immigrants, they have been confronted with the grave prejudice of the host society as unassimilable, and, thus, rarely felt that they would be fully admitted to the American mainstream society. In addition, given the process of globalization and the unprecedented level of access to original nations and traditions, it is timely and significant to investigate how the new immigrants assimilate into American society connected with transnational activities. Until recently, while most transnational migration studies focused on economic, political, and socio-cultural factors, scholars rarely provided a sufficient account of the reality of religion in transnational activities and its relation to the process of assimilation of immigrants in American society. Unlike sociopolitical and economic dimensions of transnationalism, however, religious activities are significant to illuminate more internal and profound aspects of assimilation of newcomers in terms of the negotiation of identity in a new nation, search for belonging, and the establishment of moral values. Yet, due to the relative novelty of stable and regular transnational connections, religious studies on new immigrant groups have produced limited research in this phenomenon. This can also be applied to religious studies on Korean immigrants and their congregations. In order to advance religious studies on Korean immigrants and their congregations, my research will explore how Korean immigrants access religious resources through transnational networks and activities, and in what ways and to what extent transnational religious activities are related to the assimilation process of Korean immigrants in the United States. In particular, it will focus on the transnational connections of Korean Christians (Protestants) residing in the Denver area3 and the effects of these dynamic transnational religious engagements on Korean immigrants, the original country, and the host nation. By investigating what types and degrees of transnational religious engagement prevail among Korean immigrants and by examining the individual and social factors that shape transnational religious participation, I will present the extent and effects of transnational religious activities in the process of assimilation and draw a conclusion which can provide alternative ideas to the conventional expectations of assimilation based upon the experiences of Korean immigrants. 2. Statement of the Problem Controversies about assimilation continue in recent studies of immigration. As Peggy Levitt and B. Religion received little attention in Romanian studies on migration undertaken so far. Using the results of our survey among Romanian international migrants of different religious faiths, this paper aims to raise interest in migration-religion relationship and, at the same time, to improve the understanding of the economic performance factors in a migration context by focusing on the distinctive characteristics of Romanian religious minorities. We address both the theoretical and the empirical dimension of this topic, making use of various statistical methods. Our main findings are consistent with the assumption that religious belief is reflecting upon the behavior and economic performance of Romanian migrants. Employing ethnographic-based fieldwork, the study highlights how Chinese international students see their experiences in CCC as a source of acculturation to U.S. society. However, the students evidence little understanding of the reality that they are in fact being acculturated to a subculture within U.S. society that at times embraces values contradictory to those of progressive-oriented East Coast University. Park The following dissertation is an examination of the social construction and maintenance of traditional ethnic and religious identities among the rising generation of Asian Americans in the 21st century. Using an interviewed sample of 99 Asian American college student leaders at four public universities and a surveyed sample of 325 Asian American college students, I asked a set of parallel questions with regard to how the respondents understand their ethnic and religious backgrounds. The evidence based on these samples suggests that traditional identities are a constructive effort or a form of personal agency. These constructions however are derived from the available discourse in American public narratives, particularly that of race and religion. I show that not only do these public narratives produce different interpretations of ethnicity or religion when considered separately, but they also interact and inform one another in complex ways. This suggests that identities like these are both fluid and fixed relative to the social relationships embedded within family, friendships, schools, and local organizations

Estimation of extended ‘mass participation equations’ and ‘prayer equations’ leads to the following findings: (a) immigrants are indeed more religious than the populations in the receiving countries, both in Europe and in the United States; and (b) while in the United States the religiosity of immigrants serves as a bridge between the immigrants and the local population, in Europe it has mainly the function of a buffer and of a “balm for the soul”. There is an extensive literature on the ‘bridge versus buffer’ (or ‘bridge versus boundary’) theories and their different implications in the United States and in Europe.

Abel Doctoral Candidate University of Washington Abstract If we assume that there are few remaining external barriers to religious assimilation for Jews in the United States, a fundamental question arises: Why do some Jews exit Judaism, while others choose to stay with the religion? One of the major themes in the literature about American Judaism is that the reformulation of Jewish theology and practice instigated by some Jewish leaders in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was necessary to strengthen the religion. They believed that if Jews were required to continue in their traditional ways, they would only become disillusioned and leave the faith. Some researchers agree that a traditional and exclusive Jewish religion with its focus on strict ritual observance, the coming of a Messiah, and a book of law dictated by God to Moses will not retain members. They argue that religious adherents will be most effectively retained by groups that are more socially appealing.

We advance research on this topic by analyzing the growth of magazines affiliated with religious groups in antebellum America, when the nation was becoming a modern society. We draw on the sociology of religion, organizations, and media to develop hypotheses linking the growth of denominational magazines to inter-denominational competition, intra-denominational fragmentation, denominations’ geographic dispersion, and denominational resource sharing across locations. We test these hypotheses using dynamic techniques on a unique dataset that includes all religious denominations and denominational magazines in the United States between 1790 and 1860. The study confirms, first of all, that both groups of newcomers experience a decrease in religious practices after the migratory event. This decrease is more pronounced among Muslim Turks than among Catholic Poles and more pertinent for worship attendance than for prayer.
