Mr Breslau was severely burnt in a commercial airline crash in New York in 1963. He received burns to 45 percent of his body, spent five years in hospital and had more than 50 operations. ‘‘I had no nose, no ear, no hair, the top of my head was gone. I was pretty gruesome I guess.’’ Mr Breslau recovered and formed the Phoenix Society in the United States to help burns survivors and their families. Thirty years on it is an international organisation offering peer support, edu- cation and advocacy to people affected by a burn injury. It was burns that brought Mr Breslau and his New Zea- land wife Delwyn together at a world conference in the US. Mrs Breslau had estab- lished the Burn Support Group Charitable Trust in Auckland after her son was badly burnt in an explosion and was attending to learn what support was available worldwide.
