Moths & Butterflies of Swamp Lover’S preServe Compiled by Kyle E. Johnson Data Sources and Acknowledgements This checklist is based primarily on specimens collected and determined by the author (598 species). Jerry Goth, Steve Bransky, Hugo Kons Jr., Bob Borth, and Les Ferge contributed 101 additional species. Terry Harrison, Jean-Francois Landry, Hugo Kons Jr., Les Ferge, George Balogh, and Bob Borth helped identify a few troublesome species and/or gave taxonomic advice. All species but one are based on voucher specimens; Callophrys gryneus is based on a photograph by Ann Thering. Specimens taken by the author and Jerry Goth are housed in the University of Wisconsin- Madison Insect Research Collection (WIRC); these have detailed data and are fully databased. Specimens taken by other contributors are housed in their respective research collections. The author thanks Jerry Goth, Lee Swanson, and Linnea Smith for their boundless hospitality and enthusiasm which make visiting the preserve such a pleasure. I thank Dan Young and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Insect Research Collection for the lab space and other resources which make such projects possible. Finally, I thank the contributors and other entomologist friends for good company in the field. Micro Moths = 203+ species Butterflies = 51 species Macro Moths = 446+ species Total Lepidoptera = 700 species Biodiversity on the Preserve How many more species are out there? A whole lot is the short answer. Sampling on the preserve thus far has been rather opportunistic and focused on a few key areas. There are still weaknesses in seasonal coverage, habitats which have been sparsely investigated, and sampling techniques which need attention. Additional species even lurk among the specimens already collected as some remain unidentified, the vast majority of these being “micro moths”. Thus the micro moths are quite underrepresented in this checklist. A conservative estimate suggests that 700 species is roughly the “half-way mark”. At Mosquito Hill Nature Center in Outagamie County Hugo Kons Jr. (pers. comm.) surveyed for macro moths and butterflies intensively over many years; he documented an impressive 782 species. Had micro moths been included this total could almost double as they represent nearly half the ordinal diversity and have great potential for undescribed species. Thus 1500 species is a reasonable estimate for Lepidoptera diversity at Swamp Lover’s Preserve. What about total insect diversity? Lepidoptera is one of four mega diverse insect orders. Diptera (flies) and Hymenoptera (wasps and kin) are similarly diverse in terms of described species (globally), whereas Coleoptera (beetles) is double. The remaining orders combined are comparable to Lepidoptera. Given these crude ratios 8500 species would be a conservative estimate of insect biodiversity at the preserve. We still do not know, however, if these diversity ratios are similar across the Wisconsin landscape. What we can say for certain is that the insect diversity is overwhelming, and that a daunting amount of work remains just to sense what species inhabit the land, much less their ways of life. The following specimen images illustrate species documented from the preserve. They are from various sources and usually do not represent the actual specimens collected from this project. Taxonomy generally follows the Moth Photographers Group website for simplicity. 1 MICRO MOTHS Tineidae Acrolophidae Nepticulidae Leucomele miriamella Acrolophus arcanella © Kyle Johnson © Jim Vargo
