Dear Senators Udall and Heinrich, and Representatives Pearce, Lujan, and Lujan Grisham:

As hunters, anglers and outdoor recreationists, we write to urge you to permanently reauthorize and provide full and dedicated funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).

LWCF is one of America’s most successful conservation programs. In , the fund has provided over $315 million to protect and enhance lands enjoyed by millions of New Mexico residents and visitors each year. Just some of the areas that have benefitted from LWCF include Petroglyph National Monument, El Malpais, Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, and Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monuments; the Gila, Cibola, Sante Fe and Carson National Forests; Pecos and Chaco Culture National Historical Parks; and numerous landscapes in between. LWCF state assistance grants have supported over 1,000 projects across New Mexico’s state and local parks including Mesilla Valley Bosque and Eagle Nest Lake State Parks. There are numerous pending and proposed projects in New Mexico that are in need of continued LWCF funding.

As sportsmen and women, LWCF is personal to all of us who have spent years hunting and fishing on our nation’s public lands. Through projects aimed at providing and improving public access to public lands, LWCF has played a vital role in creating greater hunting and fishing opportunities for generations of Americans. LWCF has also been critical in restoring healthy forests, watersheds and fisheries as well as preserving essential wildlife habitat and connectivity for species like elk, mule deer, pronghorn, black bear, cougar, bighorn sheep as well as a variety of birds and native fish.

Unfortunately, LWCF expired on September 30th. Join us in asking Congress to permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund and commit to fully funding it at the appropriate level of $900 million annually NOW.
