Montescudaio Many years ago, long after the Roman Empire had fallen and become forgotten, there was a wealthy landowner called Larth who owned a great estate around Montescudaio. He also had a beautiful daughter called Velia who he loved dearly. As was the tradition back then, her father gave her an exquisite diamond brooch to mark her entry from adolescence into adulthood. The diamond was set in gold with decorations representing the leaves and branches of the vine. Velia wore the brooch all her life as a token of her father’s love for her, however, after her death the brooch disappeared. Its whereabouts remained unknown for many centuries until, in 1853 a peasant called Rinaldo was working on the land. As he was tilling the field, his ox-drawn plough struck a strange gleaming clod of earth. He picked it up and discovered that it was the same diamond brooch lost by Velia twelve centuries earlier. He immediately took it home to show his wife Maria, and together they put it on the mantelpiece above the fire and called it their ‘rappo d’oro’ (small golden branch). Sadly, when they died no-one knows what happened to their ‘rappo d’oro’.

In addition, extensive olive groves around Lucca produce a quality olive oil that bears the region’s name. There is a range of heavy industry and engineering in the area, including the Piaggio factories that make motorcycles, scooters and small aeroplanes. Additionally, there is a petrochemical industry around Leghorn, a textile industry around Prato, and steel factories around Piombino. Marble is quarried in Versilia (Massa and Carrara), Garfagnana, and in the Alpi Apuane. However, the economic backbone of the region is tourism, mainly thanks to the "Cities of Art" (Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano). Finally, there is also the splendid coastline, offering clear blue Mediterranean Sea running onto sandy beaches spotted with an array of quality restaurants.

The Italian dream In recent years, rapidly rising house prices here in the UK have forced many property investors to look abroad in order to increase their potential returns. Of course, this isn’t just a British phenomenon. The same thing is starting to happen in Tuscany, but there is a massive difference. Character properties such as these are in extremely short supply, but in addition to this, Tuscany’s planning authorities have placed strict controls on new property development, in order to preserve the unique beauty and character of the region. You really are buying something truly special, and that’s why Tuscany is the favourite area of Italy amongst affluent British property investors.

It’s not just about the potential financial rewards, though. It’s also about the lifestyle. You can finish work on a Friday evening with the intention of having dinner in an Italian restaurant, hop on the plane and within a couple of hours or so, you could be enjoying your meal… in a restaurant… in Italy.
