It is not sure Haryana acquired its name. 'Historians have tried to explain the origin of the word "Haryana" on the basis of phonetics. To some 'Haryana' is the landing place of 'Har' (Lord Indera) and his 'lyana' (Chariot) While to others 'Haryana' is the corrupt form of 'Aryana', the abode ol Aryanas. Some historians associated it with 'Haryalavan' - i.e. the green forest that oncc characterised this part of the Indo Gangetic plains. Toporaphv; Haryana is one of the smaller spates in terms of area & populalion. Its total geographical arcn, I-; 44212 Sq. Kms. i.e. 1.3% of the total area od country. The slaic is siuiatcd w ithin Ihc compass o!' northern region of the Indian union with Uttar Pardesh to its east. Punjab to its west, a pari of Himanchal Pardesh to its north, and a vast expanse orRajasihai) to its south, wiih Dcliii roi inatiiig an enclave on its eastern boundaiy. The state of Haryana is bounded by the Shivalik hills in the north & the Aravali hills in the south. There are some high ridges running throughout the tract from the north-west to the north-east. I'hc ridges are known as the 'Morni Hills' (the average elevation of about 1065 mts.) & the 'Fipra Mills' (The average elevation of about 1370 mts.) These hills arc separated by the valley of the Ghaggar river. The highest point in the tract is known the 'Karoh Pack' (1499 mts. Of the Nahan border). Climate: The climate of Haryana is of a pronounced continental charactcr - very hot in summer and marked by cold in winter. The temperature during the months of May & .June soars as high as 46“ Celsius and it falls as low as 3° - 4° Celsius in the month of Januaiy. The rain-fall in the region is low & erratic except in parts of Karn?l, Ambala & Panehkula districts. People: The racial, religious & cultural composition of the people ol' llaryaiia has tmdci jAoiic as iiiscssaiil mctaniQirphosis but time & age lailed to write wrinkles on their brow. The 1 laryanavis have relamed some their traditional traits & characteristics. It is in the folklores have ever been preserved with the balm of tradition & passed on from one generation to the other like other aspects of cultural heritage.

    CHAPTER VII COMMUNICATIONS INTRODUCTION From time immemorial, it has been recognized in India that the provision of facilities for efficient road system was one of the primary duties of the ruler. Indian history is full of references to the road; policy and road construction in vogue in different periods. A clear picture of the conditions is available on coming down to the Mauryan period when political consolidation and more efficient administration promoted commerce and industry along with greater use of communications and transport for internal trade. A royal road 10,000 stades (about 2400 kilometre) in length, ran from the North-West Frontier to Patliputra, passing through the district, with milestones showing distances and by roads and signposts at every tenth stade1. Chandragupta Maurya had a whole army of officials overseeing the maintenance of this road as told by the Greek diplomat Megasthenes who spent fifteen years at the Mauryan court. Kautilya refers to this road as the kings’ highway (rajmarg). This principal highway connected the Raja Griha to Taxsila , to frontiers and to central and western Asia. In the medieval period, Sher Shah Suri recognizing the advantage of improved means of communication built afresh the road from the coast of Bengal to his great fort at Rohtas, the north of Jhelum, in 1543. This road was later improved upon by the Mughal emperors who constructed spacious sarais with bricks and stones 8 kos (approx. 16 miles) apart and 20-30 feet high kos minars two and half miles apart. The kos minars extent at a number of places in the district and the gateway at Samalkha mark the route of old royal road.
