Doty Takes WoO Knoxville Spring Opener Prelim by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Brad Doty, aboard the Marks-Kepler Gambler sprinter captured the preliminary twenty-lap World of Outlaw Spring Opener at the Friday night. The win paid Doty $2,000 and transferred him into the Saturday night finale.

The feature also transferred second through fourth place as those spots went to Bobby Davis Jr., Steve Kinser and Jac Haudenschild respectively.

Doty, who grabbed the lead on lap six from Davis, sailed through lapped traffic. By mid-point in the race, Kinser had come into contention with Johnny Herrera and Haudenschild in close pursuit.

A yellow flag on lap seventeen, again bunched the cars, but Doty was able to pull away again and lead to the checkered. Herrera finished fifth with Jimmy Sills, Craig Keel, Danny Smith, Cris Eash and Bob East finishing in positions six through ten.

Kinser led an onslaught against Marion County track records as he dashed to a one-lap time trial of 16.553 to erase a 1985 mark set by Doug Wolfgang. Haudenschild set a new standard for eight laps in his qualifying heat race, and Sills put a new record on the books for twelve laps in the B Feature. Additional heat race events went to Danny Smith, and Rocky Hodges.

WoO Knoxville Spring Opener to Kinser by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Steve Kinser, aboard the Karl Kinser Coors Light Gambler, drove to a convincing win before a huge crowd at the Knoxville Spring Opener Saturday night. The win, which extended the fleet Kinser’s WoO point lead, paid $8000 and was his 176th World of Outlaw feature event win.

“I about got caught loafin’,” Kinser said in victory lane as he referred to Jac Haudenschild’s late race charge. “I was just trying to stay out of the holes. The track was rough tonight and there toward the end, I thought I had a better lead,” the Hoosier concluded.

The twenty-five lap event was halted on lap eight, when race leader Bobby Davis Jr. tangled with a lapped car as he entered turn two. The impact sent the Mud City native tumbling into the fence. He was taken to the Knoxville Area Community Hospital complaining of discomfort in an arm and in his back. No report was available at press time.

Kinser assumed the lead on the restart, and a two car battled ensued when Haudenschild came into contention shortly thereafter. Both used great portions of the half-mile oval as they fought through lapped traffic for the top spots, but at the checkereds it was Kinser with the win. Haudenschild earned $4,500 for his runner-up efforts. Brad Doty, Mark Kinser and Danny Smith rounded out the top five finishers.

Finishing in positions six through ten respectively were Cris Eash, Jimmy Sills, Shane Carson, Ron Shuman and Bob East. Shuman turned in the best passing performance of the evening after starting twentieth.

Mark Kinser set yet another track record for this weekend, erasing cousin Steve’s twenty-four hour old mark during qualifying time trials with a clocking of 16.500. Heats for the Spring Opener were won by Jeff Tuttle, Shuman, Greg Rule and Smith. The B feature went to John Stevenson.

Jeff Tuttle Grabs Knoxville Season Opener by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – The thirty-fourth season opener at the Knoxville Raceway was captured by a young Jeff Tuttle as he drove the Bob Tuttle sprinter to a twenty-lap feature event win Saturday night.

The race, which was hotly contested for the entire distance, saw Tuttle take the lead at the outset. From lap six to the finish, he was challenged at close range by Danny Lasoski, who had moved up from a row three starting berth. The twosome diced repeatedly through lapped traffic with Tuttle always able to sustain the advantage at the flagstand.

As the white flag flew, Tuttle went high into the loose dirt in turn one and Lasoski brought the large opening night crowd to its feet as he dove low for the lead. Tuttle was able to fend him off and recaptured the top spot, as he exited on the second turn. Randy Smith, who started in row eight, finished fast to gain third, John Stevenson took fourth and Ray Lipsey was fifth.

Tony Armstrong, Bob East, TJ Giddings, Gabby Lusk and Tim Monson finished in positions six through ten respectively. Heats for the winged sprints were won by Stevenson, Lasoski and Smith.

The limited sprint portion of the program saw former division track champion, Dean Chadd, capture the checkered flag. Brother Mike Chadd came from the tail to finish second, Mackie Heimbaugh was third, Terry Thorson finished fourth and Rookie Mike Twedt made his Knoxville debut a memorable one as he ran fifth.

Randy Smith Claims $2000 Go At Knoxville by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Randy Smith drove to an exciting twenty-lap feature event victory in the Bob Trostle sprinter to claim $2000 at the Knoxville Raceway Saturday night.

Last week’s winner, Jeff Tuttle, took the lead at the outset of the race, but dropped on lap four. Marlon Jones then assumed the top spot and was closely pursued by Danny Lasoski until he passed Jones in lapped traffic on lap fifteen.

For the next three laps, Lasoski held off the advances of Jones, and a hard-charging Smith. Craig Keel, who was also in the thick of the hunt for the top spot, trailed Smith closely.

On the nineteenth lap, Smith made a daring move as he dove between Lasoski and Jones, who were running side by side, to claim the lead when exited turn three. Jones was able to take the faltering Lasoski as did Keel, but it was Smith across the finish line for his twenty-second career win at the Knoxville Raceway.

Finishing fifth through tenth were Ray Lipsey, Jerry Beeck Jr., TJ Giddings, Tony Armstrong, Ron Milton and Jaymie Moyle. Terry McCarl, Bruce Drottz and Moyle captured qualifying heat races.

Tuttle, Chadd, Claim Second Knoxville Features of 1987 Season by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Jeff Tuttle took the lead at the drop of the green flag and drove to a convincing win in the 20- lap feature event at the Knoxville Raceway Saturday night.

Tuttle, aboard his father’s winged sprinter, claimed $2000 for the win, his second feature victory at Knoxville this year. Trailing a close second was last week’s winner, Randy Smith, who received $1,500 for his efforts.

A week of rain made for a rough and bumpy track, but Tuttle proved masterful of track conditions as he moved through lapped traffic. TJ Giddings, Tony Armstrong and Terry McCarl trailed Tuttle and Smith to the checkered flag.

Mike Chadd claimed his second limited sprint feature in a row as he moved from his sixth row starting position to take the top spot on lap ten. Greg Helms, Dean Chadd, Rick McClure and Bob Thompson formed the top five finishers of that event.

Next week the Knoxville Raceway will present the 15th Annual Mini-Nationals. The event will carry a $15,000 purse with $2,200 going to the winner of the feature race.

Smith Scores Knoxville Mini-Nationals Win by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Three-time Knoxville track champion, Randy Smith, took a late race lead to capture the fifteenth annual Knoxville Mini-Nationals at the Marion County Fairgrounds Saturday night.

Smith, who started in the third row, came into contention for the top spot on lap fifteen as he caught race leader Danny Lasoski at the flagstand and took that position at the completion of the eighteenth circuit. He then powered the Bob Trostle sprinter away from a fading Lasoski to take the $2,200 victory and his twenty-third career feature event win at the track.

Terry McCarl and John Stevenson also passed Lasoski to finish second and third, Lasoski was fourth and Tony Armstrong finished fifth. Bob East, Jerry Beeck Jr., Ray Lipsey, TJ Giddings and Bruce Drottz rounded out the top ten finishers.

In the companion limited sprint program, Mike Chadd captured his third feature event win in a row to extend his advantage in the season point race. Chadd took the lead on the eighth lap and was trailed to the checkereds by Toby Lawless, Terry Thorson, Bob Thompson and Greg Helms. The win paid Chadd $450 for his efforts.

Tuttle, Chadd Again Score Knoxville Feature Wins by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Jeff Tuttle scored a convincing win at the Knoxville Raceway Saturday night as he picked up his third feature event victory of the 1987 season. Tuttle garnered $2000 in the Goodyear shod Trostle sprinter owned by his father.

Mike Chadd captured his fourth feature event win in a row as he survived three yellow flags to claim the limited sprint card.

Tuttle, who drove through lapped traffic to perfection, caught a yellow flag instead of the white from flagman Doug Clark, but pulled away on the restart for the win. The restart saw several position changes occur as Terry McCarl grabbed second, TJ Giddings took third and Danny Lasoski faded to fourth with Ray Lipsey jumping to fifth at the finish.

Albuquerque’s Johnny Herrera drove off the Outlaw circuit to place sixth as he and seventh finisher, Randy Smith, fought for position the entire race. Tony Armstrong was eighth, John McCoy took ninth, and Bob East rounded out the top ten.

Chadd, who heads the limited sprint point standings, took the lead after a lap ten restart. He was challenged at the checkereds by a quick finishing Mike Twedt. Terry Thorson crossed in third, Bob Thompson was fourth and Larry Webb finished fifth.

Danny Lasoski Claims Knoxville Mid-Season Championship by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – It took half the season and weeks of frustration, but 1986 Knoxville Track Champion, Danny Lasoski, wheeled the winged sprinter of the Scotch Grove Racing Team into victory lane Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway.

“This is the old car from last year with a new motor,” Lasoski said in victory lane. “And it really feels good.” The victory paid the “Show Me” state driver $2,200 to win and extended his narrow point margin during the 34th Annual Mid-Season Championship at this historic half-mile oval.

Lasoski grabbed the lead after a second lap restart, and survived an additional trio of cautions to win going away. Chasing him to the checkereds was Randy Smith, who trailed in the point standings by a mere five markers going into the event.

Fast qualifier, Andy Hillenburg, finished in the third spot, as Ray Lipsey came from the tail to place fourth. Jerry Beeck Jr., John Stevenson, Bob East, Tony Armstrong, TJ Giddings and Mike Proffitt rounded out the top ten.

1986 Knoxville Rookie of the Year in the limited sprint division, Terry Thorson, led from flag to flag in claiming his initial career feature win. Bobby Thompson, Toby Lawless, Larry Webb and Randy Babcock trailed. Mike Chadd, who had won the previous four weeks, dropped from the event at the mid-point.

Next week is “Return of the Wolf” night as Doug Wolfgang returns on behalf of the Variety Clubs of Iowa.

Tuttle Claims Knoxville’s “Return of the Wolf II” by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Jeff Tuttle, aboard the Bob Tuttle sprinter, captured the twenty-lap feature event at the Knoxville Raceway during an evening designated as “Return of the Wolf Night II”.

Doug Wolfgang, who won the event in 1986, failed to win a $10,000 bonus for a clean sweep from the tail of his events, as early in the evening his engine let go during a qualifying heat race. With Wolfgang out, Dean Chadd then picked up $1000 for being the first to beat the “Wolf”.

Tuttle, who lead from flag to flag, collected $2000 for his efforts in the rare Sunday night show, which was delayed twenty-four hours by rain. It marked his fourth feature event win at Knoxville for the 1987 season.

Wolfgang, who managed an engine change after his ill-fated heat race, started on the tail of the A feature, but again lost an engine on the sixth lap after moving to a mid-pack position. On the restart, Terry McCarl hooked a rut in turn four, flipping sideways and becoming airborne. The tumbling sprinter struck the wings of several other cars as it bounded about. McCarl was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to a Des Moines hospital for further observation.

From that point on, Tuttle led through several more cautions as he fought off the determined challenges of Danny Lasoski at the checkereds. Behind that duo were tail-end starters Rocky Hodges and TJ Giddings, Randy Smith and Larry Ball Jr. Rounding out the top ten were Tony Armstrong, Dean Chadd, Mike Proffitt and Bruce Drottz.

Bobby Thompson took his initial feature win of 1987 in the Limited Sprint feature in a race which saw the positions directly behind him change with every lap. At the finish, Toby Lawless, Greg Helms, Mike Twedt and Randy Babcock formed the top five finishers.

Knoxville WoO Event Falls to Rain by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Showers and thunderstorms put a damper on the World of Outlaws feature event at the Knoxville Raceway Wednesday night. Four heats and the B main had been run before the rains fell.

Lasoski Resumes Form in Knoxville Raceway Win by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Danny Lasoski resumed the form which guided him to last year’s track title as he drove the Scotch Grove Racing Team sprinter to a twenty-lap win at the Knoxville Raceway Saturday night.

Lasoski, who claimed $2000 for the feature event victory, started on the pole position an never relinquished the top spot. He was able to forge a commanding lead and extended it in lapped traffic on a track which turned dry and dusty.

Tony Armstrong, who ran second the entire distance, held that spot to the checkereds ahead of a fast closing Randy Smith. Shane Carson, Bob East, Jaymie Moyle, TJ Giddings, Jeff Tuttle, Mike Proffitt and Mark Shaffer completed the top ten finishers.

In the companion Limited Sprints, Mike Chadd scored his fifth feature event win of the 1987 season as he guided his new Gambler of Iowa sprinter from the tail to the top spot for the victory. Terry Thorson, Randy Babcock, Larry Webb and Tom Whiting finished in that order at the line.

At trackside ceremonies during the evening, four men were inducted into the Knoxville Raceway Hall of Fame. The ninth annual affair saw Jack Redmond, , Mike Brooks and Boge Johnson become new members.

Jeff Tuttle Flies to Fifth Knoxville Sprint Feature Win by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Jeff Tuttle wheeled the Bob Tuttle winged sprinter to a twenty-lap feature even win during the Independence Day race Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway. The victory marked Tuttle’s fifth feature win here for the 1987 racing season and paid the young sprint pilot $2000.

Most of the fireworks were provided on back in the pack as Randy Smith, Ray Lipsey, Danny Lasoski, Tony Armstrong and Bob East fought their way forward from deep starting positions.

Tuttle caught race leader, John McCoy, to take the lead on lap nine and extended his margin through a single caution flag to take the win. Following Tuttle to the checkered flag were Smith, Lipsey, East, McCoy, Lasoski, Armstrong, Mike Proffitt, Greg Roorda and Terry McCarl.

In the companion Limited Sprint program, Greg Helms led through three yellow flag situations to capture his initial feature event win for the 1987 season. The race proved to be an exciting battle, as the top four finishers crossed the line within fifty yards of each other. Mike Twedt, Toby Lawless, Larry Webb and Randy Babcock completed the top five.

Hodges Rockets to Second Knoxville Feature Win by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Rocky Hodges took feature event number two in a row at the Knoxville Raceway as he piloted the McBride and Shoff winged sprinter to a twenty-lap win Saturday night.

Hodges, who pocketed $2000 in the event, had trailed race-long leader Terry McCarl from lap seven after Knoxville point leader, Danny Lasoski, crashed in turn two. On the restart, Hodges followed McCarl through ten circuits and took the lead on lap seventeen when that duo came into lapped traffic. Once in the top spot, he then went on to build a substantial margin to take his eleventh career Knoxville feature.

McCarl held the second position with Tony Armstrong, TJ Giddings and Jerry Beeck Jr. forming the top five finishers. Wayne Redmond, Bruce Drottz, John McCoy, Tommy Scott and Greg Roorda rounded out the top ten as the first five drivers in the Knoxville season point standings fell from the event.

In the companion Limited Sprint feature, Terry Thorson took a mid-race lead to capture his second feature event of the 1987 race season. Dean Chadd, Mike Chadd, Matt Fox and Randy Babcock finished behind him.

Next week, the Knoxville Raceway celebrates the 70th Annual Marion County Fair with Limited Sprints on Friday and a full program of both divisions on Saturday.

Kinser Takes Two WoO Features at Knoxville Fair Date by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Steve Kinser was as hot as the recent ninety degree Iowa weather as he put on an awesome show of driving at the World of Outlaws Knoxville Raceway Wednesday race stop. It was a two feature night at the seventieth annual Marion County Fair as the rain-cancelled feature from June was also contested.

In the makeup feature, Kinser beat Sammy Swindell to the first turn from their front row starting positions to take the lead in a race which went green for the entire twenty-five lap distance. Swindell trailed Kinser by a half straightaway through ten laps until he dropped from contention with mechanical difficulties.

Kinser continued to slowly extend his margin in lapped traffic and won going away when the checkered flag fell. Mark Kinser was second, Brad Doty took third, Bobby Davis Jr. finished fourth and Cris Eash tallied fifth.

The second twenty-five laps feature was a wild affair as Lee Brewer Jr. led the first ten laps with Johnny Herrera, Jac Haudenschild and Kinser dicing with each other for the runner-up spot. Herrera took the lead on lap eleven but surrendered to Kinser one lap later as the seven-time World of Outlaw king then cruised to his twenty-fourth 1987 WoO feature event win. Kinser pocketed more than eight thousand dollars for his efforts, which kept him solidly on top of the WoO standings. Sammy Swindell continued his evening of problems as he spun and slid to the infield pit entrance before the first lap was completed. No caution flag was issued.

Herrera held his position to finish in the runner-up spot, Haudenschild finished third, Ron Shuman was fourth and Bobby Allen came across the line for fifth.

In victory lane, Kinser gave much credit to his car owner and uncle, Karl Kinser. “We’ve got the big racing coming up,” Steve said. “Like Karl says, he gets ‘em tuned up for the big ones. We’ve been together since ’78,” Kinser continued, “when you’re on top, it’s easier to stay together.”

Bob Thompson Claims Knoxville Limited Sprint Feature by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Bob Thompson, driving his own limited sprinter, won the feature event at the Knoxville Raceway during the Marion County Fair Friday night. Thompson, who claimed his fifth career feature win, led the entire distance as the weather threatened to put an end to the racing activities.

Thompson took the lead from the outset from his row three starting position. Running behind him were Toby Lawless and Mike Chadd in close order as the trio worked through lapped traffic by lap seven.

As the threesome exited turn two on lap fourteen, Chadd ran up over a tire of lapped car which had spun in front of him. The Chadd sprinter thrashed about and took a slow rollover. He was unable to restart.

Thompson gained the win as the checkered and red flags flew for Mike Twedt, who had struck the fourth turn fence while running fourth. Toby Lawless took the runner-up spot to sustain his season points advantage, Randy Babcock finished third, Walt Esch was fourth and Terry Thorson rounded out the top five.

A Family Affair for Knoxville Fair Sprints by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Terry McCarl made it a family affair as he piloted the Lenard McCarl winged sprinter to a twenty-lap feature event win Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway. The win paid young McCarl and his father $2000 during the 133rd Exhibition of the 70th Annual Marion County Fair.

McCarl took the lead at the outset and never trailed as TJ Giddings and Rocky Hodges fell into pursuit on a track which had turned dry-slick. One early caution slowed the event, but the trio soon faced lapped traffic by the tenth circuit and was joined in the run for the checkereds by Johnny Herrera.

Each circuit saw the foursome struggle with the track, lapped traffic, and each other as only Hodges managed to pass on the final lap in turn four and down the front chute.

McCarl, Hodges and Giddings formed the a near blanket finish at the checkereds with Herrera taking a close fourth. Andy Hillenburg tallied fifth.

The family affair continued in the Limited Sprint feature as Dean Chadd captured his second 1987 main event win while runner-up honors went to his brother Mike Chadd. Terry Thorson took third in the event and vaulted into the seasons’ point lead for the Limited division.

In celebration of the Marion County Fair, McCarl was presented with a thousand pound beef steer and Chadd received a two hundred forty pound market hog.

Danny Lasoski Takes Third Knoxville Feature by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – 1986 Knoxville Track Champion, Danny Lasoski, returned to form at the Knoxville Raceway Saturday night as he powered the Max Rogers Scotch Grove Racing sprinter to a twenty-lap feature event win.

Lasoski had pulled out to a commanding lead after taking the top spot from Jeff Tuttle on lap six. However, the race was halted on lap thirteen when Tuttle and Rocky Hodges made contact while contesting the runner-up spot. Hodges skillfully saved his sprinter from a hard crash into the fence, but took a slow rollover as a result and could not restart.

On the restart, Lasoski again pulled away to take the $2000 to win first place and his sixth career Knoxville Raceway feature event. Tuttle held the second place position, Randy Smith captured third to maintain his narrow season’s point lead over Lasoski, TJ Giddings was fourth and Terry McCarl finished fifth.

In the companion Limited Sprint division, Terry Thorson caught race-long leader Jordan Albaugh at the checkered flag in lapped traffic to record a narrowest of margins feature event win. Mike Chadd took top passing honors as he flew from the tail of the race alignment to place third, Dean Chadd was fourth and Terry Alexander finished fifth.

Randy Smith Takes Knoxville Pre-National Feature Event by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Three-time Knoxville track champion, Randy Smith, guided the Dave Paulson winged sprinter to a twenty-lap feature event victory in a pre-national showdown at the Knoxville Raceway Saturday night. The win paid Smith $2000 as he extended his point lead in a quest for an unprecedented fourth track title.

Smith, who was piloting a new Trostle chassis, had built a substantial lead before a red flag stopped the race on lap fifteen. On the restart, he again pulled away to record his twenty-fourth Knoxville career feature win. Pole- sitter Tony Armstrong came across the line for second, National entrant Jimmy Sills took third, Terry McCarl was fourth and Rocky Hodges finished fifth.

Mike Chadd recorded his sixth feature event win of the 1987 race season to take a narrow points lead in the Limited Sprint portion of the program. Chadd, who was injured in a race away from Knoxville during the month of July, took the lead on lap four and never looked back. Jordan Albaugh, Dean Chadd, Walt Esch and Larry Webb completed the top five finishers. Terry Thorson, the points leader prior to the evening’s activities, finished far down the line with mechanical problems.

Rain Wreaks Havoc at Twenty-seventh Knoxville Nationals by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Knoxville Raceway officials had things off to a good start Friday when once again showers accompanied with dangerous lightning halted the events for the third straight day. The unprecedented string of cancellations has forced the schedule of the 27th Annual Knoxville Nationals to be reshuffled each day since activities began on Wednesday.

The stubborn weather front which has refused to move from the midsection of the nation’s region dumped over an inch of rain on the track shortly after the it gates opened on the initial day of qualifying and brought about the first cancellation. Occasional overnight showers produced an impossible pit area situation on Thursday, but several hundred man hours of labor created a working parking area in the infield.

With the track surface in near perfect condition despite the excess moisture, qualifying time trials pushed off remarkably close to schedule. Californian, Jimmy Sills, eclipsed the existing track record on each of his runs and lowered the mark to 16.461 for the half-mile oval. Forty-seven of the fifty-six entrants had gone through qualifications when once again, the rains fell. A one hour delay ensued before the event was finally called. The Sills’ record was allowed to stand, but the program was a complete washout.

On Friday, track personnel worked throughout the afternoon with a bulldozer, vacuum water pumps, several end loaders and various other machines to clear the pit area of the moisture ladened earth. Huge mounds of black Iowa dirt were shoved to various locations of the infield due to their efforts. Ironically, the track itself was watered as a needed preparation and once again the initial night of National qualifying events was attempted.

Jimmy Sills, aboard the Virgil Owens winged sprinter, again broke the track record as he dashed to a clocking of 16.263 seconds in qualifying time trials. The twenty-four hour old mark also fell to Steve Kinser and Bobby Allen. Qualifying heat races went to Tommy James, Kinser, Terry Gray, Jeff Swindell and Rick Ungar. Sills captured the B main as he and second place Randy Smith transferred to the tail of the ill-fated feature event, which went awash on the first lap when rain began to fall. The completion of that event plus the scheduled second day of qualifying were then moved to Saturday afternoon.

Steve Kinser Takes Rain Delayed National Opener by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Steve Kinser came from a fourth row starting spot to grab a ninth lap restart lead in his Karl Kinser prepared Coors Light sprinter and powered away to a twenty-lap feature event win. The race completed the rained out feature from Friday night. “I tightened the car up to try to run the slick track,” Kinser said concerning the afternoon racing event, “but there towards the last, the track got faster.”

Kinser used all of the track in his move to the front as he rode the high groove in turn one and two and the low groove in three and four. Once in front, he chose the high spot for the remainder of the race as the early track conditions began to change.

Chasing Kinser for the major portion of the race was Ronnie Daniels, who held the lead prior to Kinser’s move into the top spot. Daniels kept the runner-up position to the end with Kelly Kinser, Jeff Swindell and Steve Butler forming the top five finishers.

Sammy Swindell Scores Convincing Second Round National Win by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Sammy Swindell, aboard the Raymond Beadle Blue Max sprinter claimed the second Saturday Knoxville National qualifier in a race staged under bright afternoon Iowa skies. The four day event which had been plagued by rain, ran off with very few hitches after starting late.

Swindell, who sustained a severe shoulder injury a week ago in Tennessee, complained of pain during his qualifying heat race. An additional neck brace and shoulder strap aided the swift Volunteer state native during the event.

“I’m glad we had all the yellows we had,” Swindell commented in victory lane, “since I hurt my shoulder, they helped,” he said in reference to the extra physical restraints.

Swindell led from his pole position, and stretched out a substantial advantage as he passed through lapped traffic. By lap twelve, he had built a half lap lead when the red flag flew for Danny Smith, who had struck the fourth turn fence just beyond the pit gate exit.

On the restart, Swindell assumed another huge margin and was cruising the backstretch on the white flag lap when Brad Doty’s right rear tire blew as he crossed the start/finish line. The final laps were run without incident and Doty managed an eleventh place finish after restarting on the rear.

Following Swindell across the line were Terry McCarl, Lee Brewer Jr. and Mark Kinser. took top passing honors of the event as he drove from the rear of the lineup after transferring out of the B main to take fifth.

The largest field of cars since 1978 took part in the twenty-seventh annual national affair as one hundred twenty drivers went through qualifying time trials.

Steve Kinser Flies to Record Fifth Knoxville Nationals Title by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – “That Karl Kinser’s tougher’n hell!” was the excited admonishment which Steve Kinser bestowed upon his uncle shortly after winning a record fifth title at the 27th Annual Knoxville Nationals Saturday night.

“It’s just one super team and I’m just proud to drive that car,” Kinser continued. “I would get on the bottom and float back,” the new champ said of the handling qualities of the Karl Kinser prepared Coors Light Gambler. “We put in a fresh motor and our Goodyear tires worked.”

The 31st World of Outlaws win in the 1987 season was one of the most awesome National victories of the last decade as the Hoosier native lapped all but the top six cars. Kinser, whose previous titles came in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1986, earned $27,500 for the thirty-lap run and totaled better than $30,000 for his four day efforts.

The seven-time WoO King had earned a pole position start for the National Championship feature by virtue of a 498 point total gained during qualifying events. When the green flag fell on the starting field of twenty-four, Kinser beat fellow front row starter Jeff Swindell to the first turn and the race was effectively over.

By lap six, Kinser had moved into lapped traffic and was leading by a huge margin. His march past seemingly slower cars appeared effortless as he attacked them and the perfect track conditions with orchestrated precision. The outcome, as witnessed by an estimated record crowd of over 14,000 spectators, was typical of Kinser’s 1987 season.

A single yellow flag flew during the event on lap fourteen, when Joe Gaerte stalled his machine against the turn two fence. At that point, Kinser had built a phenomenal half lap lead and he again enjoyed that margin five laps later after the restart.

Second place finisher, Bobby Davis Jr. was in a real dog fight throughout much of the race with Jimmy Sills, Jeff Swindell and Mark Kinser. The foursome ran nose to tail and exchanged running positions in heated competition time and again over the half-mile oval.

Davis finally broke away from that pack shortly after the restart to gain the $17,000 runner-up payoff for the Paul Morgan sprint team and Mark Kinser recorded a $10,500 third place showing with a newly formed team headed by his father, Karl Kinser. Those fans who stayed to witness the victory ceremonies will forever remember the younger Kinser’s abundant excitement and joy over his high finish which was highlighted by an indifferent champagne bottle cork that refused to pop.

Fourth place in the national championship feature went to fast finisher, Kenny Jacobs. Jacobs, who was out of the picture for much of the race, charged hard in the final stages to finish just ahead of Jimmy Sills. Sammy Swindell came from a seventh row starting spot to make a late race pass of his brother to claim sixth. Jeff Swindell held for seventh, Ron Shuman finished eighth, Brad Doty was ninth and Ronnie Daniels rounded out the top ten.

The twenty-two lap B feature provided a real spectator pleaser for the overflow National crowd as Doug Wolfgang came from dead last in the field of twenty-two cars to register a third position running slot as the yellow came out on lap twenty. The placing would have transferred the South Dakota native into the championship feature, but a flat rear tire forced a speedy pit stop in the work area and he was once again relegated to the tail. On the restart, and during the ensuing two laps, Wolfgang gave the legion of “Wolfpack” fans who attended this event an incredible driving exhibition, as he finished ninth.

Due to excess water held in the soil as a result of the nearly five inches of rain in four days, the D feature was finally pushed off at midnight to begin the evening’s activities. It was truly a monumental effort by the track crews and the infield crew officials to prepare and make ready for racing an impossible situation brought about by the inclement weather. Never in the twenty-seven years which this event has been staged, has such a Herculean task been called for and delivered.

Knoxville Nationals Conclude With McCarl and Kauffman Winning Sunday Features by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – Events of the 27th Annual Knoxville Nationals were completed Sunday night at the Knoxville Raceway as Terry McCarl and Keith Kauffman captured the twenty-lap feature events.

McCarl’s win came in the A feature as he chased race-long leader, Rich Bubak, for sixteen circuits around the half-mile oval. A yellow was thrown at that point and all cars closed on the leaders.

On the restart, McCarl charged to the outside, motored past Bubak down the front chute, and took the lead going into turn one. Bubak held for the runner-up spot, Keith Kauffman came from deep in the pack to claim third, Cris Eash was fourth and Rocky Hodges took passing honors from a twentieth starting slot to finish fifth.

The Race of States feature, which is always a dandy at Nationals time, saw Keith Kauffman win for the state of Pennsylvania. Johnny Herrera took the initial lead and was chased by Kauffman through the first six laps.

The Keystone state pilot began working the high side of the track and charged past Herrera on the outside through turns three and four to take a lead which was never relinquished. Herrera stayed within striking range of the fleet Hardee’s sponsored car, but could never mount a passing effort as the duo raced nose to tail.

Kauffman took the win as the final checkereds flew on the 1987 Nationals with Herrera placing a close second. Terry McCarl was third, Rocky Hodges finished fourth and Jimmy Sills took fifth.

Lasoski and Chadd Score Feature Event Wins at Knoxville Finale by Bob Wilson

Knoxville, IA – The Knoxville Raceway waved the final checkered flag on its thirty-fourth season of weekly racing as Danny Lasoski and Dean Chadd captured feature events Saturday night at the season championships of the Knoxville Raceway. The concluding events crowned Randy Smith and Mike Chadd as point champions in their respective sprint divisions for 1987.

Lasoski, who led from green to checkereds and survived three yellow flag restart situations in the twenty-lap feature, finished a scant sixty-five markers behind Smith for the track championship. The victory, which was Lasoski’s seventh career win here, paid the Missouri pilot $2,500 and gained the owners track title for Max Rogers.

Smith claimed an unprecedented fourth Knoxville title, but fell from the event on lap sixteen while running third in a race-long battle with Terry McCarl. However, the newly crowned track titlist was victorious in the $5,000 to win Miller Trophy Dash.

McCarl held his position to place second in the feature, Tod Bishop was third, Jeff Tuttle took fourth and Ray Lipsey finished fifth. Doug Wolfgang, aboard the Stanley Shoff sprinter, captured sixth after twice starting at the tail of the event.

Passing honors for the limited sprint feature went to Dean Chadd who came from the tail of the event to take the win. Most eyes were focused on Mike Chadd and Terry Thorson who were in close contention for the track title as Dean quietly picked his way through traffic to take a late race lead. The close order finish showed Mike Chadd second, Thorson third, Bob Thompson fourth and George Dickerson fifth. The runner-up finish for Mike Chadd in the event gave the Lincoln, Nebraska native the track title for the Limited Sprint division.
