Europe’s place in the world: Latest public opinion findings

Marietje Schaake (@MarietjeSchaake) has served as a Member of the for the Dutch Democratic Party (D66) with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) political group since 2009. She is the ALDE Coordinator on the International Trade committee and the spokesperson on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). She also serves on the committee on Foreign Affairs, where she focuses on strengthening Europe as a global player, and on the EU’s neighbourhood policy, notably Turkey, , North Africa and the broader Middle East. In the subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) she coordinates the monthly human rights resolutions for the European liberals. She has sought to include digital freedoms in EU foreign policy. Schaake is also Vice-President of the delegation for relations with the United States, a substitute member on the delegation for Iran, and serves in the delegation for the Arab peninsula. She has pushed for completing Europe’s digital single market and for copyright reform, and is strongly committed to an open internet in discussions about internet governance and digital (human) rights. She is the founder of the digital agenda caucus in European Parliament. In addition to her parliamentary work, Marietje Schaake is, amongst others, Member of the European Council on Foreign Relations, a Commissioner on the Global Commission on Internet Governance and a WEF Young Global Leader in the class of 2014. She serves as vice-president of the supervisory board of Free Press Unlimited.

James Bell is vice president of global strategy at Pew Research Center. He plays a leading role in guiding the international research undertaken by the Center. Bell helps to design survey projects, develop questionnaires, analyze data and write reports. Prior to joining the Pew Research Center, Bell worked at the U.S. State Department for nearly a decade, most recently as director of international opinion research. Bell earned his doctorate in geography from the University of Washington in Seattle. He is an author of The World’s Muslims: Unity and Diversity, Global Opinion of Obama Slips, International Policies Faulted, Russians Back Protests, Political Freedoms, Egyptians Remain Optimistic, Embrace Democracy and Religion in Political Life and Religion in Latin America. Bell has appeared on CNN and BBC World Service Radio, and has presented internationally, including at the U.N. Alliance of Civilizations annual conference. Danièle Réchard is Head of Global Trends Unit at EPRS. Having graduated from Sciences-Po Paris (Service Public) and with a Master of Laws from the Sorbonne, she has gathered experience in several fields of expertise both in the private sector and in the European Institutions (Social Affairs, Home and Justice Affairs, in particular migration issues, as well as Constitutional Affairs). In her present post at the European Parliament, she has set up the Global Trends Unit that focuses on following long-term global trends in order to analyse how these might affect the and policy- making in itself. The aim is to facilitate a common awareness within the European Parliament, other European Institutions and beyond, and to contribute to the European Strategy and Policy Analysis System (ESPAS), a high-level administrative dialogue between the European Institutions. Danièle has experience in teaching as a Maître de Conférence at the Sciences-Po Paris ("système et vie politiques de l'UE") and first-hand knowledge in migration issues having been a fellow at the University of Colorado.

Patryk Pawlak is a Policy Analyst at the European Parliamentary Research Service, External Policies Unit of the Members' Research Service where he deals with cybersecurity, counterterrorism, and EU's security and defence policy more broadly. Before joining the European Parliament, he was a Senior Analyst at the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) in Paris where in recent years he managed the activities of the EUISS Cyber Task Force and projects related to crisis and disaster response. During his career, Patryk has cooperated with numerous research institutions in Europe and in the United States. Patryk holds a PhD in Political Science from the European University Institute (Florence).
