Sinclair Tour and Travel 5494 5083 ’s Vivid – 4 days Departs Monday 3rd June $1999 p p twin share. Single $390

Day One. Monday 3rd June After pick up from your door as usual, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your flight to Sydney. We’ll be transferred to our Hotel – the IBIS – right in the centre of the VIVID magic. After check in, you have some free time to get your bearings before we head off on the start of our VIVD adventure. Vivid Sydney is an annual lights festival that illuminates the city with a dazzling spectacle of colour, music and creativity. It’s quite a marvel to witness the spectacular transformation of Sydney Harbour into a glittering haven of extravagant lights. As you can imagine, everything VIVID happens at night, so we’ve tailored our tour to include as many night time activities as it’s possible to walk!

We’ll walk to the ferry terminal for our early dinner VIVID cruise to enjoy premium views, photo opportunities galore and a drinks package and dinner. The light projections on the sails of the is one of Vivid’s most iconic events. This magnificent piece of architecture comes alive with the most amazing three-dimensional light displays and is guaranteed to take your breath away. After our 2 hour dinner cruise, we can turn our walk through Darling Harbour into a dream-like dive under the ocean with The Art-Meets- Technology water fountain, light and laser experience.

Oracle Liquid creates Fantastic Oceans, bringing to the surface of Cockle Bay a story from deep beneath the ocean, where bioluminescent creatures live. Water features come to life as jellyfish in a fantastic display of colour. Feature fountains emulate corals and deep sea flora and lasers ripple like ocean waves.

Another free light show happens at the Australian National Maritime Museum. Projected onto its iconic rooftop, BBC Earth and Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II takes us into the fascinating world beneath the waves. This spectacular projection guides us on a journey to the deep at the most crucial time in our ocean’s history. There is so much to see and do during VIVID, so take off any time you want to go exploring.

Skylark is a vast play of light stretching from the and to the outer areas of Sydney Harbour and incorporates interactive lighting of the bridge and Circular Quay skyscrapers. Titled Bradfield’s Beacon, the laser is positioned on top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge Now Bradfield’s Beacon with its full-colour laser beams reaches right around Sydney Harbour, resting on famous sites and moving from the inner harbour to its headlands. In addition to the beacon, Skylark has 40 interactive pillars of light located above the Overseas Passenger Terminal and Bennelong and controlled from a retro- control deck located near Pier 8. Every 30 minutes the beacon, skyscrapers, pillars of light and the bridge, combine to create a spectacular two-minute sky show. (D)

Day Two Tuesday 4th June. After a delicious buffet breakfast at our Hotel, you’re welcome to explore Sydney at your leisure. We plan to keep you busy at night time and leave you in peace during the day. We are so close to Sydney’s CBD, Paddy’s Markets and just a short ferry ride to Circular Quay, there are bound to be loads of things you’d like to do. But in the afternoon, we’re in for a real treat as we un-cover the stories, history and magic of the Sydney Opera House with an incredible guided tour, taking you underneath the world-famous sails. Fusing ancient and modernist influences, and situated on a site sacred to the Gadigal people for thousands of years, the sculptural elegance of the Sydney Opera House has made it one of the symbols of twentieth century architecture - a building that, to quote US architect Frank Gehry, “changed the image of an entire country.”

After our Opera House Tour, we’ll enjoy an early dinner on the edge of the stunning Sydney Harbour. Then we’ll take a short walk to the Royal Botanic Gardens where there are 22 fabulous light artworks to witness. Pass through the QE11 gates of the Garden and follow a pathway that weaves through an exciting nocturnal enviroment, revealing wonders created by artists and inspired by nature. You’ll see within the garden the colourful, turreted façade of Government House Sydney, which TAFE students have transformed with their own brand of brilliance. Just a few of the artworks are mentioned below. (BASED ON INFO FROM 2018)

He’e nalu is inspired by the art of surfing and delivers to all who experience it, the joyous sensation of riding a wave. The name of this mesmeric artwork derives from the Hawaiian word for the revered art of surfing, he’e nalu, which in English translates evocatively as ‘wave sliding’. The installation is formed by two walls of light-filled columns that create a passageway washed in changing shades of blue and orange, reflecting the colours of the ocean at different times of the day. Coastal sounds are bounced from wall to wall, creating the enclosed sense of a wave tunnel.

The Bloom is a giant, electric, metallic flower, its petals adorned with mirrored spirals that refract and reflect light in all directions. And there, at the centre of this shimmering beauty, is — you. The installation is almost five metres wide enabling visitors to enter to the very centre of the flower to pose for photos, framed by petals of light, their faces fully in bloom.

Aqueous is an interactive landscape of meandering pathways of light. Reflection and shifting colour and light react to audience participants as they run and walk along the pathway. The design of Aqueous is based on three different shaped modular platforms that connect like puzzle pieces in endless combinations of layouts.

The Nautilus Forest draws from both nature and precise geometry to create an illuminated forest of spiralling trees. The branches of the forest ripple and pulse with colour. Sometimes shooting off in independent patterns, sometimes rippling as one unified tree and sometimes sweeping magnificent hues of light across the whole forest. With more than 40,000 individually controlled RGB pixels at their disposal, the forest’s programmers can take full advantage of its intrinsic forms. Each of the 24 trees stands up to 4.5m tall; together they merge into a meandering forest that entices visitors to enter and perhaps lose themselves within.

This is just a taste of the exotic, the beautiful, the intriguing and the downright strange works of light that will lure you through the Garden. As you meander past the last of the colour, light and movement and find yourself out on Macquarie Street, you may ask yourself, “What just happened?” (B)(D)

Day Three Wednesday 5th June. Another day to explore on your own or get together with some others to explore the galleries, museums or shops. Late this afternoon, we’ll catch a ferry around to Circular Quay for our ferry ride to the Taronga Zoo. (The Zoo is not open to exhibit animals – just lights!) Here we’ll step inside a world of scientific discovery at Taronga Zoo’s Lights for the Wild (5.30pm entry), where we’ll find spectacular animal light sculptures. Walk through the mouth of a shark as it splashes through the façade of Taronga’s heritage entry building, to meet magnificent aquatic life. Next, tread quietly through the Sumatran jungle, finding rare and ferocious creatures along the way. Step into the Taronga Centenary Theatre and be immersed in cinematic light and sound spectacle, then grab a bite (own expense) at the Taronga Food Market beneath a canopy of stars and a glowing planet earth. You’ll love this inviting trail through an illuminated bushscape. Plenty of time to find some dinner (own expense). (B)
