Don Campbell – doncampbellmusic.com Don Campbell Music A national winner of the True Value/Colgate Country Showdown at the Grand Ole Opry and named Maine’s Best Singer-Songwriter from 2004-2009 in the Maine Sunday Telegram Readers’ Poll, Don Campbell and the Don Campbell Band & Trio entertain audiences of all ages with their charismatic blend of adult contemporary, country and rock music. With world- class vocals and boy-next-door charm, Don has opened for Willie Nelson, Toby Keith (Gillette Stadium), American Idol winner Carrie Underwood (Jeff Gordon Foundation Fundraiser), Randy Travis and many other country greats. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, Don’s fresh but familiar voice has taken him from his hometown of Scarborough, Maine to his second home in Nashville, Tennessee -- and well beyond. Averaging over 150 performances each year, Don has built a fan base and mailing list of over 9000 homes, and continues to grow his music and music business with his wife, bass player and marketing manager, Tonya Shevenell; and in the company of good friends and band members, Andy Happel, Sean Daniels and Sumner McKane. When speaking of songwriting influences, Don cites Dan Fogelberg, Vince Gill, the Beatles, the Celtic and Canadian Maritimes roots music of his family, and another fellow Maine native, writer Stephen King. “I strongly believe that Stephen King’s On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, should be required reading for any songwriter.     VOICES IN THE HALL: SAM BUSH (PART 1) EPISODE TRANSCRIPT PETER COOPER Welcome to Voices in the Hall, presented by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I’m Peter Cooper. Today’s guest is a pioneer of New-grass music, Sam Bush. SAM BUSH When I first started playing, my dad had these fiddle albums. And I loved to listen to them. And then realized that one of the things I liked about them was the sound of the fiddle and the mandolin playing in unison together. And that’s when it occurred to me that I was trying on the mandolin to note it like a fiddle player notes. Then I discovered Bluegrass and the great players like Bill Monroe of course. You can specifically trace Bluegrass music to the origins. That it was started by Bill Monroe after he and his brother had a duet of mandolin and guitar for so many years, the Monroe Brothers. And then when he started his band, we're just fortunate that he was from the state of Kentucky, the Bluegrass State. And that's why they called them The Bluegrass Boys. And lo and behold we got Bluegrass music out of it. PETER COOPER It’s Voices in the Hall, with Sam Bush. “Callin’ Baton Rouge” – New Grass Revival (Best Of / Capitol) PETER COOPER “Callin’ Baton Rouge," by the New Grass Revival. That song was a prime influence on Garth Brooks, who later recorded it. Now, New Grass Revival’s founding member, Sam Bush, is a mandolin revolutionary whose virtuosity and broad- minded approach to music has changed a bunch of things for the better.

One of the many misconception about country music is that its audience is strictly southern and rural; my northern urban working class family listened exclusively to country music. As a teenager I was was more interested in Motown than Nashville, but by the time I reached my early thirties I had became a serious country music fan.

Neal) The progressive country music movement developed in Austin, Texas, during the early 1970s as a community of liberal young musicians and concertgoers with strong interests in Texan country music traditions and contemporary rock music converged on the city. Children of the Cold War and the post-World War II migration to the suburbs, these “cosmic cowboys” sought to get back in touch with their rural roots and to leave behind the socially conservative world their parents had created for them. As a hybrid of country music and rock, progressive country music both encapsulated the contradictions of the cosmic cowboys in song and helped to create a musical sanctuary in which these youths could articulate their difference from mainstream Texan culture. Examining the work of the movement’s singer-songwriters (Michael Murphey, Guy Clark, Gary P. Nunn), western swing revivalists (Asleep at the Wheel, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys), and commercial country singers (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings), this dissertation explores the proliferation of stock imagery, landscape painting, and Texan stereotypes in progressive country music and their role in the construction of Austin’s difference.
