Exploring a Contextual Theology of Missio Dei for the Missiological Reconciliation of the Korean Protestant Church Abstract of TOWARD A THEOLOGY OF PAREO DEI : EXPLORING A CONTEXTUAL THEOLOGY OF MISSIO DEI FOR THE MISSIOLOGICAL RECONCILIATION OF THE KOREAN PROTESTANT CHURCH Musung Jung This study explores a contextual theology of missio Dei through filial piety that is termed pareo Dei , in Latin, ‘the obeying of God.’ The Korean Protestant church is missiologically polarized between progressives and conservatives in their reductionist approaches to God’s salvation and mission, which is decidedly related to the missio Dei concept that the former exclusively utilized in its minjung theological movement and the latter antagonistically labeled missional radicalism in its heaven-bound Great Commission mentality. With attention to the holistic vision of the original and biblical missio Dei , the researcher introduces a holistic missio Dei to the whole Korean Protestant church via theological contextualization, so that its age-old missiological polarity might be overcome. In the making of p areo Dei , Andrew Walls’ pilgrim and indigenous principle serves as the overarching conceptual framework, Stephen Bevans’ synthetic model as a primary typological framework, and Robert Schreiter’s nine-process map as a concrete navigational framework. The dissertation is comprised of six chapters with interdisciplinary approaches. Chapter 1 is a preliminary study of the contextual theological project, stating the research background, problem, and questions as well as its thesis and methodology. Historical studies of missio Dei are the focus of the next two chapters: its diachronic developments in the worldwide Protestant movements in chapter 2 and in the Korean Protestant church in chapter 3. This comparative research shows that the dissemination of a holistic missio Dei to the whole Korean Protestant church is a key to its missiological reconciliation and cooperation as in the case of the worldwide Protestant movements. What follows are theological and missiological studies. Chapter 4 is a theological examination of ‘authentic’ contextualization with specific reference to its meaning, models, and methods, while chapter 5 is a missiological investigation of pareo Dei in the hermeneutical linkages between missio Dei and filial piety. The dissertation concludes with the integrative summary and promising research recommendations in chapter 6. As a result of this self-theological exploration, pareo Dei is proposed as the supreme example of both missio Dei and filial piety. In pareo Dei , Jesus is the filial Son par excellence who inaugurates the ‘the-anthropocosmic’ Datong society in relational shalom. As the Incarnation of missio Dei , Jesus models the fivefold filial mission of worship, fellowship, discipleship, evangelism, and social action in absolute submission to his Father’s redemptive will and purpose. This pareo Dei mindset can lead to the Korean Protestant church’s missiological reconciliation, since the evangelistic Jesus is inseparable from the prophetic Jesus in his filial commitment to God’s mission to the world. This changed when the church entered into the Christendom era and church membership grew by birth, rather than by conversion, so there was no need for mission. The decline of numbers attending church services in recent years forced the church to look at mission and a number of church-centred models have developed. But in recent years there has been an awareness that mission is not the mission of the church. It is the missio Dei, the mission of God. In this thesis I have outlined the evolution of the concept of the missio Dei and its importance to the church. I have also given some examples of the way that the missio Dei has been put into action and the importance of listening to God when you are involved in it. This listening to God involves listening, individually and as a church, to God using prayer and Scripture. It also involves listening to God in the lives of the people in our neighbourhoods. Indeed, it is only natural for culture and hermeneutics to be in con- stant contention, and yet they are forever in each otherÕs company. They seem to claim the same level of authority for determining human behavior, so that while the believer may hold that God and His Word are everything, that very believer, as anthropologist or sociologist, knows that culture is everything. This is be- cause, despite our faith in the Holy Scriptures as authoritative, infallible, and prescriptive of conduct, no one has ever experienced Scripture outside of a hu- man social context. Nor do we here propose how that might be accomplished. Neither do we explore that ample specialty known as cultural hermeneutics.1 Rather, this paper examines the relationship between sound biblical hermeneu- tics and societal norms of conduct in the hope of demonstrating how salvific outcomes are possible from the interaction of the two. It attempts to show how a valid interpretation of GodÕs Word may be accessed and effectively transmitted across cultures. These attempts are often gathered under a single descriptive heading: missio Dei. This term and the conceptual framework attached to it, often (apparently erroneously) traced back to Karl Barth,1 describes the fundamental conviction that unites all these recent projects. In Transforming Mission, a foundational text for both strands of biblical and theological reflection upon mission, David Bosch describes the conviction in this way: “Mission was understood as being derived from the very nature of God. It was thus put in the context of the doctrine of the Trinity, not of ecclesiology or soteriology.     255 JOHN CORRIE Transforming Anglicanism: Elements of an Emerging Anglican Mission Paradigm Few would question that Anglicanism is undergoing significant change at present but often this is not interpreted in a missional framework. John Corrie here offers such an approach to Anglican identity, arguing that we need to see beyond current conflicts to discern an emerging missional paradigm. He argues that this paradigm will be crucial for future Anglican unity and provide an approach to mission that is integral, sacramental and Trinitarian. Introduction You don’t need to be a missiologist to recognise my take on David Bosch’s Transforming Mission in the title of this article. The point of this echo is that I want to suggest that Anglicanism needs a new paradigm for its identity if it is to survive even to halfway through this century, and that that new paradigm needs to be missional. If a new paradigm is to emerge from out of the current crisis in Anglicanism then, as Bosch suggested was the case for his own thesis, it must have significant roots in the history of the tradition. The resources for renewed identity are, in other words, already there within Anglicanism. Bosch’s paradigm built upon six phases of Christian history identified by Hans Küng, taking from each of them what was of abiding significance and incorporating those elements into his own vision. Anglicanism needs to do something similar. It cannot deny its traditions and its history, but it has got stuck in an institutional and conflictual paradigm from which it can only be released by the transforming vision of mission.

David J. Bosch is Profes- sor of Missiology at the University of South Africa (Pretoria) and many publi- cations bear witness to his scholarship: Die Heidenmission in der Zukunfts- schau Jesu (1959), A Spirituality of the Road (1979), Witness to the World: The Christian Mission in Theological Perspective (1980), The Church as Alternative Community (1982), Mission in Creative Tension: A Dialogue with David Bosch (1990), etc. The author is aware of the escalation in the use of the word "mission" in recent times and the concomitant insecurity which the ambivalent under- standings of mission engender. He has no intention of restricting himself to one of the many "definitions" that may obstruct the view for an unprejudiced scrutiny of the "paradigms" of history. But in every phase of the book one thing is crystal clear: the Christian faith is missionary by its very nature; it is meant for all people; it is concerned with other-worldly and this-worldly salvation; the Church is both "sacrament and sign": sign in the sense of "pointer, symbol, example or model", sacrament in the sense of "mediation, representation, or anticipation" (p. 11). A thought which meanders like a golden thread through the whole book is that the "mission" of the Church cannot be detached from the "missio Dei," that mission belongs to the essence of the Church, as lasting concern and task of the Church inseparable from it.

The Study is an elucidation of a double gospel emerging out of the Indian culture: on the one hand we have the. gospel of inter-religious interaction and the consequent composite culture of India and on the other, there is the gospel of God in Jesus arising out of the Indian hermeneutical context, which only mutually ratify one another. Culture denotes all the capabilities and habits acquired by human person as a member of a particular society, such as knowledge, belief, art, law, customs ek It is the whole way of life, material, intellectual and spiritual. It describes the way human beings think, feel, believe ·and behave. Culture is a comprehensive term and includes the following: (i) patterns and modes of external behaviour; (ii) the productive level of agriculture, industry, services and information, (iii) the social level of political economy or power ,. relations among human beings; and (iv) basic postures, values, beliefs, world views, which form the foundations of a culture and which find expression in art, music, literature, philosophy and religion. 1. The Research Problem . Historically, India has been one of the greatest confluences of different cultural strands. The composite culture of India is a product of borrowing, sharing and fusing through processes of interaction between two or more streams and such cultural symbiosis has given birth to greater vitality and larger acceptability.
