PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

It seems that the 2007 year has come to a pass in a hurry – the years seem to be passing by faster than ever. You wonder where the time has gone and how it can be that time of year to reflect on the achievements and what has occurred during the past 12 months. And there have been significant achievements with the Centre’s representative teams finishing a commendable 4th at both Wanganui for the U.17’s and for the U.15’s. Congratulations to the teams, their coaches, managers and supporters.

Another key achievement was the redevelopment of the Pavilion’s kitchen area. The kitchen was certainly past it use by date and we are immensely grateful to the support of Community Trust in making available the funds to undertake the redevelopment. It is now a wonderful facility available to the organisation and its supporters and we would encourage you to make the most of the space and the facilities.

We also finally received confirmation about the indoor venue and the Cobham Park site has been confirmed with consultation well under way in making this happen. We will not benefit from the facility until 2009 at the earliest but at least it is a commitment the City has given to our sport and others. We will be extremely grateful to provide an environment that allows our players to perform at their best, without having to manage the vagaries of the climate. I am sure however that many of the players and officials will miss the extra challenges posed by the southerlies that blow through our fair city.

We have seen the end of the National Bank Cup, which has had a major impact on a number of our players and our competition over recent years. I was thrilled to see that our Premier 1 competition was greatly buoyed by the return of those players for the finals and congratulations are extended to Wellington East for their success in the 2007 final. Congratulations are also extended to those players and officials who were recognised for their efforts at higher levels during the year and we wish you all the best in continuing those fine efforts.

The finances for the year show a large profit derived predominantly from the NZCT grant used to renovate the kitchen. Consequently our operating position is masked somewhat by that. We do need to tighten our belts in the upcoming 12 months to weather some financial storm clouds on the horizon, but netballers tend to be resilient and I am very sure we will come through the tight financial times ahead. Issues we need to be aware of are our reliance upon grant funding to support the organisation and we need to look to create a wider financial base to support the organisation. This is something the Board is giving significant thought and time to.

2 TOP PERFORMANCE - DYNAMIC- LEADING THE WAY – UNITY - FUN

I would once again like to thank our significant contributors for the year being New Zealand Community Trust, Lion Foundation, Professionals Gillies & Mark Real Estate, New World (Wellington City) and Williams and Adams. Your ongoing commitment to the organisation is invaluable and we do appreciate your contribution to the organisation.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the staff for their dedication and long hours during the year. I would also like to farewell Raewyn Penman, our Chief Executive for the past two years, and wish her all the best for the foreseeable future locating in the South Island.

Paulette O’Reilly President

NETBALL OPERATIONS

The 2007 season has been one of growth and success in many areas of our operations. The number of senior teams competing in our competition has grown, our umpire numbers have escalated, our Twilight numbers have more than doubled for the current league, and the number of trialists for the U17 representative teams have increased.

This growth shows the popularity of netball as a sport and the satisfaction that teams players and umpires have from being involved in our Centre. While it is impossible to please everybody all the time, Netball Wellington Centre seems to be attracting and retaining participants by providing positive experiences.

Netball Wellington Centre has seen success in both the U15 and U17 representative tournaments. The top teams in each age group took fourth place at their respective tournaments. The second U15 team demonstrated the Centres depth at this age group by finishing in the top 10. Congratulations to all the players, coaches, managers and umpires involved in the representative programme. I look forward to the continued improvement and even greater success of these teams in the future.

The key to improving the performance of Wellington at the top level is the development at the junior level and of our coaches. The Centre offers a comprehensive range of junior programmes overseen by Kylie Summers. These programmes are of a high quality and are well supported. They have the dual advantage of developing our young players and providing a source of income for the Centre.

3 TOP PERFORMANCE - DYNAMIC- LEADING THE WAY – UNITY - FUN

The coaching programmes run through the Centre are assisting the long term improvement for coaches and through them players. Over the last two years the newly developed sessions for Junior Coaches have been attended by over 120 coaches each time. These sessions have given beginning coaches the opportunity to have advice and support from top coaches Jill McIntosh and Ivy Topping.

Coaching at the college level is a concern and an area that needs to be addressed in the future. It is important that the basics of the game are well established at this age group and to do this experienced, qualified coaches are required from year 9 on. This is an area the Centre attends to address in upcoming seasons.

The winter competition is the main focus of the Centre operations. This season the new sponsorship from the Professionals gillies & mark real estate of the Premier grades and the Premier 1 finals added to the season’s success. The Premier 1 finals were an exciting event that incorporated the College A final and the play-off for third and fourth in Premier 1.

All clubs benefited from the increased number of umpires, the assistance of the Fair Play Promoters, not having to register, the ability to collect player/umpire cards prior to playing, and the improved café facilities. Hopefully these improvements will continue into the future.

Over the past two years I have had the opportunity to meet many of our members and have appreciated the support, encouragement and positive feedback from players, clubs and staff. To those I haven’t had a chance to talk to personally many thanks and all the best for the future. A special thank you to the staff; Frances Solia, Kylie Summers, Kerry Sipthorpe, Marian Daals, Sue Grebby, and Kerryn Greaves who give a lot of themselves to ensure netball is a great experience for all.

FACILITY DEVELOPMENT

Netball Wellington Centre Pavilion This season has seen the refurbishment and upgrading of the kitchen area. This has made a huge difference to the Pavilion and has increased its value in monetary terms as well as in the ability to provide a higher range of services to netball participants.

Wellington Indoor Community Sports Centre Over the last year the venue for this development has been confirmed as Cobham Park. While there were a number of advantages to the other proposed site opposite the Westpac Stadium, the cost of developing this site and the smaller number of courts, resulted in the Cobham Park site being chosen.

The architects have been contracted and have almost finalised the plan for the building. The 12 wooden indoor courts, a range of changing facilities, control areas, car parking and café will make this a superb venue to play netball. The target is for the construction to be finished in time for the 2010 season.

5 TOP PERFORMANCE - DYNAMIC- LEADING THE WAY – UNITY - FUN

SPONSORSHIP/ FUNDING NZ Community Trust NZ Community Trust has continued to be our major funder for the 2007 season. The Trust provided funding of $113,611.25 towards the costs of the delivery of development programmes, the running of the winter competition, representative team and umpire uniforms, and equipment. We were also granted $100,000 to enable the Pavilion kitchen to be upgraded.

The Premier competition and the Premier 1 Trophy are named for the Trust in recognition of the funds received. New Zealand Community Trust also assisted us with a grant for the hire of Queens Wharf Events Centre for the Premier 1 final.

We thank Tony Gill from the Trust who has supported netball again throughout 2007. New Zealand Community Trust is the largest funding provider of sports bodies and we appreciate its support, not only of our organisation but our clubs and affiliates as well. Wellington City New World Wellington City New World and Netball Wellington Centre have now worked together for ten years.

The winners of the Wellington City New World Awards were: Club Administrator Sam Hannah – Wellington East Netball Club Team Award Wellington East 9

We extend a big thank you to Bruce McLauchlan and his business partners for their continued support of club netball and the two special awards.

the Professionals gillies & mark real estate The Professional gillies & mark real estate sponsored the centre for the first time this season. They became the naming rights sponsor of the Premier. Premier Reserve grades and the Premier 1 Final. They are also the naming rights sponsor of the Twilight netball leagues. This partnership has already benefited the Centre with increased media profiles and we look forward to expanded and developing our relationship with gillies and mark real estate in the future.

6 TOP PERFORMANCE - DYNAMIC- LEADING THE WAY – UNITY - FUN

Williams & Adams Williams & Adams Holden is another of our long-term sponsors who have made an invaluable contribution to netball in Wellington. Williams and Adams provide two Holden cars for use by the staff. The availability of the cars is a considerable saving for Netball Wellington and we are pleased to be able to give a good profile to the company with distinctive signage on the cars and through our web-site and publications.

A number of other companies supported netball this year and we would like to thank them for their support.

Kilbirnie Sports plays an important role with the umpires group providing drink bottles and vouchers to this group as well as discounts to members and the Centre. Kitchen’Things provided the superb SMEG oven and microwave for the new kitchen and Radioworks have enabled us to advertise our services more widely as well as added some colour to our Saturdays with the promotions from the MORE FM van.

Grants In 2006 Netball Wellington Centre was supported with grants from the Trusts that distribute money from the Gaming Funds. These funds have become increasingly important in the development of our organisation and our sport.

 NZ Community Trust – Netball Development Officers, Administration Officer, Fair Play Promoters, Registration staff, and Cleaner salaries as well as court hire and St Johns Ambulance fees were covered by these grants this year.

 Lion Foundation – Contribution towards the Centre Manager salary.

 The Southern Trust Inc – U17 representative team accomodation

 Unison Trust – Printing of the competition handbook

 The Trusts Charitable Trust – U15 and U17 representative team travel

 Trust House Charitable Trust – U15 representative team accommodation

 Caversham Foundation – Junior Umpires uniforms

 Pelorus Trust – Umpire shirts and sweatshirts.

Our sponsors are vital to Netball Wellington. We encourage all players and supporters to take up the opportunities offered by the sponsors, and show you appreciate their participation in our game. 7 TOP PERFORMANCE - DYNAMIC- LEADING THE WAY – UNITY - FUN

NETBALL NEW ZEALAND

Board members Paulette O’Reilly, and Janice Coldicott along with staff Raewyn Penman represented Netball Wellington Centre at the Council Meeting held in Hamilton in February. The AGM was held on Sunday and Saturday was devoted to workshops on a range of topics relevant to Boards of Netball Centres and Regions. This year one elected position became vacant on the NNZ Board with the end of the term for Karen Brown. Karen stood and was once again the successful candidate for the position.

CLUB COMPETITION

It was great to be able to roll out the 10 minute quarters to Senior and College teams this season. Netball is no longer a game of halves and all players, coaches and umpires are benefiting from playing the modern version of the game.

This has been the second season under the new format decided upon in 2004/05 season. There have been some concerns with this format which are being addressed with clubs over the off season. This will result in some minor changes to the format for the 2008 season and the implementation of any major changes in the 2009 season.

The Premier 1 competition provided some closely fought games this season with the semi-finalists not being decided until the completion of the final round. Wellington East Red built strength all season and were clear final contenders from mid-season. PIC Black and PIC Green continued to demonstrate the depth at the elite level in this club, maintaining top four status throughout the round robin. The tussle for top four and a semi-final position between Just Paterson SMOG 1 and Just Paterson SMOG 2 made every game of the last round vital. SMOG 1 edged out SMOG 2 to take the fourth spot in the semis and ended the competition in fourth place.

The Professionals gillies & mark real estate Premier 1 champions for 2007 are Wellington East Red. PIC Black were runners up with PIC Green finishing in third place.

The College A team competition was held towards the end of the season with the final running as the curtain raiser to the Premier 1 final. This year it was contested by Wellington Girls College and Wellington East Girls College. Reversing the outcome of last year’s final Wellington East continued their strong season performances and won the final.

NETBALL DEVELOPMENT

Netball Development Officer – Junior Programmes; Kylie Summers

After School Programme We implemented the After School Programme in the first term this year. We had a total of 35 participants over 6 weeks, which was run at the Hataitai Courts as well as St Bernard’s Primary School in Brooklyn. This programme was a great way to introduce Fun Ferns to Year 3 & 4 participants and it was great to have St Bernard’s School working with us. Again this programme is very popular with the Year 5 & 6 age group.

Holiday Programme The Holiday Programme was run in the April, July and September Holidays this year. The April Programme was our most popular programme with a total of 167 children participating. However, both the July and September programmes were well attended both with 67 participants. This year we added the September programme and introduced the World Champs into the format. Each group represented a country and after two days of skills and drills they participated in a mini World Champs of their own. All of the Holiday Programmes attracted wet weather, but were still very successful. Thank you to the coaches who helped with these programmes. A big thank you to Raewyn for organising the new Activitiy Books and Bags.

Coaching in Schools This year we introduced a new programme offered to schools utilizing Sala Hide’s shooting skills. This programme and was very well received within the schools, we had a total of 10 schools participate this year and we will definitely look to continue this Shooting format for next season. We also had 10 schools utilize the Coaching in Schools programme. Thank you to Neil Hargraves for coaching in most of these schools. We are currently looking at the structure of the programme such as content and times. We are looking forward to new and exciting developments for next year.

Junior Academy We had a great response to the Questionnaire that was circulated last year and from this we have now expanded the Academy to include sessions in the Northern Suburbs. We started the year with an Introductory session for all Satellite Year 8 Rep players which was a great success and a very good opportunity to see our great young talent coming through. We also offered Scholarships which was very well received. We also changed the format of the Academy from a 9 week block to 6 weeks to maintain interest and provide consistent skills. The Academy numbers were once again fantastic for the first term with 117 participants working at Hataitai Courts and Churton Park School. Term 2 and 3 had a total of 78 and 45 participants and

16 TOP PERFORMANCE - DYNAMIC- LEADING THE WAY – UNITY - FUN

these sessions were run at the Chinese Cultural Stadium and Johnsonville School. In term 3 we were more flexible and started a group at Wadestown School. All of these modifications were very successful and we will implement these once again next year. A huge thank you to both Neil Hargreaves and Sue Beckford who were outstanding with their coaching performances in this programme.

ASB FunFerns In November 2006 we worked closely with Holy Cross School in Miramar with their junior syndicate. They set up a 6 week programme run in the lunch hour. The programme was run by three fantastic and enthusiastic mothers who did exceptionally well. The FunFerns programme is specifically designed with participation, ball skills and fun as the key ingredients to introduce netball to young children. Congratulations to Holy Cross School for encouraging and running a very successful programme.

College In 2007 80 players were identified excluding the U17 and U15 representative squad players. Of the 80, a great response back with over 50 players agreeing to participate in the programme, many of the players in the past have come back for either a 2nd or 3rd time which is great, it does highlight the programme is working as our talent spotters are neutral in their selection.

The programme will kick off in February 2008 for 6 weeks addressing basic fundamentals and fitness levels.

U15 and U17 rep squads will have a 4 week programme that will be slightly more advanced and intense than the Talent ID group.

Year 8 2007 rep players are also running 3 sessions late November to brush up on their skills to give them a small insight of what the U15 rep players concentrate on.

REPRESENTATIVE NETBALL

This season the Centre was represented at all representative tournaments by 2 teams at the Under 17 level and 2 at the U15 level. These teams produced good results during the season. The performance of both of the Under 15 teams is again noteworthy and the future looks bright as these players move through the age groups to join with our experienced U17 players. The U17 teams showed improvement this season with the U17 Black team finished in fourth place at the North Island Tournament in Wanganui.

COACH DEVELOPMENT

Netball Development Officer - Frances Solia

UMPIRES

Umpire Training Co-ordinator - Marian Daals

2007 has been another very busy and successful year. We are fortunate to have a strong group of umpires who have been involved in organizing, training and supporting the Umpires’ Programme. The Umpires have contributed to Saturday Netball and worked throughout the season to tutor, coach and observe other umpires.

Many thanks to those who led Theory and Practical classes as well as participating in pre-season training: Sarah Littler, who was also leader of our Netball Wellington Centre Umpires Panel; Sue Geale, who was also leader of the Netball Wellington Region Umpires Panel, Jacqui Stewart, Rick McMillen, Kerryn Greaves, Deborah Tonkin, Mark Weatherall, Kaylene MacNee, Pauline Walker, Marian Daals and Ann Hay.

Umpire training can now start at an early age with many taking up the sport through the Kiwi Whistler and Junior College Group programmes. Many thanks go to Kerryn Greaves for the training of Kiwi Whistlers at Northern Suburbs and Wellington West Junior Netball competitions, and, with Marian Daals for the coordinating and training of the Junior College Umpires at the Centre.

We are lucky to have a number of Regional and New Zealand Umpires who are on Netball Wellington Region and Netball New Zealand Wgtn Umpires Panels and have contributed to the coaching of umpires, unqualified to elite levels of umpiring. Thank you for supporting and passing on your knowledge to improve the skills of our Centre Umpires.

Thank you to all Umpires for your commitment in making the task of putting umpires to the draw a much more smooth process this year. Thank you to Ann Hay for her assistance organizing and appointing umpires to the Premier Draw.

Without these people, the successes achieved would not be possible.

We have 61 registered umpires who participated in the 2007 netball season. We have 10 junior college umpires who were part of the 2007 Junior Umpires Group. We have 13 non active umpires who have taken the year off.

Parent Umpire Training 2007

The Western Suburbs were very well organised with the umpire training they put in place. The first session was a refresher for those who had attended previous courses but just wanted to go over the rules and get some more practical assistance. Thanks to Mark Weatherall for his assistance we were able to run behind the parents and offer them guidance with their calls and positioning.

The second session was aimed at beginners. Again well attended and lots of questions asked. We were also able to run a practical session for them which gave them confidence about blowing the whistle and making the calls.

The feedback was extremely positive. It is nice to offer the parents support and guidance as many feel totally inadequate when faced with having to umpire their children’s games.

This support given to the satellites by Netball Wellington is invaluable and needs to remain an intregal part of umpire training. As we have seen by some of the parents from Northern Suburbs who are now umpiring at Hataitai and keen to progress through the umpire pathway. Northen Suburbs parent training was run by Louana Williams and Motu Kairangi by Marion Daals.

KIWI WHISTLER REPORT This year saw a very enthusiastic turn out of Kiwi Whistlers. Northern Suburbs had 14 paticipants and Western (Karori Satellite) ran 2 groups of 12 girls. One of the nice things about the Northern group was that the parents who were mentoring came to the classes as well so they could learn the rules alongside their children. There were 2 boys in the group from Northern this year which was wonderful. This programme is very rewarding to run and is well supported by the satellites. The coordinators do a splendid job of getting the group together, arranging the venues and, once the theory is completed, getting the youngsters onto the draw. There is the odd teething problem once the KW’s take the court but in most cases they are well received and supported by the coaches and the parents. In some cases as what happened in Western satellite the first group of KW’s were asked to continue umpiring for the rest of the season after they had completed their 6 week practical. With the help of the coordinators I have a list of last years KW’s who spent this season umpiring in their satellite competition to gain more experience and confidence to bring into the Hataitai competition next year as young developing umpires. Each participant is awarded a certificate of achievement at the end of the season. I would like to look at the possibility of presenting a badge as well next year. Below is a photo of the Western KW’s in their Netball Wellington KW bibs. These make them easily identified on the court and help people on the sideline recognise that they are in training.
