Ennis Cathedral: The Building & Its People. Saturday 29th. August 2009 Presented by the Clare Roots Society Clare Roots Society The Clare Roots Society, brainchild of Ennisman Larry Brennan, was formed in April 2006 as an amateur family history group. The Society meets once a month in Ennis, and has approx. 50 members. Anyone with an interest in tracing their family tree is welcome to join. Some members are experienced genealogists while others are novices in the field. In addition to local members, we have some 'virtual' members who live overseas, but who follow our activities via email, and dream that they are in Clare. Activities are advertised in local press and in the Ennis Cathedral church bulletin. Under the Chairmanship of Declan Barron and his committee of Fiona de Buitleir, Eric Shaw, Larry Brennan & Paddy Waldron, guest speakers were arranged at past meetings including Paul O’Donnell of the South Galway genealogy group, Peter Beirne of 'The Manse' Local Studies library in Ennis, Jim Herlihy on the RIC, Liam Curran on Irish Soldiers in the British Army, Jonny Dillon of the Folklore Dept., UCD, and Dr. Pat Nugent of the University of Liverpool amongst others. From our own members, speakers have included Dr. Paddy Waldron, Gerry Kennedy, Ger Madden, Declan Barron, Eric Shaw, Robert Cullen, and Larry Brennan. In addition, we have run a number of hands-on computer workshops on genealogical research and the recording of data. The society works in partnership with Clare County Library in order to add to the wonderful fund of genealogy information already available on their website www.clarelibrary.ie Our biggest project to date, completed in 2008 with the assistance of a grant from the Heritage Council of Ireland, involved transcription of the gravestones in the old Drumcliffe Cemetery. -
Hector Berlioz Harold in Italy, Op. 16
PROGRAM NOTES by Phillip Huscher Hector Berlioz Born December 11, 1803, Côte-Saint-André, France. Died March 8, 1869, Paris, France. Harold in Italy, Op. 16 Berlioz composed Harold in Italy in 1834. The first performance was given on November 23 of that year in Paris. The score calls for solo viola and an orchestra consisting of two flutes and piccolo, two oboes and english horn, two clarinets, four bassoons, four horns, two cornets and two trumpets, three trombones and tuba, timpani, snare drum, triangle, cymbals, harp, and strings. Performance time is approximately forty-two minutes. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra's first performances of Berlioz's Harold in Italy were given on subscription concerts at the Auditorium Theatre on March 11 and 12, 1892 with August Junker as soloist and Theodore Thomas conducting. At one of the first performances of his blockbuster Symphonie fantastique, Hector Berlioz noticed that a man stayed behind in the empty concert hall after the ovations had ended and the musicians were packing up to go home. He was, as Berlioz recalls in his Memoirs, "a man with long hair and piercing eyes and a strange, ravaged countenance, a creature haunted by genius, a Titan among giants, whom I had never seen before, the first sight of whom stirred me to the depths." The man stopped Berlioz in the hallway, grabbed his hand, and "uttered glowing eulogies that thrilled and moved me to the depths. It was Paganini." Paganini, is, of course, Italian-born Nicolò Paganini, among the first of music's one-name sensations. In 1833, the year he met Berlioz, Paganini was one of music's greatest celebrities, known for the almost superhuman virtuosity of his violin playing as well as his charismatic, commanding presence. -

Clive Brown Although the title of this book may suggest a comprehensive study of nineteenth- century conducting, it in fact contains a collection of eighteen essays by different au- thors, offering a series of highlights rather than a broad and connected picture. The collection arises from an international conference in La Spezia, Italy in 2011, one of a series of enterprising and stimulating annual conferences focusing on aspects of nineteenth-century music that has been supported by the Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini (Lucca), in this case in collaboration with the Società di Concerti della Spezia and the Palazzetto Bru Zane Centre de musique romantique française (Venice). -

Music and Ideas from Mozart to the Jazz Age Spring, 2016 Professor James H. Johnson Department of History, Rm. #403 Office Hours: Monday, Wednesday 3:00-5:00, Thursday 12:30-2:00 and by appointment 226 Bay State Road [email protected] Music and Ideas from Mozart to the Jazz Age is a senior-level seminar focusing on understanding music in its historical and cultural context. Masterworks of the repertoire from the eighteenth century to jazz of the 1950s are at the center of the course, and their musical and textual features will receive significant attention. The political and intellectual climate, dynamics of patronage, composition and expectations of audiences, and changing social status of the artist will be considered in understanding the creation, performance, and reception of music. Critical musical essays and works of literature and philosophy from the period will illuminate each work’s intellectual setting, and recent historical and musicological scholarship will provide a range of approaches for understanding music in context. Historical approaches will draw from methods now employed in cultural and intellectual history. Familiarity with classical music (or a willingness to discover it) is strongly recommended for those wishing to take the course. The ability to read music is not required but will be advantageous. EMILY GLOVER, NCS VIOLIN Le Corsaire Overture, Op. 21 HECTOR BERLIOZ BORN December 11, 1803, in Côte-Saint-André, France; died March 8, 1869, in Paris PREMIERE Composed 1844, revised before 1852; first performance January 19, 1845, in Paris, conducted by the composer OVERVIEW The Random House Dictionary defines “corsair” both as “a pirate” and as “a ship used for piracy.” Berlioz encountered one of the former on a wild, stormy sea voyage in 1831 from Marseilles to Livorno, on his way to install himself in Rome as winner of the Prix de Rome. The grizzled old buccaneer claimed to be a Venetian seaman who had piloted the ship of Lord Byron during the poet’s adventures in the Adriatic and the Greek archipelago, and his fantastic tales helped the young composer keep his mind off the danger aboard the tossing vessel. They landed safely, but the experience of that storm and the image of Lord Byron painted by the corsair stayed with him. When Berlioz arrived in Rome, he immersed himself in Byron’s poem The Corsair, reading much of it in, of all places, St. Peter’s Basilica. “During the fierce summer heat I spent whole days there ... drinking in that burning poetry,” he wrote in his Memoirs. It was also at that time that word reached him that his fiancée in Paris, Camile Moke, had thrown him over in favor of another suitor. -

Shortlisted in The Australian/Vogel Literary award in 1998, Salt Letters was published by Allen & Unwin in 1999. It was subsequently published by W.W. Norton, New York and translated into Italian and German. Christine has a PhD in Creative Writing from Melbourne University and teaches in the MA Creative Writing Program at RMIT. On writing Ophelia’s Fan—Christine Balint Ophelia’s Fan began with my own experience of hearing Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique along with its rarely performed sequel Lélio or The Return to Life. Both of these orchestral works by the Romantic French composer were inspired by the Irish Shakespearean actress Harriet Smithson. Seeing her on stage in Paris in 1827, Berlioz fell in love. I sat in the audience in Melbourne watching an actor playing a young Romantic artist with long hair, lolling about on the grand piano and raving about Ophelia, Juliet, and Shakespeare. As I listened, I began to wonder what it would be like to be Harriet, hearing the work she inspired for the first time. The subject of Harriet and Berlioz and the symphony is rich with possibility. It has allowed me to work with many subjects that have interested me for some time: music, Shakespeare, theatre, and nineteenth-century history. The research process took me from the Bishop’s Palace in Ennis, County Clare, to the Freemason’s records in Dublin, to the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. -

Joseph summer’s The Shakespeare Concerts Series 2 TheFairOphelia Joseph summer’s The Shakespeare Concerts Series The Fair Ophelia is the second offering in Navona’s THE SHAKESPEARE CONCERTS SERIES, consisting of diverse settings of Ophelia’s mad scene and Gertrude’s reflection on Ophelia’s death from Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by Berlioz, Brahms, Schumann, Saint-Saëns, Strauss, Cage, and Summer. The parallax views of Ophelia experienced by the composers present the listener with an unusual opportunity to hear Ophelia in a three dimensional perspective. Is this tragic Shakespearean maiden mad because she’s angry with those characters who inhabit her world, or should we be angry with those characters who inhibit her predilections, and thus have made mad the hapless heroine? The next offering in Navona’s THE SHAKESPEARE CONCERTS SERIES is GODDESSES, featuring The Tempest’s three goddesses: Juno, Ceres, and Iris in a setting of Honour, Riches, Marriage-Blessing by Joseph Summer. Other highlights are Andrea Chenoweth singing Ariel songs by Thomas Linley accompanied by Massachusetts’ renowned period ensemble, Arcadia Players, under the direction of Ian Watson; mezzo-soprano Kellie Van Horn performing Shall I compare Thee To A Summer’s Day with Jessica Lizak on flute; and In The Old Age Black Was Not Counted Fair with tenor Luke Grooms, baritone Paul Soper, and Clark Matthews on French horn. 2 Program Notes BY JOSEPH SUMMER 3 Introduction There being a myriad of interpretations of the character of Ophelia from Shakespeare’sThe Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Den- mark, when it was time for me to create program notes for the 2012 concert, it seemed to me that like the program itself, within which seven composers’ interpretations were realized, the program books should reflect this diversity; ergo, instead of creating a singular template from which every copy would be manufactured, I drew up many different versions. -

Composers of serious orchestral music have not only disregarded the saxophone but have actually developed an aversion to the instrument, despite the fact that it was created at a time when the orchestra was expanding at its most rapid pace.
