We are investing in design principles and natural user interfaces that help individuals of all abilities,1 and innovating in touch, gesture, and speech recognition that can be used to improve communications services available to people with disabilities. Some of our innovations were not designed exclusively for accessibility, such as the work we’ve done on the Windows touch interface, or Bing’s voice-activated search for our Windows Phone digital personal assistant Cortana. Other innovation is focused on helping people with disabilities, such as Microsoft’s partnership with the UK non-profit “Guide Dogs for the Blind” to enable better independent mobility, which we discuss below. In implementing the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010 (“CVAA”), the Commission has left space for such innovation to occur by avoiding overly prescriptive regulations and setting reasonable compliance deadlines that provide industry time to research break-through solutions. As the language rapidly gains popularity in industry, tools made for C# development fo- cus on the professional programmer, while leaving the beginning computer science student behind. To address this problem, we introduce Dr. C#, a simple lightweight develop- ment environment with an integrated, interactive Read-Eval-Print-Loop (REPL). Dr. C# helps flatten the learning curve of both the environment and the language, enabling students to quickly learn key elements of the language and focus more easily on concepts. Dr. C# thus serves not only as a learning tool for beginner students but also as a teaching tool for instructors. The editor is based on an open source IDE called SharpDevelop. This thesis describes the implementation of Dr. C# focusing primarily on building the REPL and integrating with SharpDevelop. How to set up Cortana (or remove her) in Windows 10 Cortana, the personal digital assistant feature in Windows 10, will help you complete tasks, make it to your appointments on time, send messages and emails on your behalf, research the web and even launch applications. Orignally released with the Windows Phone (and named after the AI character from Microsoft's Halo franchise, looks to be a key element in the Windows 10 operating system. To begin the set up process, click or tap the microphone icon in the search bar and say "Hey Cortana" (if listening is enabled), followed by your question or search term. When properly set up Cortana is a powerful digital assistant. Start by clicking into the Cortana search box, and waiting for the results pane to appear. In the top- left corner of this, click the “hamburger” menu and then open Notebook. This tool allows you to determine what information Cortana can gather about you, and the more data she has, the more she can do. Cortana will have already asked you to input your name, but you can change this and more by opening About Me. Here, set the name you want her to use. Under Settings you can enable tracking info by switching on Find flights and more, which analyses your emails for such details. The Settings screen also enables you to toggle whether Cortana responds to “Hey, Cortana” which is very similar to Android’s “OK, Google“–the system will constantly be on the look-out for you saying this phrase, and will open Cortana when it is detected. -

Investigating the Feasibility of an MPI-like Library Implemented in .Net Using Only Fully Managed Code Daniel Holmes MSc in High Performance Computing The University of Edinburgh Year of Presentation: 2007 Abstract The .Net development platform and the C# language, in particular, offer many benefits to programmers including increased productivity, security, reliability and robustness, as well as standards-based application portability and cross-language inter-operation. The Message Passing Interface (MPI) is a standardised high performance computing paradigm with efficient, frequently-used implementations in many popular languages. A partial implementation of McMPI, the first MPI-like library to be targeted at .Net and written in pure C#, is presented. It is sufficiently complete to demonstrate typical application code and to evaluate relative performance. Although the effective bandwidth for large messages (over 100 Kbytes) using 100Mbit/s Ethernet is good, the overheads introduced by .Net remoting and object serialisation are shown to result in high latency and to limit bandwidth to 166Mbit/s when using a 1Gbit/s Ethernet interconnection. Interface evolution via virtual extension methods Brian Goetz Fourth draft, June 2011 1. Problem statement Once published, it is impossible to add methods to an interface without breaking existing implementations. (Specifically, adding a method to an interface is not a source- compatible change.) The longer the time since a library has been published, the more likely it is that this restriction will cause grief for its maintainers. The addition of closures to the Java language in JDK 7 place additional stress on the aging Collection interfaces; one of the most significant benefits of closures is that it enables the development of more powerful libraries. It would be disappointing to add a language feature that enables better libraries while at the same time not extending the core libraries to take advantage of that feature1. V1 of the Lambda Strawman proposed C#-style static extension methods as a means of creating the illusion of adding methods to existing classes and interfaces, but they have significant limitations – for example, they cannot be overridden by classes that implement the interface being extended, so implementations are stuck with the “one size fits all” implementation provided as an extension2, and they are not reflectively discoverable. 2. Virtual extension methods3 In this document, we outline a mechanism for adding new methods to existing interfaces, which we call virtual extension methods. Existing interfaces can be augmented without compromising backward compatibility4 by adding extension methods to the interface, whose declaration would contain instructions for finding the default implementation in the event that implementers do not provide a method body.
