Comic Book Journalists Beyond Clark Kent It’S a Different Era of Anti-Heroes and Realism, but the Reporter Is Still an Effective Device, Comics Insiders Say
138 Matty Roth runs into trouble in Brian Wood’s title DMZ #17 (May 2007). Comic Book Journalists Beyond Clark Kent It’s a different era of anti-heroes and realism, but the reporter is still an effective device, comics insiders say. Bill Knight Professor of Journalism Department of English and Journalism Western Illinois University [email protected] The public respects journalists and holds “the press” in low esteem, according to several surveys – much like Congress’ approval ratings that are low collectively while individual incumbents usually are re-elected. Americans seem dissatisfied with institutions but appreciative of people they know who happen to make up those institutions. A We Media/Zogby Interactive poll released on February 29, 2008, showed that 70% of Americans believe journalism to be important to their communities, but 64% are dissatisfied with its quality. In popular culture, journalists are often featured in novels, films, and other forms of entertainment, but one of pop culture’s most enduring uses of the journalist is in comic books. 139 However, comics’ often shallow journalist characters – embodied by the milquetoast version of Clark Kent – recently have evolved into more full-bodied roles: weak or vain, blustery or cynical, realistic or at least somewhat more credible for twenty-first century audiences. In the last few years, running characters or situations that expand the role of journalists in comic books range from DMZ’s Matty Roth and Transmetropolitan’s Spider Jerusalem to Phantom Jack’s Jack Baxter, Deadline’s Kat Farrell, and Front Line’s Ben Urich and Sally Floyd. This year is the seventy-first anniversary of the publication of Action Comics No. -

JUMP WISH-LIST Rules/Notes: Settings
JUMP WISH-LIST Rules/Notes: ● This list is solely for settings that don’t have jumps made yet. ● No jumps you want to see redone, I’m not going to go down this path. If there is any such setting mentioned on list, then as soon as it is pointed out to me, I’ll remove it. ● Settings already claimed will be either removed from list or have claim noted. I’ll accept info about claims only from the jump-maker who claimed it. ● I hope to maintain this list in such way that /tg/, SB and QQ communities can all check it out. If you don’t like something on it, just ignore it. After all, if jump is being made doesn’t mean you have to use it. Furthermore, we all have different tastes, be mindful of that. ● Fanfics will be listed separately. Some people like the idea of such jumps, some don’t. I might end up removing this section altogether just because it is so difficult to decide if certain fanfic would be acceptable for being turned into jump or not. ● Settings will be listed alphabetically within a genre, by their official name. Any other names will be included after that one. Please include genre and medium with any suggestions (e.g. KultHorror - Tabletop RPG; The Culture - Science Fiction - Novel) ● Rule of thumb – recommend settings that you would want to visit in order to interact with characters and storylines, not in order to get specific perks/powers/items. Settings: 0-9 ● 100, The (SF - TV Series) ● 300 (movies) ● 3x3 Eyes (manga) ● 7th Heaven (TV series) ● 9 (movie) ● 100 Bullets (vertigo) ● 11eyes (VN/anime) ● 2 Broke Girls (TV Series) -

ABSTRACT FATAL ATTRACTIONS: AMERICAN COMIC BOOKS AND THE AIDS CRISIS June 2015 Sean A. Guynes, B.A., Western Washington University M.A., University of Massachusetts Boston Advisor: Aaron Lecklider, Ph.D. Second Reader: Rachel Rubin, Ph.D. Between 1988 and 1994 American comic books engaged the politics, problematics, and crises of the AIDS epidemic by inserting the virus and its social, cultural, and epidemiological effects on gay men into the four-color fantasies of the superhero genre. As the comic-book industry was undergoing major internal changes that allowed for more mature, adult storylines, creators challenged the Comics Code Authority’s 1954 sanction against the representation of homosexuality to create, for the first time, openly gay characters. Creators’ efforts were driven by a desire to recognize the reality of gay men’s lived experiences, especially crucial in the epidemic time of the AIDS crisis. -
Postmodern Themes in American Comics Circa 2001-2018

THE ALUMINUM AGE: POSTMODERN THEMES IN AMERICAN COMICS CIRCA 1985- 2018 by AMY COLLERTON Under the Direction of John McMillian, PhD ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to update the fan-made system of organization for comic book history. Because academia ignored comics for much of their history, fans of the medium were forced to design their own system of historical organization. Over time, this system of ages was adopted not only by the larger industry, but also by scholars. However, the system has not been modified to make room for comics published in the 21st century. Through the analysis of a selection modern comics, including Marvel’s Civil War and DC Comics’ Infinite Crisis, this thesis suggests a continuation of the age system, the Aluminum Age (2001-the present). Comics published during the Aluminum Age incorporate Postmodern themes and are unique to the historical context in which they were published.
