Dated 16 September 2015 MIKE BAIRD, MP Premier 2935 NSW Government Gazette No 79 of 18 September 2015 Government Notices Planning and Environment Notices NATIONAL PARKS AND WILDLIFE ACT 1974 Declaration of an Aboriginal Place Pursuant to Section 84 Euroka Clearing ‘Nye Gnorang’ Aboriginal Place Blue Mountains National Park, Glenbrook Pursuant to section 84 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974, I, the Minister for the Environment, being of the opinion that the place known as Euroka Clearing ‘Nye Gnorang’ is, and was, of special significance to Aboriginal culture, declare the lands described in Schedule “A” as an Aboriginal Place. Euroka Clearing ‘Nye Gnorang’, within the Blue Mountains National Park, has always been significant to the Darug people because of their continued connection to the area. They have visited the area in the National Park for many years for cultural ceremonies and to pass on their cultural knowledge to their younger generations. They have collected ochre, rejuvenated their sites, held their smoking ceremonies for mourning and healing, and naming ceremonies for children and adults. In Euroka Clearing, on Appletree Flat, the Darug community and family members have for many years carved burial trees that represent their connection to their past. Carved trees have complex patterns cut into the tree, where a piece of bark is removed and the underlying wood is carved. When a carved tree is found next to a grave, it is usually a sign of family ties or the totem of the deceased person. There are numerous hearths across the area, and there are also numerous mudstone and silcrete artefacts visible on the surface, which show occupation by the Darug people for thousands of years. Euroka Clearing ‘Nye Gnorang’ is also culturally connected to nearby Red Hands Cave, which local Darug people visit regularly. Euroka Clearing ‘Nye Gnorang’ is a special place where the Darug people come to connect back to their people and their land, and it provides them the ability to protect and manage their cultural heritage, including their traditional practices.
