BAT SURVEY BARN AND OUTBUILDING OFF STATION ROAD, POTTERHANWORTH, LINCOLNSHIRE

1 INTRODUCTION

Helen Scarborough has been commissioned by Mr Jon Jennings to undertake a bat survey of a barn and outbuilding off Station Road, Potterhanworth, Lincolnshire. The survey is required in connection with plans to develop the buildings for residential use.

The site was surveyed and assessed on the 22nd February 22nd May, 20th June, 26th June and 27th June 2019 by Helen Scarborough (WML-CL19 and WML-CL20 to survey bats; registration numbers 2015-12691-CLS-CLS and 2015-12692-CLS-CLS respectively), Jenny Boatwright and Sarah Vinters.

This report details the methods used, describes the species found on the site, discusses the results and makes recommendations for further work.

2 METHODS

2.1 Bats 2.1.1 Data search The Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre (LERC) was consulted and commissioned to search for records of bats and bat roosts within 2km of the survey site. Records which area more than 20 years old are not referred to in this report but are included within the relevant appendix.

2.1.2 Preliminary roost assessment In accordance with Bat Surveys for Professional Ecologists: Good Practice Guidelines 3rd Edition, a preliminary roost assessment was carried out on the barn and outbuilding to determine whether any features were present that bats could use for entry/exit points and roosting, and to search for signs of bat presence. Daylight assessments and surveys were undertaken on the 22nd February and 27th June 2019. High powered torches and ladders were used to search for internal and external features including but not limited to:

• Gaps around windowsills, door frames and lintels

5

Station Road, Potterhanworth July 2019

• Lifted rendering, paintwork, shiplap boarding • Soffit boxes, weatherboarding and fascias • Lead flashing, hanging tiles and lifted or missing tiles/slate • Gaps >15mm in brickwork and stonework • Bat specimens (live or dead) • Bat droppings and urine staining • Feeding remains (e.g. moth wings) • Cobweb-free sections of ridge beam

The site was then assigned a measure of potential suitability to determine the extent of future survey work needed. The categories of potential suitability and further survey effort required are as follows:

• Negligible – Negligible features on site likely to be used by roosting bats – no further survey work • Low – A structure with one or more potential roost sites that could be used by individual bats opportunistically – one survey visit (dusk or dawn) • Moderate – A structure with one or more potential roost sites that could be used by bats on a regular basis – two separate survey visits (one dusk and one dawn) • High – A structure with one or more potential roost sites that are obviously suitable for use by larger numbers of bats on a regular basis and for longer periods of time – three separate survey visits (one dusk, one dawn and one dusk or dawn)

2.1.3 Evening emergence surveys A team of 2 surveyors undertook the surveys on the 21st May and the 20th June 2019. The surveys started 15 minutes before sunset and continued for 1.5 hours after sunset. The surveys were carried out under suitable weather conditions; on the 21st May 2/8 cloud cover, no breeze, and temperatures between 15.7 – 13ºC were recorded, and on the 20th June 5/8 cloud cover, a light breeze and temperatures between 14.4 – 12.5ºC were recorded. It was dry on both occasions.

One surveyor was located at the north east of the buildings, and the other surveyor at the north west of the buildings, such that all sides could be assessed for emergence with particular attention given to potential roost sites and exit/ entry points. Pettersson D-240x ultrasonic time expansion bat detector and an Anabat Walkabout full spectrum detector were used to assist the surveys, and to enable acoustic species identification.

6

Station Road, Potterhanworth July 2019

2.1.4 Dawn re-entry survey A team of 2 surveyors undertook the survey on the 26th June 2019; the survey started 1.5 hours before sunrise, and continued for 15 minutes after sunrise. The survey was carried out under suitable weather conditions with 4/8 cloud cover, a light breeze and temperatures between 14.7 and 13ºC. The surveyors were positioned such that all sides of the buildings could be assessed for re-entry with particular attention given to potential roost sites and exit/ entry points. An Anabat Walkabout full spectrum bat detector and a Pettersson D-240x ultrasonic time expansion bat detector were used to assist the survey, and to enable acoustic species identification.

2.2 Survey constraints and limitations The information contained in this report was accurate at the time of the survey; however, it should be noted that the status of mobile species such bats can alter in a short period of time and any survey only represents a ‘snapshot’ of the site at one point in the season. There are no definitive guidelines relating to the longevity of an ecology report, however we recommend that the results are updated after 12 months if the development or proposed work has not commenced.

Despite being assessed as having low potential, the buildings were surveyed three times (two dusk and a dawn) as it is recognised that parts of the site (small loft void in the stone barn and small void above one of the sections of the outbuilding) are inaccessible.

3 SITE ASSESSMENT

3.1 Location and grid reference The survey site comprises a stone barn and attached, redbrick outbuildings located off Station Road, Potterhanworth in Lincolnshire - central grid reference TF 053662.

The survey buildings and the area surrounding them are described in detail below and representative photographs are included in the text.

3.2 The survey buildings The stone barn and outbuildings are situated at the southern end of the western boundary of the farmyard and comprise two different sections of building. To the south there is a single- storey building comprising brick walls supporting a timber pitched roof covered with pantiles. All rooms are accessed via doors in the eastern elevation. There are glazed windows in both the

eastern and western elevations. This building is divided into 5 rooms; a restroom/washroom, two storage rooms, a garage and a log store.

The barn is attached to the northern elevation of the outbuildings, it comprises stone walls supporting a timber hipped roof covered with pantiles. The barn has a small roof void formed by plywood from purlin to ridge board.

3.3 Surrounding area In the immediate surrounding area there is grazed pasture with boundary hedgerows and trees to the west, a farmyard with modern buildings, redbrick offices, farmhouses and hard standing to the east and south. To the north is an access road off Station road with amenity grassland and mature and semi-mature trees.

4 RESULTS

4.1 Bats 4.1.1 Data search There are records of barbastelle Barbastella barbastellus (2014), Myotis species (2014), noctule Nyctalus noctula (2014), Leislers bat Nyctalus leisleri (2011), common pipistrelle Pipistrellus pipistrellus (2014), soprano pipistrelle Pipistrellus pygmaeus (2018) and brown long-eared Plecotus auritus (2015) bat species within 2km of the site. The most recent record is shown in brackets. Many of the records originate from Potterhanworth Wood, Neville Wood and Nocton Wood. There are also records from the villages of Potterhanworth Booths, Potterhanworth and Nocton.

4.1.2 Preliminary roost assessment The results of the building assessment appear in tabular form below:

11

Station Road, Potterhanworth July 2019

Table 1: Assessment of survey site to support roosting bats Building/ Description Site value for Feature bats No soffits and fascia’s Brickwork in good order on outbuildings Very small enclosed voids (too small to support attic dwelling species on a long term basis) No hanging tiles Pointing at verges and ridges in good order Low potential for Pantiles generally tight – one large hole in roof of The barn and long term outbuilding (eastern side) outbuilding significant roosting Windows and door frames tightly fitted

Some gaps in the stonework of the main stone barn – no field signs found where accessible Very small amount of bat activity recorded during daylight assessment in 2014 No bats emerged during surveys in September 2015

No bats or field signs of bats were recorded during daylight assessments and surveys undertaken in 2019.

Four droppings recalling those voided by brown long-eared bats were recorded in the outbuilding during the 2014 survey.

4.1.3 Evening emergence surveys The results of the evening surveys are provided as Appendix 1. No bats were recorded emerging from the survey building. Common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle and noctule bats were all recorded commuting past the building.

No bats emerged during surveys undertaken in September 2015.

4.1.4 Dawn re-entry survey The results of the dawn survey are provided as Appendix 1. No bats were recorded re-entering the survey building. Common pipistrelle and noctule bats were recorded commuting past the buildings.

5 DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 Bats 5.1.1 Legal protection In , Scotland and Wales, all bats are strictly protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (and as amended); in England and Wales this legislation has been amended and strengthened by the Countryside and Rights of Way (CRoW) Act 2000. Bats are also protected by European legislation; the EC Habitats Directive is transposed into UK law by The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 – often referred to as 'The Habitat Regs'. Taken together, all this legislation makes it an offence to:

• Deliberately capture (or take), injure or kill a bat • Intentionally or recklessly disturb a group of bats where the disturbance is likely to significantly affect the ability of the animals to survive, breed, or nurture their young or likely to significantly affect the local distribution or abundance of the species whether in a roost or not. • Damage or destroy the breeding or resting place of a bat • Possess a bat (alive or dead) or any part of a bat • Intentionally or recklessly obstruct access to a bat roost • Sell (or offer for sale) or exchange bats (alive or dead) or parts of bats

A roost is defined as being ‘any structure or place that is used for shelter or protection’, and since bats regularly move roost site throughout the year, a roost retains such designation whether or not bats are present at the time.

5.1.2 Recommendations The surveys indicate that the survey buildings are not used as a long term, significant roost site by bats. Droppings have been recorded inside the building in the past (2014); however recent surveys show no further signs of occupation by bats.

No further survey work is required, and the building can be developed without the requirement for a European Protected Species (EPS) license.

The data searches indicate that bats occur in the local area; and a small number of common bat species were recorded commuting past the buildings. As a positive enhancement measure, integral bat roost units could be incorporated into the building when it is renovated; this measure (together with other measures for bats) is reflected in the Masterplan.

13

Station Road, Potterhanworth July 2019

6 SUMMARY

A barn and outbuildings in Potterhanworth, Lincolnshire was surveyed for bats in connection with proposed work to convert the buildings for residential use.

No significant signs of use by bats were noted during the surveys. No further survey work is required. No EPS licence is required.

Provision of integral bat roost units will be included in the Masterplan as an ecological enhancement.

4 Non-statutory sites

The GLNP works directly with local authorities to coordinate the Local Sites system in Greater Lincolnshire. Sites are selected by the Nature Partnership, based on recommendations made by its expert working groups known as the LWS Panel and LGS Panel. The Register of Local Sites is then submitted for inclusion within local authority planning policy.

These sites are recognition of wildlife or geological value and are a testament to the land management that is already being undertaken on them. Identifying these sites helps local authorities meet their obligations under legislation and government guidance, including reporting on the number of sites in positive management for Single Data List Indicator 160-00.

8 Habitats

Priority habitats are those identified as being the most threatened and requiring conservation action in the UK. The most-recent list of UK priority species and habitats was published in August 2007 following a 2-year review of the process and priorities, representing the most comprehensive analysis of such information ever undertaken in the UK.

The data presented is the most up-to-date of the data collated by the GLNP and mostly comes from surveys of Local Sites; further historic data and non-Priority habitat data may also be available. Absence of information doesn’t mean that the Priority habitat isn’t present merely that no information is held.

A number of different datasets have been consulted to produce this report - a summary of attribution statements is available at https://glnp.org.uk/admin/resources/habitat-attribution.pdf.
