Year: November, 2013 – February, 2014 Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh; Client: Public – Private – Partnership Authority (PPPA). Main project features: Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is the administrative and commercial centre of the country. Its importance has been reflected by the strong growth in population which currently stands at around 14 million and is expected to continue to grow rapidly, with estimates suggesting the population could double over the next 20 years. The high population density is reflected in the transport sector which consists of many different modes – both motorized and non-motorized. These various modes of transports often use the same road space resulting in high levels of traffic congestion and operational difficulties. Estimates indicate that 80% of registered vehicles in Bangladesh operate in Dhaka. These congestion challenges are exacerbated given the relatively low level of road infrastructure in Dhaka and the high growth in traffic volumes (estimated at 8 -10% per year). In order to facilitate congestion free traffic movement there is an urgent need for additional road infrastructures in Dhaka. The Joydevpur-Bhulta-Madanpur Road („the Dhaka By-pass road) is a 2 lane road and part of the strategically important National Highway N105. It is a key arterial route which connects the northern and north-eastern part of the country with the southern and eastern region by-passing Dhaka city. It is estimated that every day around 10,000 motorized vehicles use the Dhaka By-pass road and the numbers are continuing to increase. Consequently the 2 lane road cannot cater for such increased traffic but there is a need to separate out the local traffic from the trans-regional traffic and create a dedicated expressway to cater for the increase in traffic demand and to reduce journey time. The objective of the project is to provide an alternate route for road users with high level of travel time reliability and reduced vehicle operating cost in National Highway N105. The upgrading of the road will also enhance the connectivity of the road network to meet forecast economic and traffic growth targets. Positions held: Junior Highway Engineer. Activities performed: In this Assignment, consultant was involved in the preliminary design of Highway / Roadway of this project. For this, Traffic data was needed. Consultant involved in Traffic Survey for this project. For this – Location was identified, survey plan & methodology was prepared, trained up the surveyors, coordinated the survey in field, data collection was inspected. After gathering all traffic data from field, data was analyzed, tabulated, formatted for giving input in TRANS CAD, predicted the future traffic for this project. At last assisted in writing report on this survey. Name of assignment or project: “Topographical Survey” – “Technical Assistance for DTCA Capacity Building Project” (funded by AFD). Name of assignment or project: Post Graduate Thesis on – “PERFORMANCE EVALUATION PARAMETERS FOR SIGNALIZED ROAD INTERSECTIONS CV of M.M.A. Kader Chowdhury 15

UNDER HETEROGENEOUS TRAFFIC CONDITION”, under Professor Dr. Md. Shamsul Haque, BUET. Year: April, 2013 – November, 2016. Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh; Client: BUET. Main project features: A study was carried out to evaluate the performance of the intersection in terms of delay based Level of Service (LOS), Accident Records and based on that appropriate countermeasures are recommended to improve the performance Positions held: Researcher (M.Sc. Thesis). Activities performed: For fulfilling the objective of this Thesis work, Consultant did a lot of Preliminary Traffic Survey in Sixty One (61) intersections; selected finally Seven (7) intersections in Dhaka City. After the finishing of preliminary survey of those selected intersections, the final field survey was performed. Detail data collection of various characteristics of intersections were done, such as – geometric and operating condition, vehicular flow, pedestrian flow, side friction, traffic control devices, queue length, delay, accident record (reported), etc. Finishing this data collection, analysis of data was done. From this analysis, a delay based level of service (LOS) of different approaches of selected intersections was calculated as per standard stated in Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) and American Association of State Highway and Transport Officials (AASHTO). The overall LOS of those intersections was found out by following a statistical method named “Grade Point Average Method”. From this, a ranking of Dhaka Metropolitan City‟s intersections was established based on LOS. From this ranking, the worst and best performing intersections were identified. This study incorporated with the reported accident data. Accident data was obtained from Accident Research Institute (ARI) of BUET for the period of sixteen (16) years (from 1998 to 2014). Finally evaluation of parameters for signalized / un – signalized road intersections under heterogeneous traffic condition of Dhaka City, a delay based LOS and as well as ranking were established with respect to accident data
