The only archaeological feature to be seen in the course of the watching brief comprised a short section of sandstone wall, believed to date to some time in the first half of the 19th century. The wall was seen during excavations for decontamination works and was preserved in situ beneath an area of hardstanding. The monitoring of the works had shown that almost the entire site had been subject to very heavy disturbance effectively removing any archaeological deposits or burying them at a greater depth than the impact of the development. These showed that the survival of the original road surface was at best variable and dependant upon the level of truncation due to services and 20th century road resurfacing. The best survival, due in part to the lower level of the road was on the north side of North Street. Twentieth century adaptation and re-use of the in situ kerbing on this side of the road to provide a sub-surface storm drain may also have accounted for the survival of some of the original pavement surface of limestone pitchings. However, the fourth test pit indicated that this survival was likely to have been patchy. [Au(abr)]

Excavation of the site revealed evidence of a small-scale settlement, perhaps an isolated farmstead, in the vicinity of the medieval village of Humberstone, originally discovered in a 2003 evaluation. The features were badly truncated and lay beneath ridge and furrow remains. Ceramic evidence suggested a 12th or 13th century date for the settlement. Disturbance of earlier deposits during this restoration was evidence by the presence of upturned stone coffin lids and residual finds of medieval pottery and glazed floor tiles. The external monitoring located a similarly disturbed post- medieval graveyard soil that contained occasional fragments of disarticulated human bone, while the lower levels of the 14th century walls of the South Porch were also exposed by the groundwork. Finds retrieved during the internal investigations included 17th century pottery, clay pipe stems and window glazing lead as well as residual medieval pottery and glazed floor tiles. The external monitoring yielded a very mixed assemblage that included post-medieval pottery and window glass and medieval glazed floor tiles. [Au(abr)]

Radiocarbon dating indicated that residual charcoal of early Bronze Age date had been deposited in a pit of a later pit alignment. A single isolated small pit containing burnt debris has also

Archaeological Investigations Project 2006 Post-determination and Research East Midlands been radiocarbon dated to the early Bronze Age. A late Bronze Age/early Iron Age date would be expected for the pit alignment, but no dating evidence was recovered. The alignment appeared to comprise regular rectangular pits cut into both ironstone and clay, but the pits cut into the clay had eroded to sub-circular surface plans. A linear boundary ditch was also undated, but may have been related to an area of open settlement that comprised a scatter of small pits and post holes, including remnants of possible roundhouses and four-post structures. The small pottery assemblage contained little diagnostic material, but an early-middle Iron Age date was likely, perhaps the 5th-4th centuries BC. Furrows from a medieval ridge and furrow field system were also recorded. [Au(adp)]

Interim Report on Pre-Construction Excavation Kinsley, G Nottingham : Trent and Peak Archaeological Unit, 2006, 5pp, figs, tabs Work undertaken by: NUCL Previous documentary work at the site showed that it had contained the medieval Town Hall and other buildings. The earliest phase located probably belonged to the early post-Conquest period, with open drains, rock-cut pits and possible timber structures recorded. The Garners Hill footway was consolidated by the deliberate dumping of deposits. The second phase involved widespread dumping and the construction of stone walled buildings in the southern end of the area. The third phase involved the construction of a large mortared stone wall corresponding with the boundary of the Town Hall. Other 18th and 19th century brick walls were encountered across the site. Two caves and a possible third truncated cave were found at the frontage and a passage to the south end of the site. There were grounds to suspect that the cave may have dated to the pre-18th century, although the infilling was probably 18th-19th century. [Au(adp)]

Archaeological Investigations Project 2006 Post-determination and Research East Midlands

The excavation revealed a narrow swathe of Iron Age occupation encompassing both open and partially enclosed settlement components. Although a Neolithic and Bronze Age presence was indicated by residual flint work. During the Iron Age a small settlement comprising two single-phase roundhouses were framed by a loosely bounded enclosure to the west and a long segmented boundary ditch to the east. Together these ditches bisected the development area, creating a narrow corridor of settlement features. A small group of early Iron Age pottery, a rubbing stone and a burnt bone comb were recovered. During the middle Iron Age, settlement developed along the foot-print of the earlier boundaries. The western enclosure was re-cut and periodically re-worked, whilst a small new trapezoidal enclosure was constructed on the western end of the former segmented ditch line. This enclosure was re-worked on at least one occasion. The area around produced pits yielding a variety of objects including dumps of Scored Second ware pottery, a complete rotary quern, a minimum of 11 triangular loom weights, and several complete iron objects.
