Thanks are due in particular to Fran Woodrow of the John Gray Centre not only for providing the editor with electronic copies of the original letters and generously supplying transcriptions she had previously made of some of them, but also for writing the introduction. IV Editing he letters have been presented in a standardised format. Headers provide Tthe name of the sender and of the recipient, and a number by which each letter can be identified. The salutations and valedictions have been reproduced as they appear in the originals, but the dates when the letters were sent have been standardised and placed immediately after the headers. Due to the time it took for letters from England to reach Scotland, Lord James Ramsay had already sent Lady Susan Hay three before she joined the correspondence. This time lapse, and the fact that thereafter they started writing to each other on a more or less daily basis, makes it impossible to arrange the letters sensibly in order of reply. They have instead been arranged chronologically, with the number of the reply (where it can be identified) added to the notes appended to each letter. -

Notes: Four members of the family in ODNB. BACON [Frank] Bacon Origins: The first Bacon of note was son of a sheepreeve, although ancestors were recorded as early as 1286. He was a lawyer, MP 1542, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal 1558. Estates were purchased at the Dissolution. His brother was a London merchant. Eldest son created the first baronet 1611. Younger son Lord Chancellor 1618, created a viscount 1621. Eight further MPs in the 16th and 17th centuries, including kts of the shire for Norfolk and Suffolk. -

PRESS RELEASE | LONDON FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, 30 May 2014 VAN DYCK HEAD STUDY RECENTLY REDISCOVERED ON THE ANTIQUES ROADSHOW TO BE SOLD AT CHRISTIE’S LONDON ON 8 JULY, 2014 London – Christie’s is pleased to announce that a striking head study by Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), which was recently re-discovered on the BBC television progamme The Antiques Roadshow, will be offered at Christie’s Old Master & British Paintings Evening Sale, on Tuesday 8 July (estimate: £300,000-500,000, illustrated above). This work is a preparatory sketch for van Dyck’s full-length group portrait of The Magistrates of Brussels, which was painted in Brussels in 1634-35, when the artist was at the height of his powers. The painting was bought 12 years ago by Father Jamie MacLeod from an antiques shop in Cheshire for just £400. The proceeds of the sale will go towards the acquisition of new church bells for Whaley Hall Ecumenical Retreat House in Derbyshire to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War. This work will be exhibited for the first time ahead of the sale when it goes on free public view at Christie’s New York on 31 May to 3 June; it will also be on view in London ahead of the sale, on 5 to 8 July. The sketch was largely obscured by later over-paint and, as a result, had been overlooked by van Dyck scholars. Recent cleaning and restoration of the picture has revealed a swiftly executed head study entirely consistent with three other known sketches for the Magistrates of Brussels picture, a work that hung in the Brussels Town Hall until it was destroyed during the French bombardment of the city in 1695. -

Masterpieces of European Painting from Dulwich Picture Gallery
SPRING EXHIBITION FEATURES ICONIC MASTERPIECES FROM LONDON’S DULWICH PICTURE GALLERY REMBRANDT, GAINSBOROUGH, CANALETTO, POUSSIN, WATTEAU & OTHERS March 9 through May 30, 2010 This spring, the Frick presents a special exhibition of loans from Dulwich Picture Gallery, one of the major collections of Old Master paintings in the world. Heralding the London museum’s bicentenary in 2011, the exhibition will introduce American audiences to this institution’s holdings and history through nine of its most important and best-loved works. Indeed, Masterpieces of European Painting from Dulwich Picture Gallery, to be shown exclusively at the Frick from March 9 through May 30, 2010, includes signature works that seldom travel, many of which have not been on view in the United States in recent years, and, in some cases, never in New York City. THE ARMORIAL PLAQUES IN THE ROYAL SALOP INFIRMARY Janet Verasanso In the eighteenth century Shrewsbury, like most English towns, was crowded and unhealthy. 'Contagious', 'sweating' and 'putrid' fevers were rampant; death was ubiquitous, not only among the old and young but also among those in the prime of life.1 By the 1730s a number of socially conscious country gentlemen realised that the conditions in which the poor lived required an urgent solution. -

There are some caveats; Ferneley’s writing was always difficult to read, the accounts do not start until 1808, are incomplete for his Irish visits 1809-1812 and pages are missing for entries in the years 1820-1826. There are also a significant number of works undoubtedly by John Ferneley senior that are not listed (about 15-20%) these include paintings that were not commissioned or sold, those painted for friends and family and copies. A further problem arises with unlisted paintings which are not signed in full ie J. Ferneley/Melton Mowbray/xxxx or J. Ferneley/pinxt/xxxx but only with initials, J. Ferneley/xxxx, or not at all. These paintings may be by John Ferneley junior or Claude Loraine Ferneley whose work when at its best is difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish from that of their father or may be by either son with the help of their father.
